Dear Luxury Traveller
By opening this brochure, you have taken the first step to giving yourself the luxury holiday
you deserve. I would urge you to take one further step and allow us to bring these pages
to life by speaking to one of our luxury specialists. We share your passion for travel and
there is nothing more we enjoy than hearing your holiday plans and helping you fulfil them.
It would be our pleasure to prepare a personalised itinerary and quotation on any property
and if you can’t see what you’re looking for, please just ask and we will source it for you –
we specialise in bespoke luxury travel.
Asia is an extremely popular destination, not just for the culture and beaches but the
outstanding levels of service that come as standard, and this year we’re delighted to be
adding Laos to our portfolio.
Australia and New Zealand are fabulous touring destinations and once considered so far
away that they were out of reach for a holiday. Now, with superb flight networks both
nationally and internationally, a two week holiday ‘Down Under’ is definitely possible and
highly recommended.
Alternatively, combine both Asia and Australasia and let us put together your ultimate trip
of a lifetime, including these and some of our new additions such as Fiji and French
Polynesia. It’s what we do best.
Thank you for taking the time to look through this brochure. We appreciate your time is
precious and how important your ‘down time’ is. Getting your holiday right is a
responsibility we take very seriously.
Enjoy choosing your next holiday and we look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully
Nathan Philpot

10. Elegant Lifestyles
We’re delighted you’ve chosen our Asia & Australasia
brochure, now allow us to help you select the type of
holiday you want.
Weddings and Honeymoons
Couples wishing to get married or spend their honeymoon in Asia and Australasia
have a range of fantastic destinations to choose from. Thailand and Bali, with their
legendary levels of hospitality, make a perfect wedding or honeymoon venue while
Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific all offer romantic settings and are
popular choices for couples looking to renew their vows. Our Travel Consultants
would be delighted to help you with any or all of your wedding and honeymoon plans
– please feel free to call for advice on location, services and pre/post arrangements.
Spa
Nothing enhances the relaxation of a great holiday like some first-class pampering.
Asia has long been a front runner in spa culture and, as such, alongside their spa’s
exotic locations you’ll find a wonderful range of treatments and disciplines to benefit
from. Some of the Australian spas are amongst the world’s best; many are
international in design, some rather more authentic, while treatments in the Fijian and
French Polynesian spas often specialise in a more holistic approach. Within the
brochure we’ve highlighted the properties that feature a full spa and our Travel
Consultants will be happy to help you select the resort and pre-book any treatments.
Families
At Elegant Resorts we understand that those of you travelling with children might
need a little extra help to ensure your holidays are ‘effortlessly stylish’. While the
destinations featured in this brochure take a lot longer to reach, they are certainly
worth it. Our Travel Consultants would be happy to advise on child-friendly airlines and
if travelling to Australia, New Zealand or the South Pacific, you might consider a stop-
over en route to ensure the entire family arrives refreshed and ready for their big
adventure. Many of our featured properties have excellent facilities for children and
we’ve highlighted those that include children’s clubs. It’s worth noting that some of the
properties in Australia are not particularly suited to very young children, as they only
accept children of thirteen years and over. We will be happy to advise on this and any
necessary pre-booking arrangements.
Experiences
Destinations such as New Zealand and Australia, in particular, are perfect for the more
adventurous traveller and our Travel Consultants would be happy to create a bespoke
itinerary, offering recommendations and suggestions, to ensure you get the most out
of your holiday experience – whether that’s a private tour of the Olgas, a visit to one
of New Zealand’s premier vineyards or a flight over the Great Barrier Reef.
Villas
If you’re looking for a holiday that combines a unique setting and first-class facilities
with total freedom and complete privacy, then a luxury villa is the perfect solution.
We’ve a hand-picked selection of privately owned villas in the Caribbean and Europe;
some small and intimate, others larger houses ideal for groups with plenty of
distractions to occupy guests of all ages. At all of the villas you’ll enjoy the service of
your own staff – a butler, housekeeper and a gardener; perhaps even your own chef
– all helping to make your holiday experience an unforgettable one.

