• Between chapter 2 and 3 is a 30 year gap with
a lot of speculation and legends, and only a
few verses.
• Luke 2:42 And when He became twelve, they
went up there according to the custom of the
Feast;
7. The Gap
• Luke 2:47-52 And all who heard Him were amazed at
His understanding and His answers. 48 When they saw
Him, they were astonished; and His mother said to
Him, "Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold,
Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You."
49 And He said to them, "Why is it that you were
looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in
My Father's house?" 50 But they did not understand the
statement which He had made to them. 51 And He
went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He
continued in subjection to them; and His mother
treasured all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus
kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor
with God and men.

to by Isaiah the prophet when he said,
"THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE
WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF
THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'“

every mountain and hill be made low;

And the rugged terrain a broad valley; 5
Then the glory of the LORD will be
revealed, And all flesh will see it together;
For the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist;
and his food was locusts and wild honey.
• 2 Kings 1:8 They answered him, "He was a hairy
man with a leather girdle bound about his loins."
And he said, "It is Elijah the Tishbite.“

17. Matthew 3:4, Elijah Had A Diet Too
• 1 Kings 19:5 He lay down and slept under a juniper
tree; and behold, there was an angel touching him, and
he said to him, "Arise, eat." 6 Then he looked and
behold, there was at his head a bread cake baked on
hot stones, and a jar of water. So he ate and drank and
lay down again. 7 The angel of the LORD came again a
second time and touched him and said, "Arise, eat,
because the journey is too great for you." 8 So he arose
and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that
food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the
mountain of God. 9 Then he came there to a cave and
lodged there; and behold, the word of the LORD came
to him, and He said to him, "What are you doing here,
Elijah?"

• Locusts are “clean”
• Leviticus 11:22 'These of them you may eat:
the locust in its kinds, and the devastating

19. Matthew 3:4, John’s Diet, Locusts
• Easton’s Bible Dictionary… "The legs and thighs of
these insects are so powerful that they can leap to a
height of two hundred times the length of their bodies.
When so raised they spread their wings and fly so close
together as to appear like one compact moving mass."
Locusts are prepared as food in various ways.
Sometimes they are pounded, and then mixed with
flour and water, and baked into cakes; "sometimes
boiled, roasted, or stewed in butter, and then eaten."
They were eaten in a preserved state by the ancient
Assyrians. The devastations they make in Eastern lands
are often very appalling…
20. Matthew 3:4, John’s Diet, Locusts
• “…The invasions of locusts are the heaviest calamites
that can befall a country. "Their numbers exceed
computation: the Hebrews called them 'the countless,'
and the Arabs knew them as 'the darkeners of the sun.'
Unable to guide their own flight, though capable of
crossing large spaces, they are at the mercy of the
wind, which bears them as blind instruments of
Providence to the doomed region given over to them
for the time. Innumerable as the drops of water or the
sands of the seashore, their flight obscures the sun and
casts a thick shadow on the earth Ex 10:15 Jud 6:5

21. Matthew 3:4, John’s Monasticism?, wikipedia
• “…This verse played an important role in the
development of Christian monasticism with John the
Baptist viewed as a model ascetic. The sparse food and
uncomfortable clothing, including the wearing
of hairshirts became seen as the ideal of Christian
asceticism. John Calvin wholly rejected this
interpretation. He did not see this verse presenting
John the Baptist as an ideal, but rather presenting an
accurate portrait of one forced to live in the
wilderness. To Calvin John's holiness and popularity is
not because of his asceticism but despite of it. Today
most Protestants follow Calvin's view of this verse.[2]…”

22. Monasticism vs. Dangers Of Wealth
• One of the dangers of having a lot of money is
that you may be quite satisfied with the kinds of
happiness money can give and so fail to realize
your need for God. If everything seems to come
simply by signing checks, you may forget that you
are at every moment totally dependent on God.
C. S. Lewis
• Matthew 6:24 …You cannot serve God and
wealth.
• Matthew 13:22 …the deceitfulness of wealth
choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
23. Matthew 3:4, God Gave Jacob A Diet
• Deuteronomy 32:9 "For the LORD's portion is His people;
Jacob is the allotment of His inheritance. 10 "He found him in a
desert land, And in the howling waste of a wilderness; He
encircled him, He cared for him, He guarded him as the pupil
of His eye. 11 "Like an eagle that stirs up its nest, That hovers
over its young, He spread His wings and caught them, He
carried them on His pinions. 12 "The LORD alone guided him,
And there was no foreign god with him. 13 "He made him ride
on the high places of the earth, And he ate the produce of the
field; And He made him suck honey from the rock, And oil
from the flinty rock, 14 Curds of cows, and milk of the flock,
With fat of lambs, And rams, the breed of Bashan, and goats,
With the finest of the wheat-- And of the blood of grapes you
drank wine. 15 "But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked-- You are
grown fat, thick, and sleek-- Then he forsook God who made
him, And scorned the Rock of his salvation.

31. Matthew 3:6, Baptized By John
• Matthew 3:6…and they were being baptized…
• This is not Christian baptism. This baptism would
identify the one baptized with John the Baptist, and his
message of repentance, (1 Corinthians 10:2 and all
were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea).
Dr. Ryrie in his notes says "as one of the conditions of
becoming a proselyte to Judaism, the person had to
immerse himself in the water (also be circumcised if a
male and offer a sacrifice). To be baptized by John was
a striking aligning of oneself with his message. John
had no organization to join; those being baptize were
already Jews; and the church was not yet in existence.
So they were acknowledging the truth of his message
and siding with righteousness.”

• Matthew 3:6…and they were being baptized…
• This is not Christian baptism.
• The archaeological study Bible on page 1562

• Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the
Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he

you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 "Therefore

and do not suppose that you can say to
yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father'; for
I say to you, that God is able from these stones to
raise up children to Abraham. 10 "And the axe is
already laid at the root of the trees; every tree
therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut
down and thrown into the fire.

Stuff?
• Zephaniah 1:14 Near is the great day of the LORD, Near and
coming very quickly; Listen, the day of the LORD! In it the
warrior cries out bitterly. 15 A day of wrath is that day, A day
of trouble and distress, A day of destruction and desolation,
A day of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick
darkness, 16 A day of trumpet and battle cry Against the
fortified cities And the high corner towers. 17 I will bring
distress on men So that they will walk like the blind,
Because they have sinned against the LORD; And their
blood will be poured out like dust And their flesh like dung.
18 Neither their silver nor their gold Will be able to deliver
them On the day of the LORD'S wrath; And all the earth will
be devoured In the fire of His jealousy, For He will make a
complete end, Indeed a terrifying one, Of all the
inhabitants of the earth.

44. Matthew 4:12, Jesus Withdrew Into Galilee
• The Archaeological Study Bible says, “The northern
part of Naphtali was inhabited by a mixed race of Jews
and pagans (Judges 1:33). It's Israelite population had
been carried away captive to Assyria and had been
replaced by a colony of pagan immigrants (2 Kings
15:29; 17:24). Hence the region was called "Galilee of
the nations" and it's people called "Gentiles" (Isa 9:1;
Mat 4:, 15-16). During and after the captivity the
predominant mixture of Gentile races impoverished
the worship of Judaism, and for the same reason the
Galilean accent and dialect were noticeably peculiar
(26:73). This caused the southern Jews of "purer"
blood and orthodox tradition to despise the Galileans
(John 1:46, 7:52).”
