Voices Against Corruption

The Local Economic Development Agencies (LEDAs) are legal, no profit structures, owned by the public and private entities of the territory. Through the LEDA the local actors plan and activate, in a shared way, initiatives for territorial economic development, identify the most convenient instruments for their realization and enhance a coherent system for their technical and financial support. The LEDAs provide several services to the population and institutions, such as territorial promotion, economic dynamization, credit, technical assistance to businesses, entrepreneurial training, with the objectives of supporting productive competitive development and economic innovation, within the perspective of an equitable, ecologic, and human development. 50 LEDAs with such characteristics are currently operating in many Latin American, African, East European countries, and they are gathered into the ILS LEDA network. These LEDAs are based on the experiences of the numerous similar structures operating in Europe since the ‘60s, nevertheless significant innovations have been introduced with regard to service supply methods, sustainability mechanisms, comprehensive management of economic promotion and the fight against poverty. These LEDAs, in fact, integrate governance components (public-private partnership, local-national relations); strategic components (coordination between planning and action); human development components (social inclusion, vulnerable group support instruments, relations between the center and the suburbs of the territory, environmental protection); territorial promotion components (project financing and international marketing); business service supply components (technical assistance, professional training, marketing and loans).

FSD envisions a world where all people have the opportunity and capacity to direct economic, social, and environmental resources toward sustainable outcomes that improve lives and communities. Our mission is to achieve community-driven goals through asset-based development and international exchange in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. FSD has been described as the “gold standard for global engagement programs.” We offer student internships, volunteer global service trips, and group programs, providing intensive pre-departure and in-country support. Programs include rigorous development theory and practical training, continuing educational and cultural activities, personal and group reflection sessions, and accommodation and transportation support. Our dedicated teams at each site are available 24/7 to guide you with cross-cultural, development and safety & security support. Our program sites are in six countries and 10 cities, where for almost two decades we have supported more than 300 community partner organizations and trained more than 3,000 volunteers. Our community development efforts have maintained an ongoing project sustainability rate of nearly 80 percent, addressing health, social, environmental, and economic issues by responding to community priorities and offering training, grants, and volunteer support to our community partners. Annually we support more than 200 projects and invest more than $800,000 in our partner communities, and our work directly impacts the lives of (on average) 150,000 people around the world. From a women’s beekeeping business in Kenya to nutritional education for mothers in Nicaragua and cook stove projects in India, FSD listens to community priorities and supports local leaders to achieve their vision for a better future. The webinar was a culmination of a month long online discussion organized by the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS), CGIAR Research Program on Livestock, the Climate Smart Agriculture Youth Network (CSAYN), AgriProFocus, and ICCO Cooperation. As a wrap-up to the online discussion, this webinar discussed novel opportunities for youth, practitioners, policymakers, scientists, technical experts and other stakeholders emerging in the discussion and provided an impetus towards developing a framework for concrete youth engagement in agribusiness within the context of a changing climate.

Syngulon’s technology expands the capacity for selection of microorganisms. The ability to select individual microbes with a behavior of interest is essential, whether for simple cloning at the bench, or for industry-scale production. Synthetic biology uses the concept of “bioengineering” to improve or modify existing genetic systems to create microbes with desired behaviors, and Syngulon uses this approach to develop its selection technologies. This selection technology is based on bacteriocins, ribosomally-produced peptides naturally made by most bacteria to kill competitive microbial species. These bacteriocins can have a limited or wide target range against other microbial species. This technology offers advantageous over antibiotic selection for several reasons: it avoids the use of antibiotics in the first place, helping to reduce the spread of antibiotic resistant microbes. The technology also increases product yield; as bacteriocins are generally smaller peptides, they do not impose a heavy metabolic burden on the producing cell. They can have a wide target specificity, helping to avoid genetic drift. Finally, our system is 100% plasmid-based (e.g. without chromosomal mutations), making it applicable for use in any E. coli strains.
