GENESIS CH. 10
GENESIS 10-11

 We are nearing the end of the 1st. section of
our 2 part division of the book of Genesis
(chapters 1-11). We are in the post-diluvian
age of the world. After chapter 11 starts the
second division (chapters 12-50), from the
deluge to the call of Abram..
ADAM CLARKE'S COMMENTARY

 Eusebius and others state (from what authority
we know not) that Noah was commanded of
God to make a will and bequeath the whole of
the earth to his three sons and their
  descendants in the following manner:
 To Shem, all the East;

 To Ham, all Africa;

 To Japheth, the Continent of Europe with its
isles, and the northern parts of Asia.
CH. 10, THE TABLE OF NATIONS

mankind to have sprung from a common stock.

anything, because he himself gives all men life and
breath and everything else. 26 From one man he
made every nation of men, that they should inhabit
the whole earth; and he determined the times set for
them and the exact places where they should live.

face, in spite of, against Yahweh. This also is
the view of Josephus and the Jewish

GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED

 Gen 10:25
 Two sons were born to Eber:

 One was named Peleg, because in his time
the earth was divided; his brother was
  named Joktan.
GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED
 Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown says, “The natural
view of these words implies a reference to a formal
division of the earth, which, as has been thought,
from several passages of Scripture (Deut 32:8; Acts
17:24-26), as well as from the probability of the thing
itself, was made by Noah, acting under divine
impulse, into three partitions, one of which was
appropriated to each of his three sons. According to
the Hebrew chronology, this authoritative distribution
took place about a century after the deluge, most
probably at the birth of Peleg, and his name was a
memorial of that event. Other interpretations have
been given of this passage. Some, rendering the
words, 'the earth was cut into canals'….
GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED
 …Hebrew verb to cleave, to divide water-courses' (Job
38:25), says Cyril Graham, 'refers rather to a mechanical
division of land, such as plowing or cutting, than to a
political division. We have no doubt that this notice, short
as it is, is a record of the first cutting of some of those
canals which are found in such numbers between the
    Tigris and the Euphrates…
 Others are of opinion that extensive landslips occurred-
the sea bursting through many parts of the solid land and
forming straits and gulfs, or separating continents, and
that it was to such breaches 'the dividing of the earth'
    refers.
 A third class suppose that the allusion is not to the
general dispersion of Noah's descendants, but to a
    division in Eber's family-the Joktanidoe….

GML COMPASS, NEVER RAINED PRE-FLOOD?

 You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis 2:5-6
    …to Genesis 7:4…
 God had not sent rain upon the earth . . . But a mist used to
rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the
ground. —Genesis 2:5-6 I will send . . . rain on the earth
forty days and forty nights; —Genesis 7:4
 There is an interesting theory that the weather problems
today may have stemmed from the atmospheric changes
due to the mountains that formed as the continents
separated—either during or just after the flood. This theory
assumes that the animals on the earth were all from one
piece of land for Noah to take on the ark…
GML COMPASS, NEVER RAINED PRE-FLOOD?

 ... There is some scientific evidence (that doesn't refute
biblical teaching) that the seven major land masses were
previously one large piece of land. Also, since the water
God sent came from above AND below, there was
apparently some kind of vapor canopy surrounding the
earth. This water canopy fell, causing the flood, along with
the water from the great deep (Genesis 7:11).
 Since people lived much longer in those days, the vapor
canopy protection from the sun could have contributed to
    this long life…

GEN 10:32, LOCAL FLOOD?
 Gen 10:32 These are the clans of Noah's sons,
according to their lines of descent, within their
nations. From these the nations spread out over the
    earth after the flood.
 If their were other “lines of descent, within their
nations” that didn’t get off Noah’s barge, wouldn’t
God have an obligation to mention them here?
 If Noah’s flood was a local flood, was God ignorant of
them, or their “lines of descent,” or is He avoiding
mention of all the others who survived the local flood,
or is He being deceptive? Cause it sure sounds like
“From these the nations spread out over the earth
    after the flood.”
GEN 11:1-4
 Gen 11:1-9 Now the whole world had one
language and a common speech. 2 As men
moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar
  and settled there.
 3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make
bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used
brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then
they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city,
with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so
that we may make a name for ourselves and not
be scattered over the face of the whole earth."

