Greetings from your Editor – This is a
succinct mail‐shot, to hear from our
newly appointed Chair Dr Sadgun
Bhandari, and to notify the member‐
ship of the upcoming Autumn Meeting
on Friday 29th Nov 2013 at Radisson
Blu Stansted. The theme is ‘New Fron‐
tiers’ in our psychiatric services.
Much work has been put in by our new
Academic Secretary Abdul Raoof and
his colleagues. Professor Sir Simon
Wessely of King’s College London has
kindly agreed to deliver the keynote
address.
As always, we are looking for contribu‐
tions for our twice‐a‐year newsletter.

We would like to see articles on a wide range of topics of general interest to clinicians in the Eastern Region.
This might include clinical issues, developments in psychiatry, service provision, regional news, experiences,
book reviews etc. Creative contributions involving poems and photos will also be considered. Please limit contributions to a maximum of 800 words unless agreed with the Editor. The Editorial Committee reserves the
right to edit contributions as deemed necessary. Shorter typed contributions are acceptable. Contributions
should be submitted in a recognisable Windows format by email. Letters should not exceed 200 words.
Authors are encouraged to include a digital colour photo of themselves.

Chair’s Column
It is a great privilege to be elected as the Chair of the Division. As the incoming chair I would like to thank Dr
Girling for doing such an excellent job for the last 4 years. I would also like to thank all the members of the Ex‐
ecutive Committee who volunteer so much of their time and effort to the activities of the Division and the suc‐
cess of the Division is due to their combined effort.
In the last newsletter the Chair had announced the College’s move to new premises at 21 Prescot Street, Lon‐
don E1. It is amazing to think that the College has in fact already moved this month. All the reports so far have
been extremely positive. In fact the Division is organising one of the forthcoming Executive Committee meet‐
ings at 21 Prescot Street.
The theme of organisational changes as well as changes to individual jobs continues from the last newsletter.
The College remains concerned about the implications this has on the members. In the region itself the Regis‐
trar, Dr Laurence Mynors‐Wallis met with affected Consultants to provide support. The main worry is the effect
on the quality of patient care provided.
The Registrar is finalising a College Report on “When patients should be seen by a Psychiatrist”. This report is
written to clarify for commissioners and providers of mental health services when patients should be seen by a
psychiatrist in order to ensure that they receive safe, high quality, evidence based care. It focuses on the ex‐
perience and expertise of a Consultant Psychiatrist.
One of the areas we need to work on is engaging the membership and we have written to new Members wel‐
coming them to the Division. We have also invited them to join the Executive Committee for dinner on the eve
of the next Academic Meeting. Talking of which, the next meeting will be an interesting meeting covering the
new frontiers of Psychiatric Services. It is the first time it is being held in Essex and will be at the Stansted Rad‐
dison Blu on the 29th of November. Keeping with the commitment of the Division to encourage trainees and
medical students, there will be a poster exhibition with special prizes for Foundation Year trainees and stu‐
dents.
