  1. 1. 4 Vol. 46 July 20, 2021 Number 27 I WANT PATIENCE AND I WANT IT NOW! Barry Kennedy Is this how far Christians have come? Of course, life has become the pursuit of instant gratification for many. The fast-food restaurant is still not fast enough. There are drive through drug stores, banks, and even convenient stores, and still, many complain. These modern conveniences have had an effect even among the Lord’s church. We want the blessings God has to offer, but we are not willing to go the distance to obtain them. Noah desperately needed the blessings of God, but for Noah and his family to live, he had to build an ark (Genesis 6). Moses wanted to lead the children of Israel out of bondage and into the promised land, but he had to give up the pleasures of sin (Hebrews 11:24-25). Patience is “the ability to endure waiting, delay, or provocation without becoming annoyed or upset, or to persevere calmly when faced with difficulties” (Encarta). Moses is known as the meekest man (Numbers 12:3), but his patience was lost in the face of Israel’s murmuring (Numbers 20:7-12). Moses lost his hope of entering the promised land of Canaan because he lost his patience. Some would say, “How can anyone blame him?” We must take note of the fact that God is serious about what He says. Patience comes as a result of trials. “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience” (James 1:2, 3). Developing patience is not an overnight sensation but a foundation laid with the bricks of hardship. Laying a good foundation takes skill, precision, and yes, much patience. James was encouraging every child of God to see the trials of life as the building blocks of patience. Patience will comfort the child of God in his time of hardship (James 1:3, 4). When Christians allow patience to have its “perfect work,” they can be complete and wanting nothing. An impatient mind is never at peace, and never feeling complete. Consider the patriarch Job. He carries the title of the most patient man to have lived, excluding the Savior. Job had to face some of the most gruesome trials ever recorded. 2. 2. --article continued from page 1-- allowed the opportunity to take Job’s wealth, family, and even his health (Job 1-2). Satan’s work did not stop with the afore mentioned trials, he used the friends of Job to torment him further. No doubt, the words of these “friends” tore deep into the heart of Job. Job was a righteous man who feared the Lord and hated evil (Job 1:1). All the trials Job faced were mysterious to him because he did not understand why he was being persecuted. Job knew that he had not committed the sinful atrocities of which his “friends” were accusing him. Therefore, his patient endurance toward God was the only comfort he had left. Remember, even his wife failed to give him good council (Job 2:9). God blessed Job with more than he had in the beginning, but don’t forget, it was not until the end of the persecutions. Job was a patient child of God, and he found comfort as a result. How comforted are we in our trials? “Give me patience and give it to me now!” This statement is contradictory. Many joke about patience and never take it seriously. Patience is one of the many great blessing God expects His children to possess. Don’t get in too big of a hurry trying to possess patience. Jesus said, “Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8). This would include the obtaining of patience. We should seek patience but be prepared to endure the trials before you can expect the comforts. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program would like to thank everyone who bought school supplies for the backpacks we will be delivering to area schools.
