Reflection On My Composition 1 Course
Throughout my Composition 1 course, I participated by composing five writing samples and a
writing analysis to go with writing sample. Each writing sample was a different writing style and
each writing analysis connects with a practiced skilled used in our writing samples. Also our student
learning objective is to communicate effectively.
Our instructor assigned a different writing sample each week and we would have about a week to
work on it. In class, we were given back round knowledge of each writing sample and information
to better each writing sample. After we were given the writing sample and the criteria, I participated
by taking what I learned from class to compose the writing sample given and also connecting the
student learning objective

Essay about Self-Reflection: Writing Composition
I have always enjoyed writing, and I believed writing was a subject I was naturally good at. I
turned in papers that were still rough drafts, I did not evaluate my sources, nor did I ever take the
time to fully understand the prompt. It was not until my first semester of college, in my writing
composition course, I realized that I had a lot of work ahead of me to be as good a writer as I thought
I was. In the writing course, the students were required to compose several essays using different
methods to help progress on the course objectives. The work in this portfolio demonstrates that I
have used the methods of synthesis and evaluation of sources to advance my critical thinking skills
and develop personal responsibility. Though I have...show more content...
I was able to interpret the different type of impact the subjects experienced and then I was able to
give a potential reason to why the impact on the subjects was different. In a more recent synthesis
essay, called "Ashputtle and the Rough–Faced Girl", I wrote "Ashputtle is given clothes to heal her
emotional wounds" (Tharwani 2). In the story, the author does not reveal the symbolic
relationship between the clothes and Ashputtle's emotional wounds; I had to critically think and
recognize this symbolic relationship. I feel I have significantly improved my critical thinking
skills to a point where I can confidently call it one of my b strengths in writing. However, I
improved my critical thinking skills by not only writing synthesis essays, but also by evaluating
sources to use in those essays. Another method, evaluation of sources, further progress my
critical thinking skills and helped me develop personal responsibility. When writing essays,
quotes are a great strategy to prove a point. However, finding the right quotes and as well as
deciding if the source of the quote is reliable might be a challenge for some people; this was not
the case for me. In one of my essays, called "Shocking Results", I wrote "Jerry Burger, a
psychologist, points out that 'follow–up questionnaire data [indicated] that the vast majority of

Descriptive Essay On A Trip To The City
The feeling of my breakfast trying to see the outside world again, combined with the earthquake like
turbulence made me more than ready to hop off the plane. It was ten in the morning and I couldn't
wait any longer to begin the start of a new adventure. Seven months had passed since my mother
announced that the family was going to take a trip to one of the most iconic cities in America. We
had looked up practically every single tourist attraction that New York cityhad to offer. After weeks
of arguing we booked a trip with a tour guide who would take us all around the city in a day. The
advertisement said we would be taking a trip to Queens, Manhattan, and to the Statue of Liberty.
The plane finally landed and it was time to explore and see what the "Big Apple" had to offer.
Heading out of our terminal, we were greeted by our tour guide, who had a face whiter than snow
and a gigantic smile. I walked into the bus and greeted the strangers that were going to accompany
us. As the bus traveled along the road leading to our destination, I noticed how different New York
City was from my hometown of Houston, Texas. Everything in the "Big Apple" felt more modern,
and there was a much different, possibly busier aura around the people living there. As I
contemplated about the differences, our tour guide had stopped at our first destination, the
Chinatown of Queens, New York. Walking out of the bus, I immediately felt immersed into the
community. It was as if everyone in the

