Who is Coming? Lesson Plan and Example Book By: Maria Athena Kostas
Little Monkey lives in Africa.
Run, Little Monkey, run! Who is coming?
Run Little Monkey, run! Crocodile is coming. Run! Little Monkey ran up!
Run, Little Monkey, run! Who is coming? Snake is coming. Run! Little Monkey ran down.
Run, Little Monkey, run! Who is coming? Lion is coming. Run! Run, Little Monkey, run! Who is coming?
Hippopotamus is coming. Run! Little Monkey ran out. Run Little Monkey, run! Who is coming?
Tiger is coming. Run! Little Monkey did not run. Why? There are no tigers in Africa.
Who is Coming? Lesson Plan Concept: Pattern Book Pre-Reading: To introduce the story I would present the book to my students, discussing what they see in the cover of Who is Coming? We will have a whole group discussion. Then I will read the title of the book, followed by a picture walk but to be careful not to spoil the ending. I would tell my students to make educated guesses on what they think will happen in the story by the few pictures they saw during the book walk. Reading: I will begin to read the book, following along with my finger to show left to right reading for my students. By the end of the reading my students should have already grasped the concept of the pattern, “Who is coming?” Next, I would read the book again, and students should by then be reading along with me. Post-Reading: After we have read the story twice, I will ask for volunteers to discuss with the class what they recall happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story. As a closing activity, the students will go back to their seats and with blank paper with four boxes on each sheet, students will be able to create their own pattern book with their chosen animal. They will begin by writing, “Little (ANIMAL) lives in Africa. Run, Little (ANIMAL), run! Who is coming?” then continuing the rest of their stories. Students will be able to be creative and use their artistic abilities to make colorful and fun stories of their own. After students have completed this activity, the teacher will combine all the stories into a class book where every child gets a chance to be an author. Other classes are able to view this book as well, being it will be available in our classroom library. This will be a practice for understanding patterns.
