The Definition	 Values The ideas and beliefs that guide your life A thing or idea that is important to you
Two Main Groups Tangible house, car, pets, jewellery, books, money, stereo, clothes, video games, artwork Intangible trust, independence, friendship, education, love, religion, creativity, knowledge
Learning and Developing Values We begin learning values at birth Many are learned from the way we are raised Family  /friend / people influence Many are learned from our own personal experiences Environmental / experiential influences
The Common Good (Utilitarianism) A phrase / idea used in many places The biggest positive effect for the largest amount of people. An action following this rule is called utilitarian
Values and Adolescence Adolescence is an important time for our development Also the development of values When choosing values, ask yourself… Is this value positive or negative? (vague) Will it bring happiness or pain? (better) Is it better for the common good, or better for only me?  (best) utilitarian (good) or selfish (bad) Aim to satisfy both!
