  1. 1. 4 Hugh Vol. 42 August 1, 2017 Number 29 Growing Closer to God… Through Discipline We should all desire to grow closer to God each and every day. How one does such is constantly being asked by many who want a better relationship with God. The Bible plainly teaches “Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you” (Jas. 4:8). One draws “nigh” to God through studying the word of God (2 Tim. 2:15), praying fervently (1 Thess. 5:17), faithfully attending worship (Heb. 10:25), and abounding in the Lord’s work (1 Cor. 15:58). But to be able to do such, there is need for discipline. Discipline is defined as “training that is expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior; controlled behavior resulting from such training.” The apostle Paul compares the life of a Christian to the discipline of an athlete: “Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway” (1 Cor. 9:24-27). Paul points out that not everyone who enters the race receives the winning prize. The ones who do are “temperate in all things.” That is, an athlete makes sure he has a proper training routine. His exercise is difficult, strenuous, and even painful at times. He gets plenty of rest and eats a proper diet. The serious athlete even goes as far as to avoid activities and thought patterns which will sap him of his energy and determination. --article continued on page 2-- ELDERS Mike Childers..............397-6453 Dennis Hallmark .........255-5557 Mike Ratliff.................840-2206 DEACONS Wade Bryan.................419-5552 William Harris.............416-8149 Mark Hitt.....................322-0917 Bobby Lindley.............869-0546 Ricky Lindsey .............844-9944 Jeff Mansel..................871-0357 Harold Roby................844-5431 Joe Smith.....................397-4524 Jimmy Spearman.........840-8957 Michael Wilson ...........891-0891 PREACHER Gary Williams .............840-5804 SECRETARY Renee Childers Office...........................842-6116 Fax...............................842-7091 E-MAIL churchofchr27789@bellsouth.net SUNDAY SERVICES Bible Classes............... 9:45 a.m. Morning Worship...... 10:45 a.m. Evening Worship.........5:00 p.m. Singing or Devotional Last Sunday of the Month MID-WEEK SERVICES Wednesday Classes .....7:00 p.m. EAST MAIN CHURCH OF CHRIST 1606 East Main Street P. 2. 2. --article continued from page 1-- It is the same way with the Christian who desires to enter into the kingdom of God. He/she must stay focused on Christ with crossing the finish line as the goal. In our society, we have been flooded with a life of self-indulgences. It is easy to lose self- control. But didn’t the apostle John say “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world” (1 Jn. 2:15)? The only remedy is discipline. To the Christian, a disciple of Jesus Christ, one must train or discipline himself to follow after Jesus. Remember the words of Jesus, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Discipline? Definitely.