 German archaeologist Robert Koldewey in
1899… dug on the Babel site for some
fourteen years and unearthed many of its
features including the outer walls, inner
walls, foundation of the Tower of Babel,

    the heart of the city.

BABEL= CONFUSION

   OT:894, Babel (baw-bel'); from OT:1101;
    confusion; Babel (i.e. Babylon), including
    Babylonia and the Babylonian empire:

 KJV - Babel, Babylon.
GEN 11:5-9
 5 But the Lord came down to see the city and
the tower that the men were building. 6 The Lord
said, "If as one people speaking the same
language they have begun to do this, then
nothing they plan to do will be impossible for
them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their
language so they will not understand each
  other."
 8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all
the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 That is why it was called Babel — because
there the Lord confused the language of the
whole world. From there the Lord scattered them
over the face of the whole earth.

 1 Cor 14:19-25 But in the church I would rather speak
five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand
words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, stop thinking like
children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking
be adults. 21 In the Law it is written:
 "Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of
foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they
will not listen to me," says the Lord. 22 Tongues, then,
are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy,
however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23 So if the
whole church comes together and everyone speaks in
tongues, and some who do not understand or some
unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of
your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or someone who does

he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be

 27 This is the account of Terah.
 Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And
Haran became the father of Lot. 28 While his father Terah
was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the
land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor both married. The
name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's
wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the
father of both Milcah and Iscah. 30 Now Sarai was
    barren; she had no children.
 31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of
Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son
Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the
Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to
    Haran, they settled there.

 Today's differing racial and cultural characteristics began at the

In other words, they had a common gene pool. After the separation into
groups, each group contained only a part of the former gene pool. This

 The whole earth was populated by the descendants of Noah's three
    sons, v. 32.

    QUESTION FOR THE DAY
 Dear Compass,
 In a past GML you referenced Noah and how he obeyed
God even though it had never rained. I have heard this
before in my Sunday School class when we studied
Genesis, but now I can't find any verse to support it. What
    verse are you using?

    ANSWER:
 You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis 2:5-6,
not sent rain, to Genesis 7:4 will send rain (to flood).
 God had not sent rain upon the earth . . . But a mist used to
THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE THE ANCIENT LOCATION
OF THE TOWER OF BABEL
 Maury
Babylon lies 90 Kilometers south of Baghdad, and 10 Kilometers north
of Hilla the road to Babylon branches of the main Baghdad-Hilla
highway. Heavy traffic flows on a four-lane road, which becomes two
lanes without any slowing of traffic speeds. Terraces and green gardens
flourish behind walls, palm fronds sticking up like plants growing in giant,
square pots. Army posts frequently block roads, always with armed
    soldiers halting traffic for inspections
The Iraqi government has launched a project to renovate the interior of
the prophet Ezekiel's shrine in the small town of Kifl, south of Baghdad,
and the country's Ministry for Tourism and Antiquities says it hopes to
eventually repair and renovate other Jewish sites across the country.
This is believed to be the ancient location of the Tower of Babel.

  • 10. THE PULPIT COMMENTARY  The ethnological register.  I. PROCLAIMS THE UNITY OF THE RACE.  1. It declares all the successive families of mankind to have sprung from a common stock. Diverse as they flow are in their geographical situations, ethnic relations, physical capabilities, national peculiarities, according to the doctrine of this genealogical table they all trace their origin to Noah and his sons.
  • 11. ONE BLOOD  Acts 17:24-27 "The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. 26 From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live.  Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned--

  • 16. GEN 10:8-9, NIMROD  Gen 10:8-9 Cush was the father of Nimrod, who grew to be a mighty warrior on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord….  LXX translates the Hebrew gibbor as;  gi,gaj GI´GAS, Gi,gantej, the Giants, a savage race destroyed by the gods…
  • 17. GEN 10:9, JAMIESON, FAUSSET, AND BROWN  The adjunct "before the Lord" - literally, in the presence of Yahweh-has been variously interpreted. [The Septuagint adds Elohiym after Yahweh. By one class it is taken in a bad sense, as in the Septuagint [Enantion Kuriou], in the face, in spite of, against Yahweh. This also is the view of Josephus and the Jewish Targumists, who unite in regarding Nimrod as the originator of a systematic opposition to the true God. By another class it is believed to bear a good meaning….”
  • 18. NIMROD  Nimrod = "rebellion" or "the valiant" 1) the son of Cush, grandson of Ham, and great grandson of Noah; a mighty hunter, he established an empire in the area of Babylon and Assyria….  Geneva Bible Notes:  Gen 10:8 And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a (1) mighty one in the earth.  (1) Meaning, a cruel oppressor and tyrant.

