There are many considerations for our thinking when it comes to figuring out what we
mean by a thriving community, and it is not a concept that should be narrowly
defined or static. When we search our thoughts on such an important concept, it is
one that will always be one in transition and co-created.
Activity sheet: Use the questions as a background for an open-ended discussion.
Can we be happier, healthier, and more supported in a community that is more
aimed at collective well-being and more sustainable? How much are we affected by
our communities? How much does our well-being affect our communities? Do we
thrive more when our community thrives more? Does our community thrive more
when we thrive more?
You’ve seen this before, but take another look at Jessica Perlstein’s artwork of a
reinvisioned San Francisco cityscape.
Activity sheet: Make a list of words that fit under the category of “well-being” and
another list under the category of “sustainability.” Then, choose some of the words,
and create sentences that include at least one word from each column and focus on
how they impact each other.
Look at the list of top 20 countries that are in the United Nations Happiness Index
and the top 20 countries in the Environmental Performance Index.
Activity sheet: Put the rankings of each country on both lists. Answer the questions
that follow.
Look at patterns, and provide your initial thoughts about them.
Activity sheet: Answer questions and discuss your thoughts about patterns.
We tend to keep issues of well-being and sustainability separate when we talk about
them as if they do not affect each other. There is, however, a reason to think
otherwise. The top countries that are generally rated the highest on the United
Nations Happiness Index (full report here) are often the same countries on the
Environmental Performance Index (full report here, list of countries here). Students
will look at the two lists and analyze how similar they are. Briefly, (video here) living
sustainably can make us feel happier. It’s tied to our identities and localities.
