Education

There are many considerations for our thinking when it comes to figuring out what we
mean by a thriving community, and it is not a concept that should be narrowly
defined or static. When we search our thoughts on such an important concept, it is
one that will always be one in transition and co-created.
Activity sheet: Use the questions as a background for an open-ended discussion.
Can we be happier, healthier, and more supported in a community that is more
aimed at collective well-being and more sustainable? How much are we affected by
our communities? How much does our well-being affect our communities? Do we
thrive more when our community thrives more? Does our community thrive more
when we thrive more?
You’ve seen this before, but take another look at Jessica Perlstein’s artwork of a
reinvisioned San Francisco cityscape.
Activity sheet: Make a list of words that fit under the category of “well-being” and
another list under the category of “sustainability.” Then, choose some of the words,
and create sentences that include at least one word from each column and focus on
how they impact each other.
Look at the list of top 20 countries that are in the United Nations Happiness Index
and the top 20 countries in the Environmental Performance Index.
Activity sheet: Put the rankings of each country on both lists. Answer the questions
that follow.
Look at patterns, and provide your initial thoughts about them.

We tend to keep issues of well-being and sustainability separate when we talk about
them as if they do not affect each other. There is, however, a reason to think
otherwise. The top countries that are generally rated the highest on the United
Nations Happiness Index (full report here) are often the same countries on the
Environmental Performance Index (full report here, list of countries here). Students
will look at the two lists and analyze how similar they are. Briefly, (video here) living
sustainably can make us feel happier. It’s tied to our identities and localities.

