Step 1: Application via online application form
kanthari will get a clear understanding of you, your project and vision for social change.
Step 2: Initial interview
In which the intake team will interview you over Skype to get a feel for your passion and clarity in
regards to your chosen project. They will also answer any questions you may have about the program
and application process.
Step 3: Write up of an Essay
In which you write about your history, your challenges, how you have dealt with these, and about your
vision for social change.
Step 4: Follow up Interview:
This Skype interview will be conducted by an independent expert to determine your suitability for this
very intense course by building a personality profile.
Step 5: Final interview
This Skype interview will be done with the management of kanthari before a final selection decision is
made.

Senior Policy and Advocacy Advisor, Saferworld, London
Saferworld is an independent non-governmental organisation that works to prevent violent conflict
and build safer lives. We work with civil society, governments and international organisations to
encourage and support effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy
development, and through supporting the actions of others. The Senior Policy and Advocacy Advisor
will help advance Saferworld’s work on

Operations Manager, South Sudan, Carter Center
Work with the South Sudan Guinea Worm Eradication Program (SSGWEP) Director, with The
Carter Center Country Representative (CR), and Deputy Country Representative(DCR) under direct
supervision by the Senior Operations Manager (SOM) to South Sudan, as well as with Ministry of
Health (MOH) authorities to supervise and monitor the financial, transportation, procurement, and
operational management of The Carter Center-supported programs by
providing direct, day-to-day management and oversight of the
aforementioned areas. Operations Managers are independent
contractors and as such are offered short term contracts up to 180
days (6 months). A contractor may be offered multiple successive
contracts over time. The contract provides a daily honorarium
commensurate with experience and education. The daily honorarium
can vary, however, the starting rate per day is usually $150.00 based

OTI Country Representative – Niger
OTI’s Niger program seeks to further U.S. foreign policy
objectives in Niger through support that targets drivers of
instability in Niger and the region. Drivers may include, but are
not limited to, political and economic exclusion, particularly
among youth and marginalized groups, reintegration of returned
workers and ex-combatants, the presence of extremist
organizations, lack of state presence and/or good governance
coupled with a lack of opportunities for political participation.
OTI intends to address these critical issues through a flexible,
small-grants mechanism that tailors approaches to the varied
needs of communities in Niger. The program may utilize both
“soft” (e.g. cultural and recreational activities, media and strategic
communications) and “hard” (e.g. small-scale infrastructure)
activities to strengthen linkages between communities, local actors, and the Nigerien government and
to increase community cohesion. The program may also support national level activities, such as
elections in 2016 or other emerging transition needs.
The Country Representative – Niger is a member of the Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian
Assistance (DCHA)/OTI Africa Regional Team, and reports to the Washington-based OTI Regional
Team Leader or his/her designee. The Country Representative’s principle responsibility will be the
development, oversight and management of DCHA/OTI’s Niger program. The Country
Representative will be called upon to represent OTI’s mission and programs to senior-level
government officials, in-country visitors, senior officials from other international organizations,

Analysis of Labour Market Statistics Course
Labour statistics are an important element in the measurement of economic growth and development
and yet the data required to provide evidence-based decision making are scanty or non-existent. There
is an identified lack of expertise in data analysis of labour
market surveys as a major drawback in the production of
labour force statistics in many countries. As a result, the data
collected are not properly or fully analyzed, even sometimes
not analyzed at all. This is due to a variety of reasons related to
decisions and activities both before actual data collection and
subsequent to it.
This course aims at equipping participants with the necessary
knowledge of ensuring regular collection and dissemination of
basic labour statistics; improving the quality of labour market

statistics and their analysis; strengthening the management of labour market information and poverty
monitoring systems; and helping to disseminate key national labour statistics and methodological

Installation, Use and Management of OPENHDS and ODK Course
OpenHDS is an open source Android tablet application that enables
community field workers to collect births, deaths, migrations,
pregnancies, deliveries, immunization and other pertinent health
information. Field workers can collect data “offline” and upload data to
the OpenHDS server when they have mobile connectivity. Health
program administrators and policy makers can thus have real time access
to health and demographic information in the community. The web-enabled, tablet-based OpenHDS
application allows users to efficiently select previously registered individuals and launch various
OpenDataKit (ODK) forms to collect additional demographic, morbidity, and service delivery
information. The mobile application facilitates the collection, through household interviews, of many
health events that occur in the community (or outside the formal health system). Even with a relatively
small target population, accurate and statistically significant health and demographic rates can be
computed when health events are combined with ongoing population demographic information. In
addition to computing demographic data, health administrators and researchers are able to assess
health system utilization and the burden of disease for a given population over time. For more

Counselling Psychology Quarterly
Counselling Psychology Quarterly is an international interdisciplinary

profession. The journal welcomes submissions that reflect counselling psychology articles globally,

