- Hi, I’m Brennan LaBrie. I’m 10 and I live in Port Townsend.
- This is my first PP presentation and also my first time speaking in front of an audience that is older than myself. In the past, I’ve talked to 1 st and 2ed graders about journalism.
- It’s been a great couple of years for me. I started my hand written neighborhood newspaper, The Spruce Street Weekly, a year and a half ago. My paper focuses is on good news and I believe that everyone has a great story in them.
- I was inspired to publish a newspaper by my 1 st grade teacher, Allen Fox. My big mentor to date has been Frank Garred, The Former Publisher of the Port Townsend Leader.
- I found out my great passion for journalism
- I love to read the New York Times and any newspapers I can get a hold of. My mother tells me all the time to put down my newspaper.
- I love digging up news and investigating – but most of all, I love interviewing people. Here I am getting the scoop from Congressman Norm Dicks at the recent Town Hall Meeting On Health Care at Fort Wardon State Park.
- September was the biggest month of my life.
- I was one of 12 kids chosen from 400 kids across the nation to be a Kid Reporter for Time Magazine, who puts out a kids publication called Time For Kids. It’s distributed to schools across the nation and has additional articles on their website.
- One of the assignments TIME would like me to cover is the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver Canada this February. I’m very excited about the opportunity.
- I set-up an account on Twitter..
- As a result of being on Twitter for just a couple of days, I developed a relationship with a NPR program manager and set-up an interview between me and Scott Simon the Host For NPR Weekend Edition that is heard by over 4 million weekly. I’ve chatted with Scott on the air now twice.
- Social media has helped me to make connections to national stories, to Olympic athletes and national TV appearances. How social media can help your business – example of how
- Next week, I’m going to the Microsoft campus to learn about the classroom of the future. The contact was a result of Twitter.
- In the last month or so, I’ve been working with Jack Olmsted who has been teaching me about video journalism. Currently, I have about 20 video reports online that run over 90 minutes.
- I’ve interviewed musicians….here I am with the world renowned Jazz Bass Player John Clayton.
- Academy Award winning actress Cloris Leachman at the PT Film Festival. That was a blast!
- Tibetan Monks
- I’ve covered the Centrum music festivals, the Port Townsend wooden boat festival, the Port Townsend film festival, the kinetic sculpture race and of course, the people that take part in them.
- It seems everyone I interview loves this area, because it’s beautiful and the people are cool. I’m proud to be from Olympic Peninsula, I think it’s a really, really unique place. How could you ever get tired of it? It’s got such variety, it’s really got something for everybody.
- On Scott Simon’s NPR Weekend Edition I got to brag about Port Townsend, and I was really happy about that.
