The Story of the 2000-Watt-Society
Once upon a time, Swiss researchers and fore-thinkers had a vision for a world in which energy resources are used in a sustainable and fair way, where every human being has access to 2000 Watt of power.
Every day Swiss people use 3 to 4 times more power than that.
But, one day politicians, researchers and the public realized that we cannot continue like that.
Because of that politics decided to set energy-saving targets and many Swiss cities, held binding referenda to make the 2000-Watt-Society part of their legislation.
However, until we will reach this target, there is still a lot to do. This not only concerns energy efficient technologies but also changes of behavior and lifestyles.
And, ever since then, politicians, authorities, SMEs and the Swiss people are developing measures to reduce the energy demand in Switzerland.
The end.

Interview with initiator of 2000-Watt-Vision: Selected key lessons learnt
Create awareness:
•Concise vision with a good name
•Make it concrete lighthouse projects
•Active pioneers are important

Communication & addressing the public:
•Specify: What does this mean for YOUR daily life?
•Give advice for concrete action and show examples of “landmark” people and families
•Address different groups in their particular language

Top-down and bottom-up:
•Both approaches have worked in Switzerland
•Examples of Basel (bottom-up) and Zürich (top down)
Zürich:
Rather driven by policies, votes, etcc
Basel: Rather driven by projects
Together with Geneva, Basel and Zürich are core cities of the 2000-Watt-Sociecty in Switzerland!

Interview with initiator of 2000-Watt-Vision: Selected key lessons learnt
Start from technologies:
•A rather technical approach can make things easier at the start
•Broad support for better buildings and more efficient technologies
•Move on to the more challenging: behaviour change
