The consumer focused strategies emerged from my PhD thesis called a Consumer Focused design approach for businesses to leverage sustainable consumption. My research focused on what companies could do to influence pro-sustainable patterns of consumption and behaviours. To study this, I focused on how UCD principles could be applied in a business context to leverage sustainable consumption.I based my research on UCD because UCD principles (early focus on users, empirical measurement, and iterative design) have been seen as a valuable approach to influence consumers because it focuses on influencing people and their contexts. One of the main outcomes of my research was the consumer-focused Strategies which are part of a larger model called the Sustainable Consumption Leveraging Model
The consumer focused strategies are part of the SCL Toolkit tool to……They have been used by marketing, design, consumer research and strategy teams in four different companies. Is the first time that there are applied with students. They have been proved useful to have a user-centered approach when developing new products/services or business models.
The cards are divided into 5 communication strategy cards, four collaboration strategy cards and five innovation strategy cards.
The research showed that if a mix of communication, collaboration and innovation strategies are used, this could motivate higher levels of sustainable consumption.
