- This presentation will provides a general introduction to the Conceptua Math website and the design features of the free fraction tools by Conceptua Math. It is important to note that these tools are free and will remain free.
- According to the Final Report of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel (2008), understanding fractions is a “foundation skill essential to success with algebra” (3). The report also states that completion of Algebra II correlates highly with future academic success as well as earning potential.

- The focus of the Conceptua Math team is on improving instruction in mathematics, specifically in the area of fractions. As part of our mission, we’ve created a site with free tools that teachers and parents can use to help model fractions concepts and link them to procedures. Our site has sample lesson plans, alignment to NCTM standards, and sample IEP goals. The tools include fraction circles, horizontal and vertical bars, number lines, etc., all organized into critical skill areas such as identifying fractions, adding and subtracting, estimating, finding common denominators and more. There are three distinct components of the Conceptua Math Website. The first, Free Tools for Teachers is what will be demonstrated during this workshop, the second is a premium subscription of student independent activities coming in the fall and the third is a community which provides teachers with further information on research, best practice, access to experts and updates on new tools and features. Briefly, the purpose of the site is to.. Support Elementary and middle school students in learning fractions Support teachers in teaching fractions in a meaningful, enjoyable and successful Instructional format Support and focus on the Teacher/Student interactions Create a Learning Community that is a Destination for Fractions instruction that support ongoing learning and instructional materials
- Tools work with interactive white boards. Teacher can choose the models to work with or use multiple models Teacher can systematically begin with models only and move to numbers only
- The free tools for whole-class instruction build the path from concepts to procedures and higher order thinking. Tools include fraction circles, horizontal and vertical bars, area model, dots (discrete), number line, benchmark fractions, unitizing with pattern blocks and more. The tools are organized into these two groups. Teaching a CRA (concepts to procedures) format is research based and helps students develop and understanding of fraction procedures prior to learning the “rules” for working with fractions. It brings meaning to the “rules”. Critical thinking tools are build a more flexible understanding of fractions as students apply what they have learned and think critically about fractions.
