Grit is about perseverance and about knowing what you want and being fully motivated to get it. Every year at DCMS we provide orientation information to our students and parents about our school culture. This year we made an addition to the orientation to include overcoming obstacles and about finding and developing the range of personal skills and attitudes needed for your ultimate success.

what is important is how you react to
the struggle.
Will you give up? Or will you keep going
no matter what? The choice is yours!

7. WHY DO SOME PEOPLE TRY
HARDER THAN OTHERS?
ASK TWO
QUESTIONS
Why do some people
accomplish more than
others of equal (or
greater) talent?
8. “Grit” is perseverance and passion for long-term goals.
“Grit” means working strenuously toward challenges,
maintaining both effort and interest over years and
years – despite failure, adversity and even just stalls in
progress.
The gritty individual approaches achievement as a
marathon; his advantage is stamina.

9. Talent is about practice.
Talent takes effort.
Talent requires a good coach.
Talent is about hard work.
HOW DO I GET TO BE GOOD AT
SOMETHING?
You’re just born that way – you are naturally (athletic,
good at math, good at singing, good at English…)
Recent research shows that it’s not in your genes!
It is about developing your
talents.
10. • Think of a person you know (or know of)
who practiced and practiced a skill until he
or she became proficient.
• Who is the person?
• What did he or she do?
Think of a person you
know who has “GRIT”.
11. Grittier adults complete more
years of education.
Grittier college
undergraduates have higher
GPAs than their peers, even if
their SAT scores are lower.

12. Think and Respond
Why do you think that “grittier” students have
higher GPAs than students with less “GRIT”?
Think silently for a moment, and I will call on a
few students to share your responses.
13. Achievement is the product of talent
AND effort.
Effort is not just intensity (how hard
you work) but also consistency (do
you keep going?) and duration (how
long do you work?)

25. Is it Bullying?
When someone says or does something
unintentionally hurtful and they do it once,
that’s RUDE
When someone says or does something
intentionally hurtful and they do it once, that’s

When someone says or does
something intentionally hurtful and they
keep doing it- even when you tell them
to stop or show them that you’re upset
– that’s BULLYING

Setting Personal Goals
The first step in reaching your goal is to identify it. Writing the goal down will help you to realize what it will take to reach it.
Listing your obstacles is the second step in goal setting. Several young people share the obstacles they have faced while pursuing their goals.
The more ambitious your goal is, the more help you will need. The third step in goal setting is to identify individuals or groups you will need to work with.
The fourth step in goal setting is to identify the skills you will need. To reach your goal, you will need to assess the skills you currently have, and find ways to obtain the skills you will need.
The most important part of goal setting is to make a thorough plan of action including a timeline. Several young people share their plans for reaching their goals.
These are two of the most powerful words in the world. It doesn’t matter who speaks them or to whom they are being spoken, the power is there.
Wanting to know you matter to someone is more than just a request for recognition; it is a desire and quest for significance. We don’t want to know we matter; we need to know.
You Yes You the one reading this. You are beautiful, talented amazing and simply the best at being you. Never forget that.
Each and every one of you is a genius and the world is waiting on your contributions.