This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but
I had to drop it because I didn't have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn't
understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I
wasn't that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes
thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This
semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and
weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester. My
first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I...show more content...
I was really happy that I didn't have trouble filling up those pages. This contributed to my essay
writing because it showed me that if I don't give and try my best I will be able to do it. It also
showed me to always think positive, if I'm always thinking of negative stuff I won't be able to set
my mind free and try my best in the stuff I do. Another strength I had was finding the symbols in
the short story ВЁThe LotteryВЁ. When I first read it I didn't find any symbols. After Mrs.
Philpott gave us the lesson on symbolism in literature I found many symbols. I also saw how
those symbols give the readers clues so we could get a clue of how the ending is. I won't forget
about this lesson and when I read books I'm going to pay close attention to the words. If I pay
attention to that maybe I will get a taste of how the ending is going to be. This was one of the
lesson I enjoyed the most. This contributed because this is something I'm going to know for the
rest of my life. The third writing strength I had was that I didn't have trouble with the quotes. We
had a lesson over how we had to add the quotes on the essay. That lesson helped my mind refresh
from what I had learned during high school. I wasn't completely lost on this, but had to pay
attention. I was a little scared because it said that if I plagiarized I would get a zero and possibly
fail the semester. I personally think that we the writers don't really try to plagiarize. The only thing

My experience throughout English 101 Essay
My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest
potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic
requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my
professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for
some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me
with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101
taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was
required.
In the...show more content...
Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember
having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was
looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading
critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;"
(Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand
what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by
my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to
convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish
writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to
write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one
type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several
other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my
style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

What I Learned In Freshman Composition
In Freshman Composition I learned what metacognition means, and how it applies to academic
writing. Next I learned about textual evidence and backing up your opinions with research. *I expect
this class to help develop my writing skills, as well as find my voice in writing, all together I expect
this class to be challenging but rewarding. Therefore I have set a few goals for myself, my first goal
is to step out of my comfort zone and research topics I have never heard of before. My second goal
is to not second–guess myself on my writing topics and/or choices. Furthermore I expect great things
to come from this

English Composition Course Reflection
During the semester of English Composition, I have grown into a stronger writer. Through
writing different pieces such as descriptive and persuasion topics, the ideas have been created
through words. Due to this class, I have felt to become a more confident writer going into college.
By achieving the curriculum, developing new ideas and describe new topics, I have learned to
achieve in this course. Progressing through the semester, I have developed into a strong writer. By
doing so, I have created new ideas and aspects to my writing in a different way. For example,
discovering new topics through the database and understanding the importance of the audience.
Through this progression, I have developed new research methods such as understanding a database.
Through the database, I was able to understand and describe information and content in...show more

By understanding formatting, sentence structure and style, the course improved my abilities to
succeed in English Composition. Assuming the obvious of writing essays, I concluded that the course
was more than that. By emphasizing on topics and different types of writing, I have understood the
importance of context and information found in my writing. Through my learning outcomes, the time
and effort into every topic was much worth the reward. By understanding new aspects to my
writing, I have achieved the reward of a creative writer. Overall I have achieved immensely
throughout the course. With my new found confidence in my writing, I take these skills into
college and beyond. Through school work and job opportunities I understand how context and
audience are essential to develop a new idea or persuade. From vaguely understanding the
importance of context and the audience, I have developed a clear understanding to focus on these
topics. By organizing ideas found through a reliable source, I have found the confidence to be able
to persuade and describe

My English Composition Analysis
Throughout English composition 1 my grades have fluctuated drastically. Some papers were
surprisingly great and some have been extremely bad. Overall though I have made minor
improvements, maybe not specifically in each paper but overall as a writer I have. Although I have
not and probably will never master the art of writing I know I have made myself better just in these
past few months. This semester I faced the huge inconvenience of procrastination and over time I
learned to change my method of writing; therefore, I could manage my time more wisely and put
more effort into my papers.
In the beginning of the course as each week passed I rushed to turn in my paper before the deadline.
I took a college class last semester, Spanish 1, and like English all assignments are due at 11:59
on Sunday night. Therefore, I told myself that I had plenty of time to work on my paper. Although
I knew English required more work and effort than Spanish I still could not bring myself to work in
class. During the week at school while I was supposed to be working on my paper I found...show

