1. Audience theory
The audience theory is split into two categories, which are passive and
active. The lower the income the more passive the audience is but the
higher then income the more active the audience is.
The passive audience will not try new products because they either could
lose money, that they don’t have much of anyway so they follow trends.
Where as active audiences experiment with what media they’re
watching/reading such as a new magazine that they’ve never read.
Passive- The hypodermic needle theory suggests that the products gives
the audience an ideology. The passive audience are seen as powerless and
accept the ideologies because they don’t have a say in what happens
Active- Active audiences tend to not believe all what the text is suggesting
and gain information themselves, the tend not to follow trends and try
something new.
2. Representations
The representation theory is how the media
represents certain groups, gender etc to the audience
Stereotypes-
Females are seen as an attraction for men.
Men are shown to like dark colours like blue and black
whereas girls like pink and purple.
3. Mulvey’s theory
She suggests that women are objectified and viewed
and judged through the eyes of heterosexual men, this
shows that women are passive and men are active.
This further shows that women are projected for male
attention.
4. Winship’s theory
She said that females are showing the ideal version of
themselves for the audience, for example if a female
artist is on the cover of the magazine they will choose
to wear revealing clothing that will attract men.
5. David Gaunlett’s theory
David Gauntlett said that women are in control of
there sexuality and can openly dress or appear how
they want as they are in power of there bodies, and
they can choose to present themselves how they
want, to desire or not-desire others.
6. Ideas
In my magazine I don’t want a female on the cover
who is attracting male attention I want a picture that
makes her look presentable to the world and not have
to dress in revealing clothing to get male attention.
However I am going to make the font in pink and
purple not just because it’s a stereotype of girls
favorite colours but it will tie in with my teenage target
audience.
