2. Making a good impression with the prospective employer is key to landing
the job but sometimes it’s the basic things like being late or not being
dressed appropriately that leave a bad impression and lets you down.

3. Here are a few interview do’s and don’ts to help you leave a great
impression and improve your chances of landing that job.

4. DO:

5. Arrive at least 10-15 minutes prior to your interview. This shows basic self
discipline and is something all employers expect from their employees.

6. Turn off your mobile phone.

7. Wear a suit regardless of the type of role and company. Looking smart gives
the impression of success.

8. Take a few copies of your fully up to date CV and if applicable a portfolio
of your work.

9. Greet everyone you meet with courtesy and respect.

10. Remember, the people you meet are your potential colleagues, as
is the interviewer, so it is important to leave a good impression.

11. Speak clearly and confidently. Employers like candidates with good
communication skills. Show enthusiasm for the position and company.

12. The right amount of enthusiasm and confidence goes a long way in an
interview; however, too much confidence can sometimes be confused
with arrogance.

13. Maintain good eye contact, listen clearly to the question being asked and
make sure your answer is relevant. If you don’t know or are not sure of
the answer be honest and turn this around by asking the interviewer
what the correct answer is. This will show that you are interested in
learning and improving your skills and experience.

14. Highlight examples of skills you have gained from previous experiences
in relation to the skills required for this job. This is something you should
prepare in advance and take to the interview.

15. Prepare some questions to ask at the end of the interview. Use this
as an opportunity to find out more about the role and the company.

16. Sell yourself. This is the opportunity to show why you are the best person
for the job. Be positive and show some personality.

17. Always tell the truth. The employer can dismiss you at any point in the future
if they find out you were dishonest in the interview. This could also affect
whether or not the employer will provide you with a job reference.

19. Don’t wear too much perfume or aftershave in case the person interviewing
you has a fragrance allergy. Giving the interviewer a migraine won’t help
your job application.

20. Don’t smoke beforehand so that you smell of smoke in the interview.

21. Don’t slouch in your chair or fidget. This shows a lack of interest.

22. Don’t swear or use slang words. It is unprofessional especially if
you are interviewing for a position that deals with clients.

23. Don’t talk too fast or waffle. This tends to happen when people are nervous.
If this happens to you, take a few deep breaths, compose yourself and
remember you’re just having a conversation.

24. Don’t discuss controversial topics such as religion or politics.

25. Don’t be negative as negativity rarely breeds success.
