GOD IS SPEAKING, ARE WE LISTENING?
Barry Kennedy
Picture this, you are sitting at home watching TV. As usual there is nothing
worth watching, so you find yourself “channel-surfing.” As you go through the
many different channels, you happen across a televangelist who captures your
interest. He is dressed in an Armani suit with gold rings and a huge gold watch. He
is preaching a message about how God is trying to tell you how to have your
financial wheelbarrow overflowing. He talks about how God “laid it upon his
heart” to ask you to send in your “love offering” so that He (God) can bless you.
After all, you know the Bible says, “Give and it shall be given unto you...” (Luke
6:38). Of course, there are many other messages that God has supposedly delivered
to man through recent “revelations.” Preachers who claim that the Lord literally
“spoke to them” are a dime a dozen. However, when pressed to “prove” God spoke
to them, one will find that they are explaining more of a feeling or “premonition”
instead of actual conversation. Friends, Moses did not “feel like” God spoke to
him, nor did Abraham, Isaac, or any other person about whom we read in the
Bible. They literally heard the voice of God.
The question is, “Does God still speak to man today?” The brief and
immediate answer is “yes!” However, that answer must be followed with another
question, “How?” To answer the question of how will help to answer the question
of this article, God is speaking, are we listening?
God speaks to us with words. Words are vehicles that carry man to the
destination of understanding. It is not a mystery that God would use words to
direct mankind into the way that he should worship, live, and even die. This truth
is clearly seen by the words of the Psalmist: “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet,
and a light unto my path” (Psalm 119:105). The Psalmist emphatically stated that
the Word of God must be the directing source for how we walk this life. It is hard
to imagine setting out on the journey of life without a map to help us find our way.
Most people, whether they admit it or not, have had to ask for directions.
Imagine being invited to someone’s home you have never visited, but they did not
give you an address or any directions as to how to get there. You would probably
think that they did not really want you to visit. However, if they give us directions
but we do not listen, then we are the ones not showing proper interest. It only
makes sense that you would likely get lost. With that in mind, how well are we
listening to God’s directions to His house? His Word has made it very clear that

“Thou shalt observe to do all that they inform thee”
(Deut. 17:10)
--article continued from page 1—
He wants us to be with Him (John 14:1-6). He is
the Way, the Truth and the Life.” (John 14:6). The
way being the opportunity for an entrance into those
mansions; the truth being the directions recorded in
His Word (cf. John 17:17); and the life being that
lifestyle we are to follow in order to make our
calling and election sure (1 Peter 2:21, 22; 2 Peter
1:10). If we choose not to listen to His directions,
then we will be lost (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).
The Bible is proof that God is still speaking
today. Paul informed young Timothy that “All
scripture is given by inspiration (i.e. God breathed)
of God, . . .” (2 Timothy 3:16). Some may try to
boast, “give me the ’red letter’ verses and you can
keep the rest.” The person who would make this
statement is trying to say that only the “words of
Christ” are worthy of our consideration. The
problem with this line of thinking is pointed out in
Paul’s previous writing to Timothy. “ALL
scripture...” that means all, including the Old
Testament (Romans 15:4). Of course, the Bible is
made up of; you guessed it, words! The question
that must follow this line of thinking is, “Are we
listening to those words?” Do we take time to
meditate upon the truths of God through the divine
revelation (John 5:39; 1 Timothy 4:13-16)? God
wants man to know Him and to have assurance of
salvation (John 8:31-36).
How confident are we about our own
salvation? Do we rest our heads at night in denial of
the inevitable, or in the confidence of our loving
Savior? Samuel heard the words of the Lord calling
to him (1 Samuel 3:1-8). It was not until Samuel
realized Who it was that was talking that he
understood. It was at that point that Samuel could
say, “Speak; for Thy servant heareth” (1 Samuel
3:10). Samuel listened to understand. God is still
speaking through His Word, are we listening?
