2. Advertising Industry
Photography is widely used in a huge
amount of media In the advertising
industry, one example of this could be
billboards like this one shown on the
right. The photography can aid the
advertisement a lot because the
visuals are what catch the eye of the
audience and stay in their mind. An
advert full of text is a bad idea so most
companies tend to try and fit what
their message into an image that looks
interesting to a member of the public.
This is used whether the advert is on
TV, billboard or any other media
including photography. Another
example of clever photography used in
advertising is seen all the time on
refreshment advertisements. They
make the picture look so that the
product is irresistible and refreshing as
it could possibly be this can even go as
far as to sub-consciously make the
audience crave the product.
3. Fashion Industry
Photography is widely used in the fashion
industry. This is most commonly the case because
photography is the best and easiest way of
getting the product seen by the highest number
of people. The best thing about photography in
this sense is that once a picture is produced it can
easily be placed anywhere, from the internet to
that billboard near your local supermarket.
Photography also works well in fashion because
clothes can look a lot better and a lot more
appealing in exotic scenarios such as the ones
shown on the right here. The backgrounds
compliment the pictures and really make the
clothes themselves stand out. This is important
because with things like fashion photography the
target audience will only be briefly glancing at the
photo, so the more they can take in and the more
the photo can catch their eye, the better. As we
may all have noticed clothes look more appealing
on somebody else, especially when that person
has been edited professionally for countless
hours, this is yet another advantage that at a
glance of a photo wouldn’t run through most
peoples minds.
For example Annie Leibovitz is a very famous
fashion photographer who has worked for
magazines and independently, to produce many
different fashion photos. She has photographed
many famous people and produced many
different styles of photography. Her style
throughout her career however has worked in an
extremely unique way the style she goes for is a
fantasy and just generally twisted look. This
works well for her because it really catches the
audiences eye and made her a long standing
name among photographers.
4. Music Industry
Yet again photography is used in the music
industry to promote the artists themselves.
Photography is actually used in the music
industry quite commonly especially considering
the large variety of music magazines out there on
the market. One of the most common reasons for
photography in the music industry is for album
covers.
The music photography used in this way is always
showing the artists in a specific way, for example
a rock band would have a cool looking set of
photography showing them looking tough and
playing guitars, however an indie band would
have a more relaxed approach with an urban,
perhaps black and white background and acoustic
guitars. Album covers are important to a band
because the face of the album can often be a big
selling point especially in rock bands. Another
time photography is used in music is at festivals
and gigs, this really promotes the band and gives
them an image especially when those photos get
put on T.V or in music magazines.
An example of a well established music
photographer is Rukes. Some of his photos are
shown to the right, he calls himself the #1 DJ
photographer of the world, being photographed
by him would instantly increase the reputation of
any musical artist because of the size of his fan
base and because of the reputation he has for
photographing respectable artists.
5. Sports Industry
Sport is an extremely popular subject of interest
for countless numbers of people all across the
world, and the best thing about it is that there is
really no language barrier to sport, as is with
photography. The two things go hand in hand,
and with perfection and practice some incredible
photographs can be obtained in terms of sport
photography. One brilliant reason that
photography is a good idea in sport is simply for
the history books. Sport has existed for as long as
we can recall and tales of the legends have been
passed down as well. With photography, we can
not only remember the heroes in a greater sense
but we can honour them and use the pictures to
educate, and model the sport of today of the
heroes from the past.
Speaking in terms of todays photography
however there are still many reasons and
advantages of having photography in the sport
industry. The media is full of sports news i.e. in
news papers, television, online and more. Each
one of these different media types involves
photography into its sports news. Photographs of
the action not only look impressive but help the
audience to fully understand the information
they are receiving.
One example of a sports photographer is Bob
Martin, he takes many different sport pictures,
some of which will be chosen by the media to
use, however even the ones that don’t still litter
the internet and many people will buy the photos
because of how dedicated to sport they will be,
or for example a sports club will own an
impressive photo of a famous sports star to
advertise that particular sport.
6. Photo journalism
Photo journalism is one of the most simple
concepts to understand compared to the other
photography industries and also one of the most
effective. Photo journalism is simply a picture to
accompany a story being reported in the news.
This can involve a picture of the youngest ever
athlete grinning widely, or this could even be a
poor African child starving with no food or fresh
water. No matter what the picture is photo
journalism is designed to make the story more
than just words, to put the audience in the shoes
of the reporters themselves. Each photo would
be taken in a specific way, so for example the
photo of the young athlete would make the boy
look extremely happy and the picture would be in
a proud way with the intention of inspiring those
who witness it. However the picture of the
starving child would be taken in a dark, miserable
way designed to make those who see it have
mercy on the child and understand how lucky we
are to have all that we have.
One well known photo journalist is Chris Jordan-
Bloch who has taken many different photos from
all around the world, reporting many things,
some simple stories, but filling them with
powerful emotion through the photography, his
work is commonly used in news stories for many
different news broadcasters.
7. Fine Art Photography
Finally, fine art photography is simply
photography with the intention of looking
impressive purely for the sake for art. In fine
art photography, effects like shutter speed
really come into their element, fine art
photography is all about creating photos that
show something in its best light possible with
the intention to create art and make money.
There are many different styles of fine art
photography, for example there is a surreal
style where images are manipulated or taken
at perfect angles to make simple everyday
scenes or objects look obscure and different.
There is also a very modern take on fine art
photography such as daylight cityscapes
showing a modern day world of glass and
beauty. There are also old fashioned looking
shots of either a rural or urban setting, these
shots can either show the setting in a
beautiful, quaint way or even a creepy,
disgusting and dark way. Overall there are an
almost unlimited number of styles of fine art
photography, because it really is art and art
comes with the freedom to do whatever the
artist desires.
One example of a fine art photographer is
Malcolm glover he travels to various exotic
places and takes impressive photos each with
large variety, Photography works well in this
way because it involves getting paid for a
hobby and being able to travel around and
see all those things with your own eyes.