Final Paper Task: Write a 10 to 12 page paper in which you use evidence to support your position on whether or not the American Dream of each generation being able to achieve a level of success equal to or better than the previous generation can still be realized. Objectives: This paper has two broad objectives. The first is for you to critically and thoughtfully evaluate the impact that recent social and economic trends have had on the well-being of American individuals and families. Completing this task will help you understand the context in which your future financial planning clients live and make decisions. Possessing this type of understanding distinguishes our graduates from those of other programs, and is a quality that employers of our grads have appreciated. The second objective is to give you practice in doing quantitative and qualitative research. Completing this task will enhance your skill in obtaining data, evaluating data quality, using research results to support a position, and reporting research findings clearly, concisely, and correctly. This is a vitally important skill to have in financial services. Your success in the industry will depend to a large extent on your ability to take a large amount of numerical and statistical data and present it to clients in a form they can readily understand and act upon. Things to think about as you write: Throughout the semester, we have considered how well-being should be defined and measured. Readings and discussions of pro and con views on various issues during the semester highlighted two realities. One, values play a large role in directing the choices we make and the actions we take as individuals, as family units, and as broader communities. Two, we make those value-based choices in a society and economy that can expand or constrain the number and type of options from which we choose. At the beginning of this course, we developed working definitions of individual, family, and social values. We defined "family" and noted the expectations society has of "family." Once those definitions were in place, our exploration of the ability to achieve the American Dream began. Our discussion of the impact of dual earners on family well-being raised several questions. Does it really take two incomes to "make it" these days? Have we raised our expectations of what is included in "the good life" without giving serious consideration to what we have given up to get that life? Are we simply greedy materialists? February 2011 | Vol. 32 no. 1 www.learningforward.org | JsD 57 g eoffrey Canada said in a recent presentation, “Education is the only business I know of where you can change anything you want, as long as you change nothing” (2010). After so much debate and so many policies, why is our education system still failing so many of our children? What are we either missing or pretending not to know? Reforms only work when people who implement them are on board, engaged, and valued. What gets talked about from the boardroom to the classroom, how it gets talked about, and who is invited to join the conversation determines what will happen or won’t. Are the driving conversations dividing or connecting stakeholders? Are they catalysts for change and accountability, or are they further entrenching people in fear and blame? Is mandating accountability preventing us from hearing and seeing the competing truths that exist about our students, classrooms, and schools? Amid the spinning wheels of education reform, an essential component seems to be missing: conversations that speak directly to the heart of the issue, engage people’s curiosity to uncover the truth, galvanize people, and create collective responsibility. Leadership that attempts to create accountability with top-down mandates, rather than by engaging and connecting people, leads to or exacerbates a culture of blame and excuses. Mandating accountability, while it may sound effective, simply doesn’t work. Why? Because most often in practice this approach is fueled by the same thing victimhood is fueled by — blame. And as long as that’s the case, there’s no time, energy, or vision left to create real solutions. A NeW VIeW OF AccOuNTABILITY The long-term benefits of accountability have enormous implications for the quality of our lives and of our education system. There is a direct correlation between any organization’s health and the degree of accountability displayed by its employees, top to bottom. Accountability is an attitude, a personal, private, and nonnegotiable choice about how to live one’s life. It’s a desire to take responsibility for results, and for that reason, it cannot be mandated. It requires a personal bias toward solutions, toward action. Rather than hold people accountable, hold them “able.” Rather than equate the word accountability with culpability, begin with yourself and model the kind of accountability that is empowering. Accountability has to come from within. Model it and show people how accountability benefits them. When it’s clear how accountability benefits someone, accountability becomes an internal drive. While we don’t always have a choice about the situation in which we find ourselves, we do have a choice about how we view or judge it. Mini-Lecture for week 5 Course Outline--Week 5 BECOMING AN EFFECTIVE AND CARING VOLUNTEER--Continued from week 4 Mini-Lecture: Welcome to Week 5. It is useful to use a social systems framework for understanding our community. When we do this we view a community as a social system composed of a number of subsystems (for example, neighborhoods or businesses or agencies existing in the same physical space and that are all linked together by some common goals). We can also look at a community as a subsystem of the state in which it is located. In addition, human beings are individual (not social) systems in their own right, but are also subsystems of their communities. We know from our experience that a community can further the growth and development of an individual or family, or it can limit or even destroy that subsystem’s progress. Consequently, it is important to understand that our community has had a rather profound effect on our personal development. So this week we also look at what influences have shaped our lives and helped us develop into the person we are today. A reflective look at ourselves is an assignment of significant importance. It is understandable that people want to change some things about or in their community and can be referred to as "change agents". That term is a little impersonal for me. It's a pretty stiff and stoic term for what we may feel strongly on an emotional level. I want something more warm and fuzzy—like “the make a difference” person so I would like to "change" the term to "make a difference person". In reality our volunteer work is an attempt to change something. Either making someone's life, or some piece of their life, or the life experience in our community better--to MAKE A DIFFERENCE. So volunteers (and others) become change agents. We may also endeavor to change entire community views on a particular topic or concern or we may want to change a condition or situation that exists in our community. So we begin the process. In some situations we can do it by direct contact--person to person. In some other situations (like broad community change) we have to have helpers and so we form coalitions with others who wish to see the same changes occur so that we can impact conditions that require multi-level or higher level change. As “make a difference persons” we continually shift back and forth between attention to individuals, subsystems, and to the larger system (community or state, etc) of which they are a part. This ability to look at multi-levels sequentially and/or simultaneously is a hallmark of community change efforts. This becomes a pretty sophisticated process but one that we should not back away from because we may not know what to do right now to change things. Marquetta’s post: There are different aspects and things that make up a culture. A group's traditions, holidays, morals, and beliefs can make up a person’s culture. The world is made up of different cultures, which plays a vital role in understanding the individual situation and guiding the social worker on how to interact with the individual. Culture can be defined as how a person can view the world based on their interactions with the world and their environment. There are different aspects of culture, such as religion, ethnicity, and region (Alvarez-Hernandez & Choi, 2017). Although I am an African American, I consider my culture Southern African American. My experiences of being raised in the south as an African American can differ from another African American woman in a different part of the world. Even within the realm of being a southern African American woman, being raised by my family makes my experience and culture different from someone raised a few miles from me. Within my family culture, religion, relationships, and a sense of community are vital aspects of our culture. These individual aspects together help form my culture and are why I view the world a certain way and analyze things within the world. My first memory of cultural differences was the celebration of Halloween. For instance, it was customary not to trick-o-treat or go out during Halloween. When permitted, we would have church lock-ins where we played games, roasted hotdogs, slept in the church, and did things within the church. We were not permitted to dress up in scary costumes but did wear things like angel costumes or people from the Bible. This was a norm in my culture. I did not know anything different until starting school. I could hear other children talking about trick or treating, which caused me to have questions. This interaction allowed me to see a cultural difference at a young age. My viewpoint and lens to which I saw the holiday and world were shaped by my upbringing, which is a part of my culture and not just individual differences. According to the NASW Code of ethics 1.05, A social worker should work to understand a family’s culture regarding their diversity and unjust treatment. The social worker should work to understand their “race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, marital status, political belief, religion, immigration status, and mental or physical ability (National Association of Social Workers, 2021)”. A social worker who does not understand a person or family culture risks being biased or showing racism inadvertently (TED, 2017). 2. There are many considerations for our thinking when it comes to figuring out what we mean by a thriving community, and it is not a concept that should be narrowly defined or static. When we search our thoughts on such an important concept, it is one that will always be one in transition and co-created. Activity sheet: Use the questions as a background for an open-ended discussion. Can we be happier, healthier, and more supported in a community that is more aimed at collective well-being and more sustainable? How much are we affected by our communities? How much does our well-being affect our communities? Do we thrive more when our community thrives more? Does our community thrive more when we thrive more? You’ve seen this before, but take another look at Jessica Perlstein’s artwork of a reinvisioned San Francisco cityscape. Activity sheet: Make a list of words that fit under the category of “well-being” and another list under the category of “sustainability.” Then, choose some of the words, and create sentences that include at least one word from each column and focus on how they impact each other. Look at the list of top 20 countries that are in the United Nations Happiness Index and the top 20 countries in the Environmental Performance Index. Activity sheet: Put the rankings of each country on both lists. Answer the questions that follow. Look at patterns, and provide your initial thoughts about them. We tend to keep issues of well-being and sustainability separate when we talk about them as if they do not affect each other. There is, however, a reason to think otherwise. The top countries that are generally rated the highest on the United Nations Happiness Index (full report here) are often the same countries on the Environmental Performance Index (full report here, list of countries here).
