This document summarizes several research tools that can be used to organize and share resources with students. It discusses RSS feeds, social bookmarking tools like Delicious, citation managers like Zotero, and screen capturing tools like Jing. For each tool, it provides a brief overview of how it works and examples of how it could be used in a library setting. It encourages the reader to think about how these tools may help them in their work and to discuss their ideas with a partner.
28. So what can I do with this? (besides find neat links) (more to the point, what can my library do with this?)
29. ideas for using del.icio.us in libraries Organize bookmarks on a topic Create a list of popular books Create lists that increase discovery Create a tag cloud for your website Generate and maintain subject guides
39. Overload! Are you & your patrons overwhelmed by how to organize and cite sources? Librarians College students High school students Independent researchers Etc.!
40. It’s manageable Don’t panic! You can manage references using special (free) online citation management software.
42. Save & archive Saves copies of articles and web pages to easily archive information. In many cases Zotero saves the full details of the item - including author, title, publication details - that will be needed to cite it later. These details may easily be edited for accuracy, or filled in where necessary. You’ll have an archived copy of the page in most cases, so no fears about broken links later! (Or fewer fears, anyway...)
45. Describe Add notes and/or tags to saved items. Zotero automatically assigns tags that it identifies from item metadata, such as library catalog subject headings. Notes can be any free-form text about an item.
46. Search Many search options make it easy to locate saved items later. Zotero searches all fields of an item, including full-text, unless otherwise directed.
47. Cite! Drag and drop items into Word, blogging windows, and other applications to easily create citations in the style you specify in “Preferences.” Or: export your entire library as a bibliography with additional plug-ins for MS Word and Open Office.
48. Considerations Catalogs, databases, etc., need to be compatible with Zotero to allow it to harvest full metadata (many already are, including ProQuest!). Must be downloaded and installed as a Firefox add-on. Does not always identify the permanent URL for an item; these must be added manually in some cases. No sharing options (yet).
52. There are more tools like this BibSonomy, based on delicious but focused on sharing research links CiteULike Connotea, science oriented Mendeley Web And many more… see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_software Choose the one you like best!
60. Jing – How does it work? Visit the Jing website Download software & create account Equipment: microphone [Demonstration?] Sara R. Seely, CTL 2009
61. Jing - Considerations Jing logo (because it’s free) Requires flash to play No post-production editing May become pay-for Perpetual beta – updates a lot 5-minute time limit

Notice that you can change the title and add tags, add a little note, and make it private if you wish. Bookmarks are public by default.

Notice that it searches both my bookmarks and everybody else’s public bookmarks, too! From there, I can explore what other users have bookmarked.