I finally realized I had all week to work on my paper; therefore, I finally took advantage of my
time in class. After receiving my bad grade on my first paper I knew I needed to actually put it in
effort during the week. Throughout the second paper "The Cause and Effect of Volunteering" I
started as soon as I could and by Tuesday I had a solid outline. Then, by Friday I had a nice rough
draft finished before the end of the school day. By Sunday, all I had to do was proof read and
submit which was a major relief. My paper about volunteering taught me that time management is
key in writing efficiently. I received a 90 on the rough draft and a 94 on the final copy of "The
Cause and Effect of Volunteering." My high grade on my volunteering paper gave me hope for my
writing and motivation to work on my paper as much as I could during

Reflection Paper About English Composition
English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and
researching topics to write a piece about a topic. Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing
articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to
use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if
needed. Before taking the English Composition course, I was not one to organize my essays in an
ordeal order to clearly state the point of the work. Now with taking the course, I have learned to
organize my essays, examine research for a topic, and develop an essay with proper mechanics, and
revising skills. In writing my personal, review, analytical, and cultural...show more content...
I then described my life and who I was. After describing this, I explained my experiences in
confronting racism. The point of the essay was to state that racism is still alive and can be present
anywhere. After writing this essay, I learned that my mechanics and style was not where it should
be. Even with the revisions Mr. Heldenfels made in the draft, I still made mistakes with mechanics
and tense shits. I had written comma splice and has several spelling mistakes. I looked to improve
my mechanics after writing this essay.
With writing my review essay of A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's album The Bigger Artist. The essay
took some time to write because of the research I needed to gather. In this essay I used more
citations and quotes. I made mistakes the mechanics in writing the quotes. This was the first essay
in which we used sources, so it was challenging to create my own ideas but I was able to do it.
Writing this essay improved my knowledge of mechanics in citations and quotations.
Through taking the course, I learned to utilizes sources in a more efficient way. In writing my
analytical essay of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly I had to use ten sources. All the sources
I used provided different information, some provided more than others, but all sources were
needed to complete the essay. In collecting all the information for the essay, I had to research who
created the source and decide if it was credible. This essay assignment force me to examine works in

English Composition Reflective Essay
English composition has taught me everything I know now, from how to effectively write a thesis
to grammatically fix my essay. This class fixed my writing skills to speak and write incorrect
terms. English composition gave me the edge I need to take my writing skills to next level. This
class has helped me understand the importance of documentation in a research skill. English
composition showed me that sources either make or break your essay. The true honesty of this
course was that I am glad I took it. At first, I hate this class so much, because this class required so
much extra work to be done, but over time I realized that the extra work really pushes you over the
edge to make your essay great. The extra work justifies your essay and molds

First Year Composition Definition
Going into the real image of writing
College requires us to start with First–Year Composition (FYC), but how do we college students see
that? What is the true meaning behind it and what different compositions are there. First–Year
Composition is defined as an introduction to writing studies. According to a Journal Article Teaching
about Writing, Righting Misconceptions by Douglas D. and Elizabeth W. "This teaching recognizes
the impossibility of teaching a universal academic discourse and rejects that as a goal for First–Year
Composition. It seeks instead to improve college students understanding of writing, rhetoric,
language, and literacy as a scholarly inquiry in which encourages more realistic compositions of
writing"(Douglas1)....show more content...
I don't know how First–Year Composition (FYC) is being taught in other classes. To what I've
heard from other peers, is that all they do is read a book write about it and get tested on it. I
believe this doesn't allow a student to express their capabilities in writing nor in another aspect. I
would highly recommend for teachers/professors to allow students to do projects such as these.
From learning how to do six–word stories, to emoji stories, comic strips, comic scripts, and memes!
Like c'mon memes? Who would've ever thought that could help a freshman student in their first
year of composition class. This helps them better understand themselves as a writer/composer, like
it did to me. I feel like FYC has helped me get out of my comfort zone and try something new and
interesting that can help develop skills I didn't even know I had. Although, I'm still not an expert at
any of this but it has put an impact in my community of

more group based and not individual, so I felt like my first paper was strictly about my opinion.

