Contractures are a chronic loss of joint motion caused by structural changes in non-bony tissues like muscles, ligaments, and tendons. They can occur in any joint and be caused by immobilization, nerve injury, muscle/tendon disease, deformity, injury, or chronic inflammation. Certain disorders that affect nerves and muscles often lead to contractures like muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy.
