  4. Let’s talk about the different types of Metadata and how it relates to your book. First we have the Core metadata.
  5. The second section of Metadata is the Descriptive Content. Some examples are:
  6. The last section of Metadata is the Enhanced Content. Some examples are:
  7. BISG creates standards for how to send metadata to different partners. This is so the data is unified for all partners receiving and loading the data. One of the main points of metadata that publishers seem to have issues with is the title. It seems that everyone puts other data points in the title that don’t belong. One of the first data points that crops up in the title is edition information.
  8. Edition information should not be included in the title. At Bowker, if we receive a data feed that has the edition information in the title we will remove it and place it in the edition information field. This is an example of a title where the publisher included the words “first edition” in the title field. We removed that information from the title. If it’s the first edition of the book, this data is not needed because it is assumed it’s the first edition. Once the second edition comes out you would include that data but put it in the edition number field.
  9. Here is an example of a title that included the edition number in the title field as well as the edition number field. You can see in the ONIX tags that is included numerous times. We remove this information and only keep it in the edition number field. If the title didn’t include the edition number field then we would still remove it and just put it in the edition number field so it’s not in the title.
  10. On the screen I have included the BISG best practices for edition number. You can see that it clearly states to put the edition number in the edition number tag which is B057.
  11. Foreign Language is another part of the edition that we see in the title field. Here you can see that the words “Spanish edition” was included in the title field. We have removed it from the title field and filled in the language field. We also included the Spanish title and the translated title.
  12. Special edition information should also not be included in the title field. Here the publisher included “50thanniversay edition” in the title. We removed this and added it to the edition information field.
  13. Here is the BISG best practices for the onix tags to include the edition information in.Basically, all edition information should be included in their own fields and not the title field. The title should appear in your data files the same way it appears on the cover of your book. All other data should be in the appropriate tags such as edition information and edition number.
  14. Another data point that we see in the title is the Series information. Let’s take a look at how this data should look.
  15. Here is an example of how the series name came in a file to us a few different ways. We went ahead and standardized the series name so they all show the same across all titles. You want to make sure you always send the series name the same way for all titles to avoid any confusion on what the series title name is.
  16. At Bowker, it is our best practice to include the Ser after the series title name. This way it is clearly identified as the series.
  17. When sending the series title, you should make sure you only include the series title in the series title field. If you series has a subtitle that should be included in a separate field. Here you can see The series name is Let’s read ad find out Science and Stage 1 is the subtitle of the series. Be sure to parse all this out in the appropriate fields before sending your data.
  18. The first book in the series is treated as the first edition. You want to make sure you don’t include this information in your series title name.
  19. Another topic that we often get questions about is the series.
  20. Libraries commonly encourage browsing by subjects including dewey classification codes, library call numbers, and keywords. Subject codes are also used to drive “Find Similar Book” widgets and “View the shelf” widgets. So ensure you are offering multiple subject codes and not using general codes when a more specific one is available. Using the retail industry standards are BISAC and BIC is great, but feel free to add your own keywords or proprietary subject codes as well.
  21. What is it?The BISAC Subject Heading list is an industry-approved list of subject descriptors, each of which is represented by a nine-character alphanumeric code. The descriptor itself consists of two, three or four parts in the manner described above.
  22. Here is an example of title that have the bisac subject codes attached to them. You can see that on Booksinprint.com we include the Publisher supplied bisac codes. We also go and add other bisac codes to the titles. We do this so the titles are more discvoerable and come up more in searches. If we receive only 1 and we add 2 subjects then that is more ways the title will be found. You want to be sure the first subject code you attach is the most important. This way if the partner you are sending data to only takes 1 subject it is the most important one.
  23. Another topic that we often get questions about is the description.
  24. When crafting a description for your title you want to make sure you do the following:Provide a detailed description (at least one paragraph) about each title. Aim your text at potential buyers. Supply this description 6 months prior to product release date. Include common keywords for your subject area that may not be listed in the title. Example: Title--Getting Along With Man’s Best Friend, Description--An easy to use, step by step guide to training your dog for behavior problems including barking, biting, and sitting. Put the most important information at the beginning of each entry as customers may prefer to display either longer or shorter descriptions. Include in your text a description of the product, information about the author, awards, honors, or the author’s previous titles. Avoid using text copied directly from commercial word-processing programs. These programs embed their own proprietary tags within the text, which may translate to random characters in a later version of your description. It is best to use a text editor, such as WordPad, that carefully controls encoding of any pasted text.
  25. Here is the BISG best practices for the onix tags to include the edition information in.Basically, all edition information should be included in their own fields and not the title field. The title should appear in your data files the same way it appears on the cover of your book. All other data should be in the appropriate tags such as edition information and edition number.

  27. Another topic that we often get questions about is the description.
  28. One of the main parts of enhanced metadata is the cover image. You should make sure you have a high quality decent sized cover image. Metadata recipients might have different guidelines for images. You should make sure you check with them to see what size and format they require the image to be in before sending it.
  29. Missing cover images may already cause frustration for buyers and put them on alert about a title. But the placeholder that the retailer puts in for your missing cover image may cause your record to look even worse. Ensure you supply your cover images as soon as they become available to all parties you send your basic metadata to in order to ensure your records are appealing to customers.
