• Please take everything off your desk except for:
• Your Vocabulary List #1.

• When completed, please read the book thief quietly.
• You may review your book for a few minutes with one of
your classmates, or alone.
• After you turn in your quiz, go to the www.ibelieve.com
• Website and pick out a story to read. Print it out, but do
not read it.
• Annotating is a useful tool for improving reading
comprehension and for remembering the assigned text.
You will be given an annotation guide, but let’s go over
the symbols first. You may also use highlighters (but
don’t overdo it!) or different colored pens, Keep it simple.
You are trying to connect with the reading in some way.
Use the tools that work best for you. Make the reading
personal. Try to find some way to connect with the
material.
• Step One: Circle unknown words. As you read, circle
each word you come across that is unfamiliar. You may
need to come back and reread the sentences before and
after the word to get at the meaning of the word.
• Step Two: Def Mark definitions. Underline, highlight or
circle sentences that provide you with a definition. It is
useful to write "def" in the margin so you can locate the
definition quickly.
• Step Three: X Mark sentences that provide examples by
marking an "X" next to the sentence.
• Step Four: ? Make notes to yourself in the margins. As
you read, write any questions or comments that crop up
in your mind in the margin next to the passage
• Step Four: Place a star next to important passages. This
is extremely helpful when taking a test that requires you
to read a passage, because the questions that follow the
reading will most likely refer back to these points.

• Step Five: If you read something in the passage that
relates to something else, draw arrows.
• Step Six: Did you read something funny? Draw a happy
face.
• Step Seven: T Did you come across something that looks
like it might possibly be on a test? Put a big T next to it.
• Step Eight: Sum Did you read something that
summarizes the reading? Write Sum
• LAB CONTRACT IS DUE:
• Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at the end of class.

• For Wednesday:
• Annotation Reading Strategy using an essay from “This I Believe”
website
• Prepare for Literature Circle #2
