SAFETY ALWAYS COMES FIRST!
Antarctic weather is highly unpredictable and changes occur constantly which, of course,
can have an adverse effect on travel on the Continent. From early days explorers have had
to manage these ever changing climate and general environmental conditions. This
continues to be so, even today, despite modern technology and advanced forecasting
systems. Safety is always the paramount concern on any Antarctic voyage - it will never be
put at risk by taking actions that may result in a disappointing end to a unique experience.

PORTAL POINT
Portal Point lies at the entrance to Charlotte Bay on the Reclus
Peninsula, on the west coast of Graham Land. It was named by the
British after they built a refuge hut at this site in 1956, enabling
them to use a nearby snow slope as a gateway up onto the
Peninsula plateau. The hut was occupied between 1956 and 1958.
Research conducted from this field hut focused on surveying the
region and geology. The building was dismantled in 1997 and
taken to the Falkland Islands where it is now an exhibit in the
museum at Stanley. Portal Point is also quite scenic due to the
surrounding mountains, crevassed glaciers and glacial tongues
that extend down to sea level.
PUNTO PORTAL

ORNE HARBOUR
Orne Harbour lies on the northwest side of the Arctowski
Peninsula, near the northern entrance to Errera Channel. It was
discovered by Gerlache in 1898 and named by whalers. The
harbour has two parts and is surrounded by glaciers. At the
southern entrance lies Spigot Peak, a black 286 m (938 ft) tall
spire named after a spigot or cask plug.
PUERTO ORNE

LEMAIRE CHANNEL
Lemaire Channel is an 11 km long by 1.6 km wide (7 mi by 1 mi)
passage that runs from False Cape Renard to Cape Cloos,
separating Booth Island from the Antarctic continent. It was
discovered by Dallmann ’ s German expedition of 1873 but
Gerlache was the first to navigate the channel in 1898 and named
it in honour of Charles Lemaire, a Belgian explorer of the Congo.
At its narrowest, the Lemaire Channel is less than 800 m (0.5 mi)
wide with towering peaks in excess of 300 m (985 ft) overhead.
The channel can be full of icebergs and sea ice which makes
manoeuvring difficult. However, this is a good location for seeing
crabeater seals, Weddell seals and leopard seals hauled out on ice
floes and Minke whales in transit. Lemaire Channel is nick-named
Kodak Canal, Fuji Funnel and Agfa Alley and is one of the most
scenic channels in the Peninsula.
LEMAIRE CHANNEL

NEKO HARBOUR
Neko Harbour lies on the eastern shore of Andvord Bay, approximately
11 km (7 mi) south of the Errera Channel. It was discovered by Gerlache
during his Belgian Antarctic
expedition (1897-9). It is
named for the floating
whale factory ship, Neko,
which often used this bay.
Neko operated between
1911-2 and 1923-4 in the
South Shetlands and
Antarctic Peninsula. This site
is a continent landing and
home to approximately
250 breeding pairs of gentoo penguins, some of which nest around the
ex Argentinian refuge hut. Weddell seals may also be seen hauled-out on
the cobblestone beach or above the landing site.
PUERTO NEKO
21. 64˚44’ S, 62˚37’ W
DANCO ISLAND
Danco Island lies in the southern end of the Errera Channel. It is relatively
small, 1.6 km (1 mi) long, but quite high (180 m or 590 ft). The view from
the top of Danco Island is spectacular due to the heavily cravassed glaciers
in the surrounding mountains. This section of the Errera Channel is a
hotspot for Minke and humpback whales which can often be heard from
shore. Beautiful rolled icebergs also tend to collect in this area of the
channel. Danco Island is home to approximately 1,600 breeding pairs of
gentoo penguins which breed quite high up on the slopes. Danco Island was
also home to the British Antarctic Survey’s Station O. Fieldwork conducted
from this hut focused on surveying the region and geological research. It
was closed in 1959 when work was completed. The hut was removed in
2004, a plaque indicating its location can still found on shore.
ISLA DANCO

MIKKELSEN HARBOUR
Mikkelsen Harbour lies on the southern coast of Trinity Island at the
northern end of the Palmer Archipelago. The site was discovered by
Nordenskjöld on his Swedish Antarctic Expedition of 1901-4. The
harbour was used by whalers for mooring factory ships and named
for Norwegian whaler Captain Klarius Mikkelsen after his wife. On
the island there is a gentoo penguin colony, a few unoccupied huts
and a radio mast.
PUERTO MIKKELSEN

NOTES OF THE DAY:
Antarctica didn’t want us to leave! Weather was not good and the flight was delayed. That gave us the opportunity of landing at Ardley
Island where we observed Adelie penguins as well as penguin chicks, which are very rear at this early time of the Southern summer. In
the morning we also went cruising with Humpback whales! A big bonus, since it was the first time of the voyage we could see them
from a close distance. After lunch we were welcomed at Bellingshausen and Fildes Stations were we visited the Russian Orthodox, a
souvenir shop and the bases quarters.

ARDLEY ISLAND
Ardley Island is situated about 500 m east of the coast of Fildes
Peninsula, Maxwell Bay, King George Island. It has been defined by the
Antarctic Treaty System as an Antarctic Specially Protected Area (ASPA)
n. 150, because of its exceptional biological interest. It has a diverse
avifauna with 12 breeding species, and is of particular importance for
its breeding colonies of Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua): the largest
concentration of Gentoos within the South Shetland Islands and
probably in the Antarctic. There are also about 1,200 pairs of breeding
Adelie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) and a small number of Chinstrap
penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica). The island possesses some of the best-
developed and most extensive plant communities in the South Shetland
Islands, dominated by macro lichens.
ISLA ARDLEY
