Description:
Removal of structurally damaged pedestrian bridge and replacement with a new bridge matching the
existing abutments and anchor bolt pattern. This bridge replacement project was paired with
another nearby bridge replacement by matching the size and specifications of each replacement
bridge for a cost effective bid response from various competing bridge fabricators.
Project Overview:
Newington Rd. closure and detour in coordination with FCPS busing schedule and notification to
police and fire and rescue services.
Notification to motorists with advance warning message boards.
De-energizing electrical power to 180 residences and 1 business with advance notice.
Lifting of existing four ton pedestrian bridge over power and communications lines to awaiting
trailer and lifting new bridge into place.
Road closure, local power outage, and lifting operations were completed in approximately 1-1/2
hours.

Both the top cord and lower chord of the structural truss was
damaged when a large tree fell on the bridge, which compromised
the long term integrity of the bridge.
