Why do a session on Edmodo
     for early learners?

Do we really
need a special
 session just
 about young
children using
   Edmodo?
Because young children:
 Have limited reading skills
 Have a greater need to learn through the use of
    pictures
 Have great difficulty typing in URLs
 Need easier access to digital files shared by their
    teachers.
 Are more likely to succeed with emotional
support from their teachers (more easily
delivered digitally as opposed to “on paper”)
 Have limited attention spans and often need
    reminders
 Should be taught how to communicate
appropriately using technology at an early age
Support for Homework
How do I post assignments and
directions if my students can’t read?!

         “Got
         Microphone??”
Support for Homework
      How do I post assignment
directions if my students can’t read?!

                Video upload
All of these options allow you
  to embed audio and video
directly to your Edmodo feed,
without the need to link to
         outside sights.
Aside from uploading
worksheets, how can teachers
 be creative with homework
       using Edmodo?

    What motivates your
students?? (I’m willing to bet,
    it’s not worksheets!)
Creative Learning Activities
  Scavenger hunts
  Links to on-line assignments
  Simple recipes
 Access to digital storybooks on-line
 Photo uploads of shared student work
   (pictures, projects, recorded
   video, etc.)
 Links to educational videos (School-
   Tube, You-Tube, Discovery
   Education, etc.)
URLs: What’s the big deal?
How long would it take a first grader to type
this URL?

   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5IhPXEKNGE

                             POST
                           THAT LINK
                              TO
                           EDMODO!
Great Sites for Young Children
 Vocabulary Spelling City – free site that allows
students to enter spelling words into the site and
   choose spelling games.
 IXL.com – allows you to post a link on
Edmodo that leads to a practice area for a
particular skill set broken down by grade level
   (gives immediate feedback)
  Math.com – same as above
 ABCYA – Educational games separated by
   grade level
Support for Language Arts
Ideas for assignments at home:
• Phoneme scavenger hunt: find 4 items in your
home that begin with /ch/ sound
• Noun/Adjective scavenger hunt: describe three
items in your house using a noun and an
     adjective
• Finish the following sentence with a fitting word
• Post a picture and have students write describing
     words about that picture
• Write one sentence about what you learned in
     school today/on a class trip/at an assembly
Digital Storybooks:
 Tarheel Reader: Free books, created by
  students and teachers, read aloud
 Story Place: Free slightly animated stories
  with spoken speech bubbles
 Storyline Online: Free, well known books
read by well known actors and actresses.
 Mightybooks: Free, excellent well known
books, read aloud, text is highlighted as
  read
Using Edmodo to Support Math
 Create your own “I-Spy” picture with Classroom
Items and Count “How many?” of each item. For
older students, how many more of one than the
other, or, add the number of two types of items.
 Use your document camera to create a video that
shows how to use manipulatives to count, sort and
  show computation
 Count the number of steps, windows, doors,
pictures, glasses, keys, etc. in your house
 Support the introduction of fractions: post a simple
recipe with ingredients measured in halves, thirds or
  quarter cups
Lesson Plan Ideas:
               Example 1
Math: First Grade, Measuring length of objects
Standard: 1.MD.1. Order three objects by length;
compare the lengths of two objects indirectly by using
a third object

How to teach using Edmodo:
1. Upload a paper ruler to Edmodo for cutting out
2. Post auditory and written directions
3. Have students work alone or in groups
4. Students reply on Edmodo with the measurement of the
3 objects, listing item names and lengths in size order.
5. Discuss in findings in class
Lesson Plan Ideas:
                  Example 2
Writing: Second Grade, Text Types and Purposes
W.2.2. Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a
topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding
statement or section

How to teach using Edmodo:
1. Students are to be separated into small groups of two or three
2. Auditory and written directions posted to Edmodo
3. Students are given a choice of topics to read about in order to collect
facts. Topic list document with corresponding websites are posted up
    on Edmodo.
4. Students in each group discuss and agree on a an introductory topic
sentence. Teacher posts the topic sentence to the small group area in
Edmodo. Then students take turns replying to that post, adding
sentences, one at a time. Students must use proper
    grammar, punctuation and spelling.
5. When the written assignment is complete, click “share” under the
original post to share the story with the entire group.
Starting them Young with
        Good Habits
Right from the start:
 Encourage proper spelling and grammar –
  no txt talk!
 Teach Good “Netiquette” – if you can’t say
  something nice…
 Take pride in your work: do your best, you
  have an audience!
 Don’t copy other people’s work, be
  original
Thank you for attending!

Edmodo for Young Learners Presented By Janet DeSenzo

  • 1. Janet Barone-DeSenzo Technology Coach/AT Specialist Group Code: Vernon Township School District f51bzf Vernon, NJ @jantechnj
  • 2. Why do a session on Edmodo for early learners? Do we really need a special session just about young children using Edmodo?
  • 3. Because young children:  Have limited reading skills  Have a greater need to learn through the use of pictures  Have great difficulty typing in URLs  Need easier access to digital files shared by their teachers.  Are more likely to succeed with emotional support from their teachers (more easily delivered digitally as opposed to “on paper”)  Have limited attention spans and often need reminders  Should be taught how to communicate appropriately using technology at an early age
  • 4. Support for Homework How do I post assignments and directions if my students can’t read?! “Got Microphone??”
  • 5. Support for Homework How do I post assignment directions if my students can’t read?! Video upload
  • 6. All of these options allow you to embed audio and video directly to your Edmodo feed, without the need to link to outside sights.
  • 7. Aside from uploading worksheets, how can teachers be creative with homework using Edmodo? What motivates your students?? (I’m willing to bet, it’s not worksheets!)
  • 8. Creative Learning Activities  Scavenger hunts  Links to on-line assignments  Simple recipes  Access to digital storybooks on-line  Photo uploads of shared student work (pictures, projects, recorded video, etc.)  Links to educational videos (School- Tube, You-Tube, Discovery Education, etc.)
  • 9. URLs: What’s the big deal? How long would it take a first grader to type this URL? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5IhPXEKNGE POST THAT LINK TO EDMODO!
  • 10. Great Sites for Young Children  Vocabulary Spelling City – free site that allows students to enter spelling words into the site and choose spelling games.  IXL.com – allows you to post a link on Edmodo that leads to a practice area for a particular skill set broken down by grade level (gives immediate feedback)  Math.com – same as above  ABCYA – Educational games separated by grade level
  • 11. Support for Language Arts Ideas for assignments at home: • Phoneme scavenger hunt: find 4 items in your home that begin with /ch/ sound • Noun/Adjective scavenger hunt: describe three items in your house using a noun and an adjective • Finish the following sentence with a fitting word • Post a picture and have students write describing words about that picture • Write one sentence about what you learned in school today/on a class trip/at an assembly
  • 12. Digital Storybooks:  Tarheel Reader: Free books, created by students and teachers, read aloud  Story Place: Free slightly animated stories with spoken speech bubbles  Storyline Online: Free, well known books read by well known actors and actresses.  Mightybooks: Free, excellent well known books, read aloud, text is highlighted as read
  • 13. Using Edmodo to Support Math  Create your own “I-Spy” picture with Classroom Items and Count “How many?” of each item. For older students, how many more of one than the other, or, add the number of two types of items.  Use your document camera to create a video that shows how to use manipulatives to count, sort and show computation  Count the number of steps, windows, doors, pictures, glasses, keys, etc. in your house  Support the introduction of fractions: post a simple recipe with ingredients measured in halves, thirds or quarter cups
