HRM Issues/Diversification Strategies
Nucor Corporation started its operation in the 50s. It is known for producing
electronic equipment and nuclear energy instruments and they are one of the most
popular companies when it comes to the product they market especially with steel.
If they need to, the company can go ahead and produce 26 million tons of steel in a
single production and they also do recycling of their products hence they dont rely
on steel production alone. They recycle everything including the waste they are
producing during steel production. They also get supply outside the company for

3. their recycling efforts making them one of the top recycler companies in the world
too.
1960 saw the development and growth of electronically run companies producing
steel through electric arc furnace hence more business people entered the steel
production business. This equipment is called mini-mills and can produce steel at a
limited number but if combined together, it can create an integrated mill that can be
used for maximum production operation. If companies will be using this strategy,
then the cost of producing steel will become lower and the production can be
maximized (Thompson, Strickland, & Gamble, 2010).
Nucor Corporation continued to use the process it has been using for steel
production until 1980 when thin-slab casting was introduced and adapted by the
company for its operation. The electric arc furnace in their mini-mills was still used
by other companies although it is already considered an obsolete method back
then because the thin-slab casting became the new process. Well the usage of the
electric arc furnace in their mini-mills was due to the fact that there are some types
