Addition and Subtraction in 
Grade 1/2
Kids are amazing mathematicians
As a parent I would want 
to know… 
• What is my child doing in maths? 
• What can I do to help at home?
Where do teachers start? 
• Teach the Children, not the curriculum 
• Find out what the children know and 
move them on 
• Maths is not linear, we draw on all kinds 
of connections 
• We present the same ideas in different 
ways using different materials
