Both user-friendly CAD software such as SketchUp! and TinkerCAD and affordable 3D printers make it increasingly accessible to adopt 3D technologies. Through this increased accessibility, Ultimaker and other 3D printing players have started to shift from professional users to amateurs who innovate for fun. The use of open source and a continuous sharing through the platform will help to create more consumer value and helps drives widespread adoption of the technology.
The fact that you are now at this event, 3D printing for the home, shows us that something very very significant has happened. A powerful technology is becoming accessible, more and more, to people like you and me. And the access is actually really what excites me more than the technology part. Well...
I say sufficiently, because it's not about the technology. The technology was patented and took 17 years for a key patent to run out. It's not something so advanced that nobody else would have developed it. So that makes it hard to justify the patent-system.
And in January of this year, together with Martijn Elserman, Siert Wijnia and the help of many many people, we founded Ultimaking Ltd., that sells the Ultimaker. A fast, affordable, high-resolution 3D printer that can print fairly large-sized objects.
We started making our own version. You'll be able to see many of them running today...
We are talking about a 6 month doubling time, that is a 800% annual growth. Exponential growth. Started with one printer, Made it into my day-job.
Describing business opportunities for a field that is emerged only recently, is not an easy task. Not because there are so few opportunities, but because there are so many, and I don't want to constrain your thoughts. This is why I'm going to focus on the history and some of the drivers behind the transition from technological and industrial to easy-to-operate appliance for your home [market adoption] .

One piece of plastic at a time, they are creating the building blocks for a new age of design...
But for many things, there are no suppliers anymore, or they're not even interested in supplying a single part for any less than 50 euros. So what about cheap, chinese manufactured plastic toys... REPLICAS -> George Lucas!?!
Sure, I have to admit, there is some stuff inspired by Star Wars that is online... Sure, there will be a lot of imitation.
And yes, actually useful stuff breaks too. But it's not just things that are hard to get, also things that don't exist yet...
If you're a mom or dad with a 3D printer...

A result of people revealing what they are passionate about is a kind of global sharing and collaboration that has never been witnessed for the design of physical items.
