Chosen Channel For Our Documentary BBC Three:
When discussing certain channels that would be appropriate to broadcast our documentary we
came to the conclusion that a suitable channel for our documentary would be BBC three. We
came to this conclusion as our research shows that BBC Three does broadcast documentaries and
from their documentary rating it clear they have a target audience who enjoy and watch
documentaries regularly when broadcast on BBC Three.
Furthermore, additional evidence to show that BBC Three is the most appropriate channel to
broadcast our documentary is because a large majority of BBC Three’s documentaries share the same
theme which we aim our documentary aims to contain. This is focusing on social problems and how it
affects young people. As mentioned, this too is our intention as we wish to produce a documentary
emphasising the problems the recession is causing young people in our society.
As a result it is clear that the mainstream of BBC Three’s documentaries share the same theme as our
documentary. Therefore, we feel that our target audience would be most likely to watch our
documentary if broadcasted on BBC Three.
In addition, from researching BBC Three’s target audience when revolving documentaries it became
clear that BBC Three share the same target audience that we aim to target. BBC Three’s target
audience for documentaries is an age rate between 18-25 appealing to both male and females with a
social class ranging for group B,C1, C2 and D, BBC Three target audience also share the same
lifestyle of our target audience. As a result, it is clear that we have a very similar target audience that
BBC Three targets when they broadcast documentaries therefore, it is clear that to appeal to our target
audience we must choose the channel that they are most likely to watch documentaries on
and from this information and the previous evidence stated earlier it is clear that it is BBC Three
Moreover, another reason why we chose BBC Three as the most significant channel to broadcast
our documentary is because our research shows that BBC Three only begins to broadcast their
channels at 7pm which has positive implications for our documentary. Firstly, By BBC Three
broadcasting their documentary at a later viewing time it demonstrates they are attempting segment
the public to a more mature audience who would have an interest and understand that topic. This
crucial for our documentary as we need to broadcast our documentary at similar time to ensure the
documentary is being viewed by audience who are able to understand the content being shown. As
a result it is clear that BBC Three documentaries along with our own are targeting a mature
audience who are able to understand and personally relate to the topic and therefore for this reason
we feel it is the most suitable channel to select to broadcast our documentary.
Furthermore an additional reason why BBC Three 7pm broadcasting time makes it a suitable
channel to broadcast our documentary is because 7pm t is the beginning of the “primetime”
viewing hours. Primetime is when the most popular programmes are screened and as a result, by
having our documentary broadcasted at 7pm this would allow us to be within the prime time
viewing hours and therefore we would be able to target a large percentage of our target audience
and achieve the highest possible ratings.
Finally, An additional reason we BBC Three is the most suitable channel to broadcast our
documentary is because when our documentary was completed by 20 individuals who reflected our
target audience the results showed that our target audience believed BBC Three was the most
preferable and popular channel. Therefore, it is clear our target audience favourite channel is BBC
Three and this makes it evident to us that the most suitable channel to broadcast our documentary is
BBC Three
