Expand campus horchata business with food truck
1.
2. WHY WE ARE DOING THIS
• There isn’t a place to buy horchata on campus.
Example Problems
• On campus, the choices are mostly limited to coffee and Jamba Juice,
with our introduction to horchata, we can tap into the consumer market
that is free and available.
• There’s people out there who don’t want a caffeinated drink, or who
don’t want a coffee to drink, but still want something refreshing.
3. HOW DID THIS START?
Early September my friend Rachel asked me to bring horchata to a BBQ.
After, I needed extra cash to pay for my room and school supplies. The
leftover ingredients were used to make a basic batch where I quickly
sold and revamped for the consumers.
Our first day selling.
We worked together
to sell Rachel’s
speakers and my
horchata. We sold
out within two hours
4. VALIDATION
• The problem is that there is a market out there for the drink horchata.
• There’s no other competitor selling horchata, unless we count the coffee
shops around campus. Those won’t be real competitors until later, when
we establish a foothold and diversify our product.
• The problem is worth fixing because I have already started on it. There’s
no one else selling horchata on campus, which gives us the market to
sell too. Eventually we will expand our company into chai’s, coffees, and
muffins and we will have to compete with the coffee shops, but by that
time we will have a steady income, recognition, and a better connection
with the students, being started from a student in the dorms.
5. TARGET AUDIENCE
Located in the University of Utah, most of our consumers are students
attending the university. With the introduction of the espresso horchata,
we focus on those who drink coffee to get themselves through the day.
Once finals week and other major intense periods of study occur, many
students will reach out to caffeinated beverages to get themselves
throughout the day. Espresso horchata can be there for them.
So is there a market?
There is a growing amount of people who are coming and interested in the
stand. Currently the business is spreading by word of mouth. I created
a facebook page to help inform people when and where we will be
selling.
6. MILESTONES
Milestone 1) If I raise 5,000 from funding, I would be able to buy a used ice cream
van or another stand to sell the beverages out of. I would have a set location,
along with higher awareness on campus.
• With the logo on the side of the stand, we would be advertising to the
consumers with higher efficiency and effectiveness.
• The look of an actual location to sell the product would raise the legitimacy
of the business.
Milestone 2) to add more flavors, variations, and other products to the
consumers (cupcakes, coffee, and chai)
The increase of choices would add our consumer diversity.
Milestone 3) to branch out and sell not only to the University of Utah, but also to
Westminster, BYU, and local parks and events
7. POSSIBLE GROWTH
The horchata would be a staple of the stand. With my espresso machine, I
can add espresso to the drink, making espresso horchata. The results
are delicious and an alternative to coffee on campus. Eventually we will
add chai, dirty chai lattes, and different coffees to the menu. The growth
of our company would be to reach a coffee shop or stand level of
business.
My cousin Tamera Begay is co-manager of Sweet Arleen’s, a bakery located
in Draper. They are a fresh company located in Draper, and bought the
rights to sell their products in the state. They sell award winning
cupcakes and are eventually looking to expand more into the Valley. If
we can work out a way for me to sell their cupcakes in my growing
business, it would greatly benefit both parties.
8. FROM 20 CUPS TO 2000 CUPS.
• Send out flyers throughout the campus, and through friends and people
we know.
• Spread the word through the facebook page
• Have a short radio advertisement or questionnaire through the local
radio
• Create videos on youtube
Once we establish a solid small income, we can expand through having a
truck and solid time we are open. If we are able to achieve a vehicle to sell
out out of, we can gain recognition as a real business.
9. WHERE YOU CAN HELP OUT!
• So we have a foothold on campus. We are selling the product, and are
making a profit. If we can receive your funding, we can really set
ourselves up for not only further advancement, but a stable business.
• With $5,000 I would be able to purchase a basic ice cream vehicle and
remodel it into a vehicle where I can sell horchata. Not only that, but I
would gain a more prominent setting against any competitors.
• Any and all leftover money would be used to upgrade our supplies
necessary to create batches that would sustain our growing business.
• The market is there, and I already created the business, I just need a
little help to fasten the move from a small table to an actual business.
