Remember AIDS does not discriminate caste, creed, race, religion, educational or social status. Prevention of AIDS is our joint responsibility. Education and awareness is the only weapon in our hand. Let us accept the challenge to fight against AIDS. We must support and care for the people with HIV / AIDS with compassion and understanding. We need to be aware of the AIDS and very frankly it’s the demand of time, if we really want to eradicate AIDS from the society then we need to discuss about AIDS in society. 8. Myth1: AIDS is mostly an African problem.
Fact: Of the 42 million people around the world who live with
HIV/AIDS, 70% are in sub-Saharan Africa. But AIDS is not an
African problem.
Myth 2: AIDS ONLY OCCURS IN HOMOSEXUAL MEN AND DRUG
ABUSERS.
Fact:Anyone infected with HIV can get AIDS if they are not
treated with medications to stop replication of the virus in
their bodies.

9. MYTH 3: HIV-INFECTED WOMEN SHOULD NOT HAVE
CHILDREN.
Fact: There is concern of transmission, but certain
steps, including medications, can prevent
transmission
MYTH 4: HIV AND AIDS INFECTION CAN BE CURED.
Fact: There is no current “cure” for HIV. Medications
reduce replication of the virus which increases life
span.

Myth6- Sex with a virgin can cure HIV-
Fact: This myth is totally untrue. The myth has resulted in many
rapes of young girls and children by HIV+ men, who often
infect their victims.

11. Myth 7 - AIDS can be contracted through non-sexual physical
contact like hug, kiss, and hand-shake or by sharing toilet
seats, utensils, mosquito bites, etc.
Fact - HIV or AIDS does not occur by any of the above.
Myth 8 – HIV/AIDS is curable.
Fact - The medications that are available right now can only
delay the transformation of HIV into full-blown AIDS and not
cure it.

12. Myth 9 - Most people who get infected with HIV become
seriously ill within three years.
Fact - In fact, after a person is infected with HIV, there is usually
no change in that person's health for quite a few years. This
period is normally around 10 years, with an average range of
some 8 to 12 years in length.
Myth 10 - It is possible to get HIV from mosquito bites or
kissing.
Fact - HIV can only survive in the living body of a human. There
has been only one recorded case of HIV transmission via
kissing, out of all the many millions of kisses. In this case, both
partners had extremely badly bleeding gums.

Myth 12 - The top partner during vaginal and anal sex is at low
risk for HIV.
Fact - In reality, the top partner (the inserting partner) is at
high risk of infection, and the bottom partner (the receiving
partner) is at even higher risk of infection.

14. Myth 13- Oral Sex fails to transmit HIV.
Fact - HIV is transmitted through all forms of unprotected
sex, including oral, vaginal and anal.
Myth 14 - Condoms protect against all STDs/HIV
Fact - According to the Family Planning Association, there is little
evidence to suggest that condoms protect against the
transmission of genital warts. It is also uncertain whether or
not condoms can protect against genital herpes. But because
condoms cannot protect against every form of STD.
