TERM PAPER
How is digital learning
going to change
school and education?
 The digital determines profound changes that cannot be reduced to the technical aspect.
According to MILAD DOULIHI, they should speak in this sense of “digital culture”.
This expression has a growing success and is used to focus on the transformation
of world views produced by the spread of digital technologies.
Digital learning can describe a variety of learning environments,
including a student taking a class remotely
or a student working through exercises on a computer
with assistance from the classroom teacher.
Because of the huge role computers and technology play in the lives of people, it is vital
to include computers and technology in student education. Preparing students to enter
the world of technology after high school is not an option.
In her article "Learning in the Digital Age," published in January 2006, Carolyn Pool states,
"The digital revolution is as near as a cell phone and as far away as the spacecraft Voyager.
In a technological expanding society, digital content is becoming readily accessible and
prevalent in our daily lives. A big part of the daily life of a student lies in a classroom, and
there are advantages to incorporating technology into the curriculum. Because
technology comes in different forms and can be personalized to meet the needs of any
lesson plan, digital technology is a good learning tool for students as well as educator.
WHY DIGITAL LEARNING?
• Technology has a transformative power. Many sectors, such as medicine,
manufacturing, entertainment, travel, finance and retail have been
changed fundamentally by the effective and innovative use of technology.
• Online learning and virtual schooling is beginning to play an important role
alongside traditional approaches. These approaches can support flexibility
and choice in the curriculum and extend learning beyond the school
environment.
• Lesson videos and clips online, which enable teachers to learn more about
the successful techniques and approaches of others, and offer pupils access
to excellent teaching beyond the classroom.
ADVANTAGES OF D.L.
• Computer presentation technology allows the teacher to move through
material quicker. Instead of writing notes on a whiteboard as he teaches,
the teacher creates a PowerPoint.
• Students who use computers in the classroom learn technical skills that
they will use in the workplace. Some of these might include typing,
searching the Internet and creating a presentation of their own.
• As the student's learn new computer skills, the teacher may assign more
complex assignments. For example, the teacher may require the students
to create a PowerPoint presentation with links to and research from the
Internet, as opposed to an oral report with research from the school
library.
• The technology available today has made a wealth of knowledge available to
students, which offers great potential for the speed and style of learning.
• Education is no longer the elitist privilege it once was. The information on the
Internet is there for all who have access, without discrimination.
• Content and information found on the Internet is rapidly expanding, and resources
available to students are readily accessible.
• For students who have a hard time visualizing texts in a textbook or in lecture
notes, online video content or programs allows the student to learn visually.
DISADVANTAGES OF D.L.
• Some teachers see this as a potential disadvantage, however, because it
decreases the time students have to interact with a teacher. Instead of
engaging in a discussion with the teacher as he writes on the white board,
the student becomes a passive observer of the inflexible PowerPoint.
• Again, the more time a student spends on a computer the less she learns
from the teacher. Time that students spend applying what they learn on
the computer must be balanced with the time they spend learning new
concepts.
• As computers become more prevalent in the classroom, teachers become
more dependent upon their use. This creates a problem when the
computer fails.
• With this increased access to knowledge also comes a probable loss of communication skills and
interactive abilities between students and teacher, and students to peers.
• While general access is not denied, some children may not be exposed to computers and other
technology because of socio-economic status; A student may get to use a computer for a short
time, or only as a once-a-week activity instead of a regular class period. This puts these children
at a disadvantage in learning technological functions.
• One problem is students' vulnerability to the distractions that computers provide. It can be
incredibly difficult for teachers to monitor all the students, and some may play games or surfing
the web instead of focusing on the work at hand
 One concern with computers is that they can reduce learning demands on students. With access to
the web comes millions of pieces of information, many of which contain answers to common
problems from school. Students can use computers to do less work or even to cheat.
SO HOW IS DIGITAL
LEARNING
GOING TO CHANGE
SCHOOL AND EDUCATION?
• A New Pedagogical Approach
Digital technology is an excellent way to transmit educational content.
It allows students to use interactive learning material on their tabs or other devices.
Digital learning has set pace for a pedagogical approach which is beneficial for both
students and teachers. With the help of digital content and multimedia devices
classroom teaching has become quite interactive. The use of PowerPoint Slides,
DVD, rich content had made learning several times more interesting and fun. It has
also facilitated greater participation of students and teachers
• Generates Interest in learning
Most often than not, children are not quite excited at the idea of learning or studying. However,
with the onset of digital learning these feelings can be left behind. Digital learning is quite
interactive. The use of multimedia devices, power point presentation, videos can add a fun edge
to a history or science lessons.
Instead of looking at just texts books, children can get a visual feel to everything. They no longer
need to rely upon the visualization of things in their minds; instead they can perceive things just
by looking at it.
• Sustainable and Beneficial
In the last few years, IT infrastructure in many developing countries of the world has considerably
improved. Young people of African nations such as Kenya, Nigeria, Congo are accessing internet on
their phones and wireless devices. Due to this change, digital media learning has got a new lease of life.
The rationale behind the product is to promote quality education in a cost effective and efficient manner.
As for the teachers, the device gives them a better control of the entire curriculum. Through the device
a teacher can keep close watch at the individual progress of a child. They know exactly where the entire
class is leading, individual performance of students so on and forth.
CONCLUSION
• To wrap up our discussion on the future of digital learning, it is safe to
conclude that digital technology has laid new opportunities in the
educational sector. It has become a source of rich multimedia content
that will be followed in various section of the educational pyramid.
Right from school going children to college attendees, digital
education is the way to go. In addition to that digital learning will
spread equally across economics, culture and country. In fact in third
world nations, the use of technology in education is the real answer
to meet all obstacles that come in the way to equal access and
distribution of education.
In summary, if education is about knowledge and
intellectual skills, then information technology lies
at the heart of it all. We have only just begun this
transition. School will eventually look very different.
Get ready!!!!!!