Translational Issues in Psychological Science
This new APA journal, co-sponsored by APAGS, is looking for
reviewers and accepting submissions for the first issues.
Graduate students and early career psychologists are especially
invited to participate. Translational Issues in Psychological
Science (TPS, 2015), edited by Mary Beth Kenkel, PhD, of Florida
Institute of Technology, is a unique mentoring journal that
involves psychologists in training in all stages of the peer-review
process. Students and early career psychologists will co-author
the articles, serve as reviewers and have the chance to serve as an
associate editor for one issue.
The first volume will feature issues on the science of sleep, how
psychological science can improve our classrooms, psychological and neuroscientific advances in
obesity, and current perspectives in prejudice and discrimination. To sign up to review, psychologists
in training should be enrolled in a doctoral program or serving as a postdoctoral scholar, be a member
of APA or APAGS, and have experience with peer-reviewed journals (e.g. as a reviewer, or someone
who has received a decision on a manuscript submitted to a peer-reviewed journal). To start the

Health Volunteers Overseas: Mental Health Program in Bhutan
Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the availability
and quality of health care in developing countries through the training and education of local health
care providers. HVO is currently recruiting volunteers for its Mental Health program in Thimphu,
Bhutan. This program seeks to facilitate the training of mental health students to become remote
village-based providers of mental health assessment, support and
medication treatment and triage of critical cases to the National
Referral Hospital. Volunteers also work to strengthen existing
Bhutanese Mental Health services through daily clinical service,
staff training, consultation and support services. Additionally,
volunteers assist in developing the mental health curriculum for
staff and students, as well as educational material for patients and
families that integrate western mental health and indigenous
Bhutanese cultural values and techniques. Volunteers must be
licensed to practice psychiatry, psychology, psychotherapy or
clinical social work in the United States, Australia or the United

Style Over Substance
The head of UN Women Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka blasted funding cuts as violence against
women in conflict zones grows “worse than anything we’ve ever seen before.”
Campaigners highlighted remarkable failures of the UK’s Angeline Jolie-fronted, 13-country
violence prevention initiative, whose lagging response to the Rohingya crisis has prompted “a lot
of questions” about its efficacy, says Human Rights Watch’s Hillary Margolis.
Marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Mlambo-
Ngcuka called for action against gender-based violence that has become “normalized so it is
hardly noticeable.”
UN Women’s budget shrunk 5% from 2013-2016, with just 2% of money for conflict settings
earmarked for improving women’s rights.

Deadly Devices
Excessive screen time is linked to shocking spikes in depression and suicide in teen girls—but
limiting it to 2 hours a day poses no mental health risks, according to an analysis combining US
CDC data and 2 surveys of American teens’ thoughts.
The study, published this month in Clinical Psychological Science, found that between 2010-
2015—as smartphones became ubiquitous—suicide among 13-18 year old girls jumped 65%;
severe depression increased 58%.
Nearly half of teens who engaged in 5-plus hours of daily screen time were depressed and
entertained suicidal thoughts—compared to 28% of who clocked less than an hour a day on a

1 in 10 in Indonesia’s North Kayong province live on less than $1 a day, and scores pay for
scarce medical care through illegal logging in the Gunung Palung National Park.
Tackling the problem for over a decade, non-profit Alam Sehat Lestari (ASRI) blends
“healthcare, finances and conservation,” writes Yao-Hua Law.
Ex-loggers get 70% off medical care. Chainsaws are exchanged “for farms, fish ponds and cafés.”
Patients pay with native seedlings, which are used re-plant forests.
But the long-term efficacy ASRI’s reforestation program will depend on whether locals “have a
vested interest in keeping forests as forests,” says the Nature Conservancy’s Bronson Griscom.

Curbing Avoidable Tragedies
From a moment of silence at a crash-prone site in Accra to a flash mob in Fortaleza, Brazil, cities
around the world marked a Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims yesterday.
More than 1.25 million people die in traffic crashes annually— 90% in low- and middle-income
countries, according to the WHO. 2 years ago, governments across the world set an ambitious
goal to slash road traffic deaths and injuries by 50% by 2020, explained Etienne Krug, chair of
the UN Road Safety Collaboration, in a YouTube address.
Vital Strategies and other partners supported by the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety
helped organize the awareness-raising efforts in 9 key cities yesterday.
Mixed Bag at UN Talks
The UN climate confab that ended this weekend saw progress on carbon cuts and the role of
women and indigenous populations, but left financing holes for developing countries.
Wealthy nations have promised $100 billion a year by 2020 to help poor countries fight climate
change—but offered no real plan to deploy it.
Harjeet Singh of ActionAid International warned that while "vulnerable communities were in
the spotlight” at the talks, it “hasn't translated into the support that they need.”
Latin America must shift from “more oil and gas” to a “Let's take the Paris Agreement seriously,”
mindset, said Nivela’s Monica Araya.

