  2. 2. Introduction  A board-certified neurosurgeon, Dr. Michael Thomas practices at the Sea Spine Orthopedic Institute in Orlando, Florida. To help him remain up-to-date on changes made within the industry, neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Thomas maintains membership with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Founded in 1897 by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, the AOA began as the American Association for the Advancement of Osteopathy, then changed to its current name in 1901. With more than 123,000 osteopathic physicians (DOs) and osteopathic medical students, the AOA promotes public health, ensures cost-effective healthcare for underserved patients, and encourages scientific research. It also accredits osteopathic medical schools, and has accredited 33 schools at 45 U.S. locations as of 2016.
  3. 3. American Osteopathic Association  An annual event co-hosted by AOA and featuring AOA- accredited schools is the Regional Osteopathic Medical Education (ROME) conference. One of three ROME conference sessions occurring in the United States this year, the Southeastern conference took place on June 9 through 12, 2016, in Charleston, South Carolina. Co- sponsored by the Georgia Osteopathic Medical Association, North Carolina Osteopathic Medical Association, and South Carolina Osteopathic Society, the conference included continuing medical education (CME) credit opportunities. Attendees listened to various speakers and visited with exhibitors.