Personal Experience: English Composition Course
Focusing in self– evaluation to improve the learning process, help me to set goals and be aware of
my own mistakes. When the English Composition course started, I wanted to be able to express
my thoughts and my ideas in an effective way. The continuation of my education was very
difficult, and I began to doubt myself when faced with the first couple of weeks. My first
assignment was my most difficult assignment, and I found myself having trouble sticking to a
thesis, because I had so many ideas that I did not know how to organize, and that was the primary
purpose of taking this course, to learn to make my writings more organized. I choose three
assignments out of the six, which were not only my favorite assignments; they are all written in
classical perspective. I prefer to write in classical perspective so I may get my personal opinion to a
specific audience. As I wrote each assignment I described my past experience as if I was speaking to
a group telling my story. Writing with emotion as I envisioned my past experiences and how I can
get my audience to feel as I felt was my goal. I wrote in classical perspective in the interest of
writing my personality and voice, but it also shows how I perceive my audience. By changing the
structure and organizing my thoughts I was able to shape the overall character of my work. In all
three assignments I wrote in first person point of view. I choose first person view so I can express a

Walking inside the typical composition class, one can expect to see the students crafting the
five–paragraph essay or working on a persuasive piece as they try to argue they side of an in–class
debate. Composition classes do not only work on a studentГs writing, they also get the students to
think through their writing (at least the good ones do). There is a certain well–accepted style to
teaching writing in the traditional composition class, and it works very well for many students and
teachers. However, should the line of comfort be crossed, and if so, how? Should composition
instructors grab a hold of a different writing style, making it the focal point of their pedagogies in
their writing classes? More importantly, if they do, what...show more content...
Of course, they are well–suited to teaching writing of any kind to their students, but could they not
be more effective in doing so if they had the freedom to teach the typical Г¬five–paragraphГ® or
Г¬persuasiveГ® as a piece of creative writing/literature?
While BishopГs work on the topic of using creative writing in the composition classroom is crucial
to any understanding of the argument, Deborah Dean, in Г¬Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres
with Five Paragraphs,Г® also extensively explores the question I just raised, and does so by
bringing in the concept of Г¬genre theory.Г® In an explanation of Г¬genre theory,Г® Dean states
that, Г¬one way to make writing interesting is to create the experiences of the genre in the mind of
the reader and then tweak one or twoГ® (Dean 53). Using the example of a childrenГs fairy tale to
illustrate her point, Dean goes on to say that genre theory is a bit controversial, saying that Г¬if
applied without thought, it could mean a return to a focus on forms and product over processГ®
(Dean 53). Proponents of genre theory, however, feel just the opposite. To them, genre theory is Г¬a
more logical way to empower our students, to give them the ability to write in ways that will help
them be successful in the social situations in which theyГll find themselvesГ® (Dean 53).
Application of genre theory in the classroom Г¬is a process because it asks students to analyze the

Freshman Composition (EN101) is the first college course I have taken, it has certainly been one of
the most challenging courses I have encountered. Initially, I was not going to enroll in EN101,
figuring I did not have the skill set for this course; in fact, I was surprised by my growth and
accomplishments in this course. While this course focuses on the transition from high school level
writing to college level writing, my goal was to enhance the quality of my writing and to prepare
myself for future courses. I can take the knowledge and skills I have obtained and use it for all my
future courses as well. Also, these are life long skills that I will be able to utilize for any occasion in
my future.