  • 22. GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED  Gen 10:25  Two sons were born to Eber:  One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided; his brother was named Joktan.
  • 23. GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED  Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown says, “The natural view of these words implies a reference to a formal division of the earth, which, as has been thought, from several passages of Scripture (Deut 32:8; Acts 17:24-26), as well as from the probability of the thing itself, was made by Noah, acting under divine impulse, into three partitions, one of which was appropriated to each of his three sons. According to the Hebrew chronology, this authoritative distribution took place about a century after the deluge, most probably at the birth of Peleg, and his name was a memorial of that event. Other interpretations have been given of this passage. Some, rendering the words, 'the earth was cut into canals'….
  • 24. GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED  …Hebrew verb to cleave, to divide water-courses' (Job 38:25), says Cyril Graham, 'refers rather to a mechanical division of land, such as plowing or cutting, than to a political division. We have no doubt that this notice, short as it is, is a record of the first cutting of some of those canals which are found in such numbers between the Tigris and the Euphrates…  Others are of opinion that extensive landslips occurred- the sea bursting through many parts of the solid land and forming straits and gulfs, or separating continents, and that it was to such breaches 'the dividing of the earth' refers.  A third class suppose that the allusion is not to the general dispersion of Noah's descendants, but to a division in Eber's family-the Joktanidoe….

  • 28. GML COMPASS, NEVER RAINED PRE-FLOOD?  You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis 2:5-6 …to Genesis 7:4…  God had not sent rain upon the earth . . . But a mist used to rise from the earth and water the whole surface of the ground. —Genesis 2:5-6 I will send . . . rain on the earth forty days and forty nights; —Genesis 7:4  There is an interesting theory that the weather problems today may have stemmed from the atmospheric changes due to the mountains that formed as the continents separated—either during or just after the flood. This theory assumes that the animals on the earth were all from one piece of land for Noah to take on the ark…
  • 29. GML COMPASS, NEVER RAINED PRE-FLOOD?  ... There is some scientific evidence (that doesn't refute biblical teaching) that the seven major land masses were previously one large piece of land. Also, since the water God sent came from above AND below, there was apparently some kind of vapor canopy surrounding the earth. This water canopy fell, causing the flood, along with the water from the great deep (Genesis 7:11).  Since people lived much longer in those days, the vapor canopy protection from the sun could have contributed to this long life…
  • 30. GE.10:25, THE EARTH WAS DIVIDED Pangaea?
  • 31. GEN 10:32, LOCAL FLOOD?  Gen 10:32 These are the clans of Noah's sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.  If their were other “lines of descent, within their nations” that didn’t get off Noah’s barge, wouldn’t God have an obligation to mention them here?  If Noah’s flood was a local flood, was God ignorant of them, or their “lines of descent,” or is He avoiding mention of all the others who survived the local flood, or is He being deceptive? Cause it sure sounds like “From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.”
  • 32. GEN 11:1-4  Gen 11:1-9 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.  3 They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
  • 34. ARCHEOLOGY  German archaeologist Robert Koldewey in 1899… dug on the Babel site for some fourteen years and unearthed many of its features including the outer walls, inner walls, foundation of the Tower of Babel, Nebuchadnezzar's palaces and the wide processional roadway which passed through the heart of the city.
  • 35. DAN 3:19, SEVEN TIMES HOTTER  C. Missler says, “Furnace: N. Iraq: brick furnaces, size of city block; pitch, sulfur; + bellows.”  Archeological S.B says, “One kiln discovered at Nippur (from approx. 2000 B.C.) is fashioned like a railway tunnel, with one end blocked and the other serving as an entrance…punishment by burning is well attested in the ancient Near East”  Jer 29:22…The Lord treat you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon burned in the fire.'
  • 36. LOCATION OF THE TOWER OF BABEL?, FROM MAURY  Babylon lies 90 Kilometers This is believed to be south of Baghdad, and 10 the ancient location Kilometers north of Hilla of the Tower of …The Iraqi government has Babel. launched a project to renovate the interior of the prophet Ezekiel's shrine in the small town of Kifl, south of Baghdad, and the country's Ministry for Tourism and Antiquities says it hopes to eventually repair and renovate other Jewish sites across the country.
  • 37. BABEL= CONFUSION  OT:894, Babel (baw-bel'); from OT:1101; confusion; Babel (i.e. Babylon), including Babylonia and the Babylonian empire:  KJV - Babel, Babylon.
  • 38. GEN 11:5-9  5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building. 6 The Lord said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. 7 Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."  8 So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. 9 That is why it was called Babel — because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