Alzheimer’s
To Know or Not to Know? That is the Question
It’s becoming ever-easier to predict Alzheimer’s disease, thanks to new blood tests and a $100
million cash injection from Bill Gates.
The new tests to detect “pre-Alzheimer’s” plaque build-up in the brain will surely replace PET
scans and expensive spinal taps. They come as studies show Alzheimer’s may be preventable after
all, linked to a range of factors from a sedentary lifestyle to pollution.
The information is hard to stomach, but thousands carrying the gene variant ApoE4 have built
an online community to share information. If this army of patients “discuss their symptoms and
participate in research, science benefits.”

A Disjointed Approach
350 million people worldwide suffer from arthritis. In developing countries, weak health systems
and safety nets take its toll beyond the physical: lowering productivity and GDP, and
exacerbating poverty.
In developing countries, years lost to disability traced to osteoarthritis rose 75% from 1990-2013.
Groups like Operation Walk offer free hip and knee surgeries worldwide, but can’t meet
demand.
NCDs should be added to the UN Development Goals, and health funds convinced that
treating them improves “longevity, quality of life, and global GDP,” writes Carolyn Miller.

Chemical Scientists Find Their Publisher Toxic
In an unusual move, the editorial board of a small academic journal called for disciplinary action
against its publisher for prioritizing “corporate interests over independent science in the public
interest.”
Taylor & Francis Group acquired the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental
Health, known for calling out industry-commissioned studies defending their products’ safety, in
2015. The new owner ousted its editor and withdrew a paper critiquing industry-funded research
that staged worker exposure data for litigation purposes.
In protest, IJOEH’s editorial board asked the National Library of Medicine to discipline Taylor
& Francis Group, and requested the journal be rescinded from the influential Medline index.

Patent Unpending?
India should overturn its August decision to grant Pfizer a patent on its pneumonia vaccine
Prevnar13 (PCV13), Médecins Sans Frontières is arguing in a Delhi court today.
The patent blocks India’s vaccine manufacturers from developing and marketing PCV13 until
2026, and the lives of countless children hang in the balance. “The decision to give Pfizer a
patent in India for this vaccine is unmerited and just a way for them to remain the only game in
town by blocking more affordable pneumonia vaccines,” said Kate Elder of MSF’s Access
Campaign.
MSF says high prices are the main reason pneumonia vaccines haven’t been introduced in
standard vaccination packages for about a third of countries.

Death on 2 Wheels
Canadian researchers hope that their alarming findings on motorcycle injuries will spur
policymakers and manufacturers to embrace tighter safety measures.
Tracking motorcycle and car crashes in Ontario, Canada from 2007-2013, researchers found
motorcycle injuries 3 times more common. They are also more severe—resulting in more
hospitalizations and ICU visits—more deadly, and more expensive, according to the study
published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
The mean cost of automobile injuries was $2,995, compared to $5,825 for motorcycle injuries,
and that’s likely a low estimate. The researchers only tracked injuries for 30 days—full
rehabilitation often spans well beyond that timeframe.

Data by the People, for the People?
The Human Genome project carved out a new frontier of democratized data, bringing with it a
legion of ethical questions.
In The Postgenomic Condition, Jenny Reardon tracks genomics’s evolution to “a more
participatory and diverse venture,” writes Rosario Isasi. In the process DNA data—an important
resource—has fallen foul to what Reardon calls “the corporate corruption of science.”
Reardon uses “worst-case scenarios to demonstrate the complexities of human genomics.” But
she focuses more on political theory than practical suggestions, Isasi writes—in so doing, she

ignores key medical advances of genomics, like gene and cancer therapies—a “major
shortcoming.”

Malaria
Stopping Resistance at its Source
The race is on to stop a drug-resistant malaria strain in Southeast Asia—where malaria deaths are
rare—from reaching sub-Saharan Africa, where malaria kills 3,000 children daily.
Falciparum malaria, resistant to mainstay drugs artemisinin and piperaquine, has cropped up in
Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and now Vietnam. Considered on track to meet the WHO goal of
eliminating falciparum malaria in Southeast Asia by 2030, Vietnam's success is not a given—and
Kidong Park, the WHO’s representative in Vietnam, said “If we fail here, it will spread to other
parts of the world.”
Some researchers want the WHO to declare a global emergency. “Why are people so reluctant to
call it that?” asks Lorenz von Seidlein, a researcher in Thailand, warning against “false
confidence” that the right drugs will appear before catastrophe unfolds.

