Could I Say That?
(Copied from “The Oakey Boulevard News”)
One of the most thought-provoking sermons I have ever read was entitled, "Could you
Say That?" by George W. Bailey. The lesson consisted of a question followed by
statements made by men throughout the Bible. Each point was concluded with the soul
penetrating question "Could you say that?" There were five questions: 1) Could you say
what Jesus said; 2) could you say what Paul said?; 3) could you say what David said?; 4)
could you say what Nehemiah said?; and 5) could you say what the Ethiopian eunuch said?
The lesson can easily be expanded to many additional areas. Again, look carefully at the
question, "Could You Say That?" and then ask yourself:
Could I say I am ready for the return of Christ? "Watch ye therefore, for ye know
not when the master of the house cometh, at even or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or
in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say
unto all, Watch" (Mark 13:35-37).
Could I say I daily study the Scriptures? "Study to show thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15).
Could I say I try to teach the lost? "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even
unto the end of the world. Amen" (Matthew 28:19-20).
Could I say I am truly converted? "Repent ye therefore and be converted, that your
sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the
Lord" (Acts 3:19).
Could I say I am not ashamed of Christ and his word? "Whosoever therefore shall
be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also
shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy
angels" (Mark 8:38).
Could I say my days are filled with prayer? "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thess. 5:17).
Could I say I am worldly? "Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the
friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore will be a friend of the
world is the enemy of God" (James 4:4).
Could I say I fulfill my role as husband, wife, and child? "Wives, submit yourselves
unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not
bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the
Lord.Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged" (Col. 3:18-21).
The series of questions that can be developed from that one question (Could You Say
That?) are limitless. The objective, of course, is for one to open his heart to the inspired
word of God and make any and all corrections needed. It is so refreshing to know that
when we do this "our slate," so to speak, is wiped clean and we begin anew! "If we confess
our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unright-
eousness" (1 John 1:9). “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is
a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love.

2. The Grumbler
In every town and city,
Some people can be found,
Who spend their time in grumbling,
At everything around.
They grumble if we speak to them.
They grumble if we won’t.
They grumble if we visit them.
They grumble if we don’t.
They grumble at the preaching.
They grumble at the prayer.
They grumble at the singing
They grumble everywhere.
But if we live for Jesus,
And persecutions bear,
When we get to heaven
There will be no grumblers there!!
