Factors affecting lls usage

  2. 2. THE FACTORS 1.Language Proficiency 2.Motivation 3.Learning Style 4.Gender 5.Cultural Beliefs
  3. 3. LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY Cognitive and metacognitive strategies show high correlations with high language proficiency levels (Ku, 1995; Peacock and Ho, 2003). Low-proficiency students used more communication strategies than high-proficiency students (Chen,1990)
  4. 4. MOTIVATION McIntyre & Noels (1996) stated that those who were substantially motivated tended to adopt more learning strategies as compared to those who have low levels of motivation Chang & Huang (1999) stated that most learning strategies were associated with motivational levels.
  5. 5. LEARNING STYLES The type of language learning strategy that learners use influences individual’s learning style preferences. (Ehrman and Oxford, 1990; Rossi-Le,1995) Extroverts show a strong preference for social strategies, while introverts use metacognitive strategies more frequently (Ehrman and Oxford, 1990)
  6. 6. GENDER Females used language learning strategies more frequently than males (Politzer, 1983; Hashim and Salih, 1994; Sy,1994; Wharton, 2000) Females, more than males, tend to be auditory, authority-oriented, need significantly to be more quiet while learning, and are more conforming than males (Marcus, 1999; Pizzo, 2000)
  7. 7. CULTURAL BELIEFS Bedell (1993) found that different cultural groups use particular kinds of strategies at different levels of frequency. Asian students tend to prefer rote memorisation and rule-oriented strategies (Politzer & McGroarty, 1985)
  8. 8. THANK YOU
