OPENING DOORS - Scientific Workshops for Young Researchers
An initiative aimed at promoting links between young scientists from the UK and Spain
WORKSHOP on “The ecology of inland waters: Concepts, connections, climate, conservation and
communication.”
Estación Biológica de Doñana (Huelva, Spain), 13-17 October 2013
The British Council (BC) in Spain in collaboration with the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) is
organising a series of scientific workshops to provide opportunities for researchers from the UK and Spain to
meet face-to-face for the exchange of ideas, knowledge and information on priority topics and to explore
future areas of research and collaboration.
The workshop will consist of 10 keynote presentations of 30min each (5 from Spanish researchers and 5
from British researchers) and 15min presentations from the rest of the participants, early to mid career
researchers (10 from the UK and 10 from Spain) to be selected from those applying. The language for all
presentations will be English.
Keynote speakers:
Prof. Brian Moss (University of Liverpool) Freshwater research: key and global or going nowhere?
Prof. Andy Green (Estación Biológica de Doñana) Freshwater birds as major players on the aquatic stage
Dr. Jonathan Grey (Queen Mary London) Connectivity: cornucopia or curse for inland waters?
Dr. Isabel Reche (Universidad de Granada) Inland waters as a model system to study microbial
metacommunities
Prof. Stephen Maberly (Centre for Ecology and Hydrology) Climate change effects on the functioning of
inland waters: pervasive influence or minor factor?
Prof. Jordi Catalan (CREAF) Predictability requires understanding: some paradoxes on persistent organic
pollutants and aquatic organisms
Dr. Nigel Willby (University of Stirling) What can landscape-scale approaches teach us about the
conservation and restoration of freshwaters?
Dr. Nuria Bonada (Universidad de Barcelona) Biological traits, evolutionary history, and community
assembly of freshwater biodiversity
Dr. Isabelle Durance (Cardiff University) Freshwater ecosystem services: a new way of communicating the
importance of freshwaters and freshwater biodiversity
Dr. Emili García-Berthou (Universidad de Girona) Invasion biology and inland waters: from conservation to
communication
The workshop is limited to a total of about 30 participants to be selected from those applying. The organisers
of this scientific workshop will cover all participants’ travel and full board accommodation costs.
Early to mid career researchers (less than 10 years post-PhD experience) wishing to participate should send
their CV and the attached application form to belen.fortea@britishcouncil.es before 15
th
June 2013.
