4. Definitions Body Image: Concept of one's physical appearance based on self-observation & reactions of others. Body Fat Ratio: Amount of body fat in relation to total body weight. Overweight: weighing 10% or more of what is considered his or her recommended healthy weight Obesity: Increased body weight caused by excessive accumulation of fat. Putting oneself at greater risk for illness and disease.

Insulin; hormone that regulates the absorption of sugar into your cells. -The more fatty tissue you have, the more resistant your cells become to insulin.

12. Anorexia Nervosa Greek meaning "lack of appetite” Eating disorder determined by low body weight and body image distortion. Obsessive fear of gaining weight. Anorexia includes starving oneself, excessive exercise, & excessive use of diet pills or laxatives. 10% males 10-15% become fatal
13. Anorexia signs/symptoms Thin but believe they need to lose weight. Continues to restrict foods despite not being overweight. Food Label Obsession May limit eating to certain kinds of food. Cereal, bagels, plain salads, and vegetables are frequently foods of choice. May wear layers of clothes to hide his/her body.
14. Bulimia nervosa A person with bulimia eats a lot of food in a short amount of time(binging.) Fear of gaining weight after a binge. Binging causes feelings of shame and guilt. Person tries to "undo" the binge by getting rid of the food. This is called purging.