16. Bhutan
Dominated by the mighty snow-capped mountains of the Himalayas, Bhutan is a country still steeped in traditions and
cultures dating back to the beginning of time; class has been abolished, the female line inherits and thirty per cent of
the population enters a monastery….
‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’, Bhutan is a country filled with myths and ancient customs.
Extraordinary and totally unique, hemmed in by towering peaks, it boasts one of the last
untouched mountain cultures on Earth. Wedged between China to the north and India to the
west, it has long remained a mystery to the western world. It’s a country where a serene lifestyle
and a traditional Mahayana Buddhist way of life hasn’t changed for centuries; religious festivals
take place throughout the year, accompanied by dazzling pageants of dance and ceremony and
much laughter. Mountain climbing is banned to preserve the pristine forests that laws dictate must
cover sixty per cent of the country and the Bhutanese still go about in public in their national
dress – a colourful striped knee-length robe for men and an embroidered silk jacket with a wrap-
around skirt for women. In the Thimphu Valley, site of Bhutan’s capital Thimphu, you’ll find the only
capital city in the world that doesn’t have a single set of traffic lights.
But change is coming to this small Himalayan kingdom, deeply at ease with itself. King Jigme
Singye Wangchuck who famously declared he was more concerned with his people’s Gross
National Happiness than GNP, has abdicated in favour of a constitutional monarchy, so that the
future of Bhutan lies in the hands of the people themselves. While the country has been an
eccentric holdout from modernity, a few jeans have appeared in town, traffic is increasing and
there is now internet and satellite Television.
With a rich geography spanning sub-tropical plains, densely wooded valleys and windswept
slopes above the snowline, Bhutan offers an immense diversity of flora and fauna. There are an
estimated 770 varieties of birds and more than fifty species of rhododendron alone. The country is
also home to many rare animals, including the elusive snow leopard, blue sheep, tiger and yak.
Throughout your stay you will see lots of colourful prayer flags adorning houses, elaborate
bridges, mountain passes and forest clearings; national treasures such as Punakha Dzong, one of
Bhutan’s most significant and impressive fortress monasteries and the jewel in Bhutan’s crown,
the temple of Taktshang Goemba or Tiger’s Nest dating back to the eighth century. Legend has it
that the temple’s site was chosen when Guru Rinpoche visited the country with his Tibetan
consort, a woman who turned herself into a flaming tigress to subdue the local deities. Clinging to
a ledge 800 metres above the valley floor the goemba is reached via a trail that winds up through
blue pines and rhododendrons, little disturbs the myriad of pilgrims and visitors except the tinkling
of prayer wheels and the occasional sound of a pony.
Although weather conditions can be unpredictable you’ll find autumn and winter months cool and dry
with much warmer springs and summers (September – March) with occasional afternoon showers
that help disperse the humidity. Bhutan is the world’s last Buddhist kingdom and only opened its
borders to outsiders in the 1970s. Today, a limited number of visitors are allowed entry each year.

The Amankora Journey
Amanresorts of Bhutan specialise in creating individual treks to suit
all levels of ability and preferences – this particular journey includes
a stay at each of the five Aman lodges – each one unique and each
one sympathetically designed to create the least impact on the
surrounding environment.
Day 1: Thimphu
Arrive Thimphu: 2 nights at Amankora Thimphu. Whilst in Thimphu you’ll have the
opportunity to visit museums, the National Library; Trashi Chhoe Dzong, the seat of
Bhutan’s government and royal offices and Pangri Zampa, two 16th century buildings
that now house a monastic training school for astrologers. Should you wish to, you can
also visit a few of the capital’s cottage industries ranging in crafts from traditional paper
making to hand-rolled incense.
Day 3: Gangtey
Transfer to Phobjika Valley: 2 nights at Amankora Gangtey. A dramatic drive over the
high mountain pass of Dochu La into the Phobjika Valley offers glimpses of the
Himalayan mountains and the Simtokha Dzong, Bhutan’s first fortress monastery.
Whilst in the Phobjika Valley you can enjoy a visit to the Black Neck Crane Centre
where, depending on the season, you may be lucky enough to spend time in the
centre’s hide and view the breeding cranes.
Day 5: Bumthang
Transfer to Bumthang: 3 nights at Amankora Bumthang. A long but memorable
journey to Bumthang provides dramatic landscapes of terraced farmlands and
precariously perched farmhouses. En route there’ll be opportunities to visit the original
home of the royal family, Trongsa Dzong – ancestral home of Bhutan’s monarch and in
the Chhume Valley, see some Yatra weaving. The next day’s highlights include Kurjey
Lhakhan, one of Bhutan’s most auspicious monuments and some of the valley’s unique
cottage industries: Red Panda Brewery, Bumthang Cheese/Dairy Facility and the
Bumthang Distillery.
Day 8: Punakha
Transfer to Punakha Valley: 2 nights at Amankora Punakha. During your stay in the
Punakha Valley you’ll enjoy a hike through fields of chillies, cabbages and rice to the
Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning monument built by the kingdom’s four
queens. Back down through the valley you’ll have time to take in the impressive
Punakha Dzong, home to the remains of Bhutan’s first ruler, Shabdrung Nawang
Namgyal and the winter residence of the monastic order’s leader and his entourage of
monks. Enjoy a picnic lunch before visiting Talo where you can walk amongst the quiet
grounds of the village’s temple.
Day 10: Paro

include a visit to the National Museum; the Paro Dzong – a grand example of
Bhutanese architecture and even a visit to a traditional farmhouse to lunch with a

coastal resort of Hua Hin – the oldest and probably most traditional
Thai resort, successfully combining the charms of yesteryear with
modern day facilities. Head north to Chiang Mai and visit gilded
temples and museums, or take an elephant ride into nearby forests
to glimpse the lifestyle of remote hill-tribes. Finally don’t forget the
famous Night Market – it’s one of the best in the country!
