I am 19 years old, next fall will be my Sophomore year at

From Stillwater, MN

3. BIRTH
Born in the year 1830
Daughter of a Massachusetts
lawyer and Amherst College
Treasurer, Edward Dickinson.
Her father served one year in the
US House of Representatives

4. CHILDHOOD
One year spent at Mount
Holyoke Female Seminary,
not wanting to be
converted
She spent the rest of her
days at her fathers.

5. LIFE
Emily Dickinson clung to her family throughout her life.
She remained close to her brother and sister and both of her
parents
The death of her father and of her mother devastated her
and influenced her poetry
Although she lived to 55, Emily Dickinson never married
and remained in her family home for most of her life.

6. HER WORK
Emily Dickinson started composing verses that went
beyond the “women’s Sphere” of her time.
She went through no formal training for writing
Very little of her work was published during her lifetime
Today her poems are looked upon as some of the greatest
works in the English Language

7. DEATH
Her death in 1886
The death certificate stated that the cause of death was
Bright’s Disease
Several years prior to her death several of her close friends
died along the sad death of her mother from severe
hypertension

8. INDUCTION
Emily Dickinson was inducted into the Women’s hall of
Fame in 1973.
Her original, pre-modernist style poetry lead her to be
noted among poets such as Walt Whitman, T.S. Elliot and
Robert Frost.
This women is truly deserving of the recognition she
receives from her work.
