1. NOW PRESENT
We use Now Present
to express the idea
that something is
happening at the
same moment we
are speaking.

2. CHARACTERISTICS
1. This tense has two other names:
Present Continuous and Present
Progressive.
2. Its main form verb is made by
verb to be + verbing.
*Verb to be = is – am – are.

3. 3. ­Ing means in Spanish ­ando or
­endo.
If the infinitive verb ends with a
final ­e, you have to take it out
and add it ­ing.
DRIVE (Drive – e) + ING =
Driv + ING =
Driving

4. 4. If the infinitive verb is shorter,
we have to duplicate the last
consonant and add ­ING.
CUT (Cut +t) + ING =
Cutt + ING =
Cutting
* This only happens when the verb
has a consonant – vowel ­
consonant.

5. 5. Finally, we have to add a final
­ING to the missing infinitive verbs.
EAT Eat + ING = Eating.
STUDY Study + ING = Studying.
*The verb eat has a consonant – vowel –
vowel, and every verb that ends with a
final ­y has to e added ­ING.

6. USES
Use 1: NOW
Use the Now Present with normal
verbs
to express the idea that something is
happening now, at this very moment.
It
can also be used to show that
something is not happening now.

7. Use 2 : Longer actions progress now
In English, “now” can mean: this
second, today, this month, this year,
and so on. Sometimes, we use this
tense to say that we are in process
of doing a longer action which is in
progress; however, we might not be
doing it at this exact second.
I'm not studying to become a dentist.

8. Use 3 : Near future
Sometimes, the speakers use the Now
present to indicate that something will
or will not happen in the near future.
I am meeting some friends after work.

9. Use 4: Repetition and irritation with
“Always”
The Now present with words such as
“Always” or “Constantly” expresses
the idea that something irritating or
shocking often happens.
She is always coming to class late.

10. Notice that the
meaning is like
Simple Present,
but with negative
emotions.
Remember to put
the words “Always”
or “Constantly”
between the verb to
be and verbing.