  • 41. GENESIS 11:7, TONGUES  Geneva Notes says, “By this great plague of the confusion of tongues appears God's horrible judgment against man's pride and vain glory.”
  • 42. GENESIS 11:7, TONGUES  Ps 64:7-8 But God will shoot them with arrows; suddenly they will be struck down. 8 He will turn their own tongues against them and bring them to ruin; all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.  Isa 28:11 Very well then, with foreign lips and strange tongues God will speak to this people,  Paul quotes this in;
  • 43. GENESIS 11:7, TONGUES  1 Cor 14:19-25 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults. 21 In the Law it is written:  "Through men of strange tongues and through the lips of foreigners I will speak to this people, but even then they will not listen to me," says the Lord. 22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers. 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all,
  • 44. GEN 5:3-32, ADAM TO SHEM  Gen 5:3-5 When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. 4 After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.  Some teach that there are “gaps” in the genealogy here, yet hold to inerrancy.  How? Where?

  • 50. GEN 11:27-32, TÔLEDÔT OF TERAH  27 This is the account of Terah.  Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot. 28 While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth. 29 Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah. 30 Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.  31 Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.  32 Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.

Old world missionaries reported their amazement at finding remote tribes already possessing legends with tremendous similarities to the Bible's accounts of the worldwide flood. H.S. Bellamy in Moons, Myths and Men estimates that altogether there are over 500 Flood legends worldwide. Ancient civilizations such as (China, Babylonia, Wales, Russia, India, America, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Sumatra, Peru, and Polynesia) all have their own versions of a giant flood.  These flood tales are frequently linked by common elements that parallel the Biblical account…”  http://www.nwcreation.net/noahlegends.html

ACTS 17:26, GEN 11  TODAY'S CREATION MOMENT  DIFFERENT RACES, ONE BLOOD  Listen  Acts 17:26  "And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation…"  How did we get all of the different races on earth if we are all descended from Adam and Noah and his family?  Today's differing racial and cultural characteristics began at the separation of the world's population into different groups based upon language. This followed the affair at the Tower of Babel. Before this separation, the one population shared the genetic traits of all humanity. In other words, they had a common gene pool. After the separation into groups, each group contained only a part of the former gene pool. This means that each group had lost some of the genetic information. As one
  • 55. PANGAEA  #3. Did Noah’s ark have anything to do with Pangaea?   Dear Compass,  In a past GML you referenced Noah and how he obeyed God even though it had never rained. I have heard this before in my Sunday School class when we studied Genesis, but now I can't find any verse to support it. What verse are you using?   ANSWER:  You come to that conclusion by comparing Genesis 2:5-6, not sent rain, to Genesis 7:4 will send rain (to flood).  Genesis 2:5-6 God had not sent rain upon the earth . . . The study has revealed an unexpected lack of diversity within worldwide human mitochondrial lineages, despite high mutation rates, and this supports the idea that humanity is only a few thousand years old.  …it contains several interesting tenets: 1) there was a single dispersal of mankind with three main mitochondrial lineages interspersed within clans; 2) the dispersion was centered in the Middle East in the recent past; 3) the dispersion was essentially tribal in nature, with small groups pushing into previously uninhabited territory; and 4) genetic evidence indicates that male lineages are much more geographically specific than female lineages, with female migration rates up to eight times greater than males. This latter tenet is an expression of the Babel account in Genesis, where the initial, well-mixed population split up and migrated

A mitochondrion is a cellular power plant that generates most of the chemical energy the cell needs to support its functions. Although most of a cell's DNA is contained in the nucleus, the mitochondrion has its own small DNA molecule and this DNA is passed down from mother to child.
