4. Assessment - Essay Length: Approx. 2,500 words. Choose one of the following topics: 1. Referring to the literature as well as to your own experience as a language teacher and/or learner, discuss the key principles that you feel are important for developing listening or reading skills (choose one skill only). Explain how these key principles can be applied in the classroom. 2. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of two different approaches to language teaching with a particular group of language learners and context in mind. 3. Referring to recent literature discuss how the Internet can be used as a teaching and learning tool. You will need to choose a specific area for this essay, for example, The Use of Web2 technologies in Language Teaching. Essay titles for this question need to be negotiated with the lecturer in charge.
5. Assessment - Participation Participation in class discussions It is expected that students will participate actively in class discussions. Participation will be evaluated through using the following criteria: • being prepared for discussions. i.e. reading articles before student presentations; • actively listening to others; • respecting the ideas of others; • willingness to contribute; • progress in class participation for those experiencing initial difficulties; • ability to relate new knowledge to previous knowledge; • ability to evaluate and judge material; • ability to be articulate and concise; • ability to present coherent arguments.
