What is war Poetry? ● Young war poet of the first world war established war poetry as a literary genre. ● In 1914 hundred of young men in uniform took to writing poetry as a way of striving to express extreme emotion at the very edge of experience. ● Although “War poet” tends traditionally to refer to active combatants , war poetry has been written by many ‘civilians’ caught up in other ways. So the war poetry became the Reflection of soldiers own experience of war, suffering cause of war etc.
  5. 5. Continue.. ● War poetry is not necessarily ‘anti-war’. It is however, about the very large questions of life: identity, innocence, guilt, loyalty, courage, compassion, humanity, duty, desire, death etc. ● Its response to these questions, and its relation of immediate personal experience to moments of national and international crisis, gives war poetry an extra literary importance.

About Rupert Brooke ● Rupert Chawner Brooke ● Born: 3 August,1887 ● Died: 23 April, 1915 ● He was an english poet known for his idealistic war sonnets written during the first world war. ● He was handsome, charming, and talented, Brooke was a national hero even before his death in 1915 at the age of 27. ● Brooke's early years were typical of virtually every English boy who was a member of a well-to-do family. He attended a prestigious boarding school— Rugby, where his father was a headmaster—studied Latin and Greek, and began to write poetry.

About the poem “Peace” ● The poem written during late 1914, Expresses the hopeful idealism and enthusiasm with which britain entered the war. ● In sonnet “peace” Booke rejoices in the feeling that the war is a welcome relief to a generation for whom life had been empty and void of meaning. ● It is a sonnet poem ● The poem begins with deterministic recognition of the war as part of god’s divine plan, so that is all about being thankful to god for giving one the strength to reach peace and for the opportunity of having their sins absolved through death for a good cause, herefore, to be able to enter heaven.
  8. 8. Explanation of poem “Peace” Now, God be thanked who has matched us with his hour, And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping! With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power, To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
  9. 9. Continue.. Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary; Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move, And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary, And all the little emptiness of love!
  10. 10. Continue.. Oh! We, who have known shame, we have found release there, Where there’s no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending, Naught broken save this body, lost but breath; Nothing to shake the laughing heart’s long peacethere,
  11. 11. Continue.. But only agony, and that has ending; And the worst friend and enemy is but Death.
