2. OBJECTIVES OF THE PLATFORM
• To raise awareness on the new scope of practice of AHTs and the broader
impact within the animal health sector.
• To identify opportunities (both public and private sector mechanisms) to
support AHTs in setting up sustainable businesses and improving smallholder
farmer access to primary animal health care.
• To develop a plan to support sustainable business development for AHTs.
• To create an inclusive platform through which experiences and best models will
be shared amongst members.
• To facilitate collaboration among role players and act as an incubator for
individual Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

8. Roles & Responsibilities
• Identify key challenges and opportunities for AHT business
development.
• Ensure that relevant policies and laws are adhered and shared with the
relevant stakeholders for further enhancement in collaboration with the
SAVC.
• Lobby resources and the establishment of partnerships to support the
business development solutions for the AHTs.
• Identify and provide solutions for the challenges encountered by AHTs in
their business environment and primary health care.
• Identify opportunities for the AHTs to grow their business in the animal
health sector and value chains i.e., feedlots, abattoirs, auctions,
vaccination suppliers and animal health medications.
• Exchange knowledge and evidence to support business cases for

9. Frequency of meetings
• The MSP meetings shall be convened on a bi-annual basis.
• Meetings will alternate between face-to-face and virtual.
• The adhoc meetings shall only be convened when the need arises.
• Where members cannot attend, they will ensure that another
representative attends on their behalf.
• Quorum shall constitute not less than 50% members, with representation
from the identified sectors (public sector, private sector, academia,
professional groups/associations and the NGO’s or donors).
• Individual working groups may be established upon need to monitor and
follow up on subtopics raised during the first meeting.

11. Accountability & Sustainability
• DALRRD in collaboration with the South African Veterinary Council will assume
the overall accountability of the responsible governance of the MSP.
• The EuFMD/FAO team in South Africa will act as the secretariat of the MSP and
hand over to the new elected secretariat after a year of its formation.
• The budget for facilitating MSP engagements (travel, workshop logistics and
lodging) will be provided by the project.
• The MSP will work on the financing strategy to leverage the available resources
for future engagements.

12. Objectives of today‘s meeting
• Establish a platform that brings together organizations, institutions and
associations to support the development of a sustainable business
environment for the Animal Heath Technicians (AHTs) in the delivery of
animal health services in the country.
• Develop an action plan to support AHTs to develop sustainable primary
animal healthcare businesses.
• Explore opportunities for partnerships both private, and public/private.
• Share experiences and expertise to promote a more collaborative
approach between Veterinarians and Animal Health Technicians
according to the local context, and within the regulatory framework.
