5. What are Researchers looking
for on the Web?
•Tools for improving their workflow,
to gain efficiency
•Communication, sharing, collaboration,
dissemination research ideas and output
•to possibly get bigger recognition and reward of
their research output
11. TRENDS
•Libraries are taking the lead
•Collaboration with IT and Research Office
•Tools & support
•Advocacy and training
•Reskilling
Research Data
Management
47. Publication Lists
We are now even more aware of the trouble people have
making publication overviews
•No standards
•No easy way
•No one source
•No help
•So many are spending a lot of time over and over again...
58. The impact ...
Talking with key stakeholders
within the organisation
•Research Office
•Press Office
•Staff departments
•University of Groningen Library
& Bureau
And with many Departments and
their secretaries
60. My
Guess
•New CRIS generation
•Data managent
•Linked and enhanced data
•Web tools for communication, collaboration,
interaction
•Cloud computing & Opensource
•Networks (social, virtual, research)
•Metrics (Biblio- & Alt-)
•Mobile & Tablets
Notas do Editor
And web 2.0 is facilitating all those things with … tools for collaboration, communication and sharing
Numerous examples of scientist looking for collaboration, sharing, communication and dealing with information, and little to no involvement of libraries
Research Data Management
A special service department in the UMCG is created to support research in statistical, technical and other ways, for, in most cases clinical studies and projects, http://tcc.umcg.nl/en/26/Statistiek.html. (this not related to the library)
For data management they never thought of the library as possible partner, neither for selection or critical appraisal of literature, or for making publications lists available etc.
Unified Resource Discovery Tools
Linked data : Collections will be networked, interlinked and virtuali.e. Europeana
Service Oriented architecture SOA
The idea
My main belief is still that libraries will never be no 1 on the priority list of any researcher; the actual research will always be his primary focus. Stuff that libraries do or supply can only marginally contribute to his work directly.
If we understand this complex process of research in detail, we will be able to identify where exactly libraries can facilitate.
Basically i think the primary workflow of the individual researcher is a good way to start
A few years ago we were not involved in any support to researchers specifically, other than the document delivery system.
Research programs and departments can work very autonomic and because of separate financing they like to act pretty independent.
Search Help
We started with targeting researchers with specific help:
Setting up initial search strategies, advice database selections, and setting up alerts
Help with the creation of systematic reviews & clinical trials, as far as this was related to search and appraisal.
Offering workshops in evidence based medicine, improving search skills, reference management.

Integration & embedding
We are (just now) involved in the new Electronic Patient Record System. (EPD) to think about integration of scientific literature or any library services/licenses, for improve the updating mechanism for instance protocols, but also to support the research activities, collecting data during patient care. We don’t want researchers (but not only them of course) have to leave this system to go and search for literature. Relevant here is also the selection, saving, re-use of references & lists.
¥Two of our colleagues talk on regular basis with educational and research coordinators across all departments of the UMCG. These tours take two years before returning to the first department again. Almost every visit generates new tasks or request, workshops, demos etc.
Reference Management
We want them to save time and be more efficient in their daily work.
Better, more efficient searching help, doing one on one help is crucial.
Support with reference management on their workspace, or via Remote Assistance helps them in the actual writing of the publications.
Refworks, Mendeley?
Desktop & Web: works like social music tools, discovery by simularities
Instructions for Authors
We have special pages Instruction for authors, With different services & info http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibcmb/instructies_auteurs/index
Institutional Repository
Promoting and developing the institutional repository is still slow on progress, but we managed to become the leading partner in METIS for the hospital.
Current Research Information System
The library is involved in implementing the new combined CRIS & IR with Pure from Atira in the project ETALAGE.
Social Networks for Scientist
In workshops on Science 2.0 i show them how others are using web 2.0 and social media for science and research
iPad on Loan
¥The iPad on loan project introduced also researchers to this new innovative instrument, giving them more control, and even new ideas to reorganize work. How they can be more efficient, working towards paperless meetings. The library is now seen by many in the hospital as a partner to take part in many projects touching it- and information management. Working together in these projects giving advice & input about the needs of users (including researchers) is very rewarding and boost again the perception of the library in general. We advise individuals in relevant apps and technology to help their workflow, communication, writing, searching etc.
Aggregator, without telling how!
Simpel, easy and cheap, using existing resources.
We do not have a huge team or large budgets available for technical installations or development. The University of Groningen library is doing a lot and we work together on a good level, but this is something we started alone.

Performance Funding
We have created Top 25 Journal lists, http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibcmb/instructies_auteurs/top_25/index
The UMCG evaluates individual research output with the program "Prestatiefinanciering" . Basically they want authors to publish in the Top25% Journals in the right Subject categories of the Journal Citation Reports. To make it easier for them to identify these Top25 lists are published on our website.

¥Publication Lists,I am writing an overview of all possible ways to create publication lists, because everybody wants them in some way. Right now so many departments generate these by hand, without the (correct) links, authors struggle in keeping them up to date. Helping key authors, professors and leading departments generated a larger awareness inside the hospital that the library can contribute, and they turn to us in growing numbers now.A project is initiated to supply the Genetics department with a dynamic list of publications right on the umcg.nl website.
¥Personal Staff PagesWe help individual staff in filling their personal pages (MEPA, Medewerkerspagina) on the website to show their publications.

Support the Research Office
We help the Research Office in creating their research output overview and analysis tools.
We advise them in new possibilities and developments that can influence their workflow to improve quality or efficiency.
Open Acces Poster Portal & Conference facility
Another project to promote UMCG research is the Open Access UMCG Poster Portal.
http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/locaties/bibcmb/instructies_auteurs/posters/index?lang=en
This new project is starting up with promoting the deposit of scientific posters and oral presentations into the F1000 Poster Portal. It facilitates for instance conferences in hosting and archiving the posters of their delegates. See the presentation link for more.
Ultimate goal: collect all UMCG posters and slides structurally in one Open Access UMCG Portal, and eventually visualize who has been where doing what
Research Coordinators?
By talking to research coordinators inside the hospital we become more aware of processes that are taking place around the overall research tasks. They have specific needs in support in efficient, flexible but safe file- and data management.
