A university offering only distance learning.
Business Situation:
The students request a dashboard with summarised
information about their courses
Sakai has a Dashboard tool with summary
information for some new items, although they do
not group this information. However, there is no tool
that summarises information grouped from various
tools and sites at the same time.
The Challenge :
Create a new tool, "Synoptic", to include on the users’
Home page. This tool should display in summary
form, and grouped by site, pending items (at the
request of the client: tasks, forums and messages), as
well as other customised data.
In addition, the sites had to be grouped according to
the particular hierarchy for that customer.

3. Case Study : SYNOPTIC TOOL
Solution :
We decided to develop this new tool using the Apache Wicket framework for the graphical interface (https://wicket.apache.org),
and by obtaining the relevant information for each tool to be queried depending on the services they offered.
As a final result, the user will get a list of courses arranged hierarchically according to the specifications of the customer,
where for each site the following will be displayed:
Course start date.
Course end date.
Pending tasks.
Pending forums.
Pending private messages.
Final grade (if published).
In addition:
Site property customised for the client
The title of each site is a link that points to the site.
The icon that displays "x pending items" is a link that points to that tool for that site.
It should be stressed that sites are grouped according to the customer’s hierarchy (through custom site properties)
Benefits :
Users can see at a glance pending elements on the different sites to which they have access, as well as other supplementary
information. In addition, they can quickly access the tools concerned on the relevant sites.
