Anwar al-Awlaki, a Yemeni-American imam, was the first U.S. citizen added to the CIA's list for targeted killing. He was killed by CIA missiles in Yemen in September 2011. While the U.S. said Awlaki was a leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and directed attacks against Americans, his death without trial raised legal issues since he was a U.S. citizen.