Infectious Diseases
Controlling Cholera in Somaliland
Coordinated responses, local volunteers, and swift action helped curb a major cholera outbreak
in Somaliland.
In 2016, cholera cases emerged across the drought-weary, self-declared state. After a rapid
assessment, the Somali Red Crescent Society positioned emergency response units and launched
a multi-faceted prevention education campaign. Trained local volunteers ran oral rehydration
units where they could refer severe cases to treatment and collect data for daily SMS reports. The
Somaliland government coordinated with the UN and local NGOs to share information and
remove bureaucratic roadblocks.
The robust response was successful in treating over 12,000 cholera cases and could be a helpful
case study for other outbreaks.

Mexico’s Embattled Community Police
Mexico’s bungled war on organized crime has killed 150,000—and a legion of community police
fighting corrupt officials and cartels alike have found themselves in the crosshairs.
Growing 50-70% of poppies in Mexico—the world’s third largest opium producer—Guerrero state
is a battleground for control of opium stocks that help fuel the heroin crisis. Community police
patrol 54 of the state’s 81 municipalities—but despite being protected by law, volunteer officers
have been arrested for crimes like robbery and kidnapping, shrinking their strength.
“The government is trying to stop our work,” said Nestora Salgado, a community policing leader
in Guerrero. “But we have to continue.”

India Befriends the Condom
Online condom distribution aims to curb contraception’s steep decline in India, linked to social
stigma around purchasing birth control in public. India is likely to surpass China’s 1.37 billion
population in 6 years.
With almost 1 million condoms ordered so far, the scheme is showing promise. But making
contraception socially acceptable is a more stubborn problem. India has under 6% condom
usage compared to Europe’s 30%. Oral contraceptives and vasectomies are down over the past 8
years.
Health ministers need “new strategies to convince people of the effectiveness and benefits of
condoms," said social scientist Probal Dasgupta.

Thailand’s Left-Behind Children
UBON RATCHATHANI—Children like Tat and Tew are known as “left-behind” children—their
parents felt forced to migrate to cities for jobs, leaving them to be raised by grandparents.
An estimated one-fifth of all Thai children (approximately 3 million in total) share their plight.
These children are significantly more likely to show developmental delays, learning and behavior
problems, to be malnourished, and to suffer the effects of physical violence.
Governments and NGOs are developing interventions to help left-behind children cope—but
parents need economic support and child development education early on, before they
contemplate leaving, according to UNICEF’s Chris Hirabayashi.

Tobacco
Too Little, Too Late?
After 18 years, a Big Tobacco lawsuit filed under President Bill Clinton materialized with TV
spots advertising the lethal and addictive effects of smoking.
Years of court appeals initially gummed up the 1999 ruling. In 2006, a federal judge upheld that
Big Tobacco had “lied, misrepresented, and deceived the American public,” and demanded
funding for the ads. The spots were released yesterday with content aimed at teens, even though
under-25s now comprise only 5% of network TV viewership. Teens primarily consume content
from social networking or online streaming sites.
Philip Morris USA owner Altria Group, which spends over $8 billion annually on marketing,
will fund the estimated $30 million campaign.

Indonesia Keeps Tobacco on Top
The sheer power of Indonesia’s tobacco industry has revealed itself once again through
prohibitive new restrictions on e-cigarettes. Trade minister Enggartiasto Lukita suggested
Indonesians can skirt the new rules if they “become regular smokers.”
Indonesia, known for executing non-violent drug offenders, is the sole Asia-Pacific country not
to sign the WHO’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. Tobacco-linked illnesses kill
200,000 each year in Indonesia, where over 5 million children smoke.

“Change the World”
It always struck me that saying that sounded a lot like grandiose hubris, or at best, a dauntingly
overwhelming task. The utter impossibility of it seemed certain until I realized that it can mean
helping one person at a time. That is a theme you’ll see throughout this book and our websites
and our work. I have added some of my LinkedIn Influencer blogs/essays that I hope may be
inspirational, also. The format of this book is inspired by Brian Eno’s A Year with Swollen
Appendices, not so much the diary aspect but rather the overwhelmingly large collection of
information in the various appendices.
Open-Sourced Humanitarian Interventionism
It’s long been my goal to make life easier for those working in humanitarian and volunteer
endeavors, as well as those in need of help. Indeed, in one way or another, we all need help in
one form or another. So, just about everything you find herein and on the Center’s website, is
free of charge, and a lot you could also find for yourself. What I’ve tried to do is speed up the
search, vet what has been found, and then curate the results, making them as readily and easily
available as I know how to. This is my dream of open-sourcing humanitarian work.
Current Content, For Pretty Close To Forever
The reason for this “reverse engineering” is twofold. First, the amount of content and links on
the Center’s website may not always be apparent to the novel user. This book allows for near
complete exposure to the functional tools and content that await the online user. Second, this