Reflective Essay Composition
I thought this was going to was going to be easy. With my past experiences of always succeeding, I
thought I was going to flourish without any struggle––I was wrong. Composition I was a whole new
entity than what I have ever experienced with school. I was so used to always getting the grades
I wanted, with hard work of course, but not here. Even with the hard work I put in, it was very
difficult to keep up with my grade because of the assignments and essays; however, with that
being said, the challenges I found in Composition I have made me realize all I have learned this
semester, which was more than any English class I have taken. They can either make or break
your grade: mechanical errors. Mechanical errors are tricky things. I always question myself and
think, "Is this correct?," and sometimes I take a random guess, hoping it will work in my favor.
The "TCC Guidebook" has stated that "essays with mechanical errors that affect clear
communication will result in a lowered grade," and with having five or more major mechanical
errors within an essay or summary resulting in an F; therefore, I can not afford to take that
random guess. I have learned to go through each sentence in every paragraph, carefully evaluating
and improving any mechanical errors. Critiques on my essays from the discussions have also
helped me understand from other classmates what I may have done wrong and why it needs to be
fixed. Furthermore, what has helped me the most was the grammar exam and its answer key and
the textbook, Everyone's an Author. When I did the grammar exam and graded it, it taught me that
I can not just skim over my essay to find mechanical errors, and that I would have to take my time
with each sentence. If I did not understand why I got something wrong on the exam, links were
given on the answer key that went more in depth about why something was correct or incorrect.
Also, the textbook's chapter "How to Write Good Sentences," gives many examples and explanations
on how to fix mechanical errors when it comes to different types of sentences, punctuation, and parts
of speech. Looking for mechanical errors within my own work was difficult at first, but then I
practiced and spent more time going through each sentence.

This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand

writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about
and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned
while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal,
narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I
encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was
finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything
else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and
myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most
of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was
understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them.
For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms

My Freshman Composition Class
The majority of people in my composition class have jobs––to be exact, seventeen out of
twenty–three. The three students who make up my interview group, Jessica, Michanda, and
Connor, are part of that statistic. Connor is a lifeguard at Kelly Rec Center and states, "I like it
because it's really easy." Jessica also enjoys her job waiting tables at Fish City Grille. When asked
why she likes it, she replied, "I love talking to the old people." Jessica highlighted other reasons
why she "loves" her job, such as getting half off the food, interesting coworkers, and the simplicity
of it. Michanda's job as a customer service representative at Syke's requires her to talk to people
too, except over the phone. Since she speaks English, French, and Creole, Michanda assists a variety
of callers. French–speaking customers are her favorite because "they just want to know their
account balance." Although Connor and Jessica like their jobs, Michanda doesn't care much for
hers. She doesn't like dealing with angry customers who "only call to scream at you."

statement. Jessica said that no matter what life brings her way, she "would like to be happy." On
the contrary, Connor said, "I don't want to say a million bucks, but a million bucks." If this wish
ever came true, he'd drop out of college and live on a private island simply because it's "cool".
Although later in our interview, Connor discarded that statement and instead would like to make a

Composition 1 Reflection
During my first semester here at Stout I learned lot in all my classes but especially in my
Composition 1 class. As I did not have the greatest English teachers in the past this semester was
very helpful to me. Not only was I able to expand my composition skills but also how to think and
develop my writing even further. I could apply these new skills in my speech class as well and it
gave me a better help when preparing and presenting my speeches. This was very helpful for my
speech class when it came time for my final a persuasive speech. Composition 1 helped me in this
way as it helped me be a better persuasive writer. I could accomplish this during several projects I
did in this class. First was my profile proposal where I had to convince...show more content...
One of the ways I could do this by becoming more familiar with the library database. During my
high school projects, we did not need to always use scholarly sources so I usually just did Google
searches for my projects but in this class I had to use scholarly sources for some of my
information which was good as I learned to navigate and sort in the library's extensive database. I
was also able to learn how to look at credibility. During high school I just used the first articles I
could find that would help with my topic. I did not really give the credibility a second thought but
in Composition 1 I learned to take the credibility of an author into account when using that source
for my research. Lastly, I learned about doing academic research by doing pertinent research on
my topic. Once again in high school I looked at research and thought it was good but I didn't read
it thoroughly and found that sometimes I did not get the information I needed for my project. In
Composition 1 I learned this as I struggled to find some relevant items sometimes but overall I
could gather the correct information for my projects. In my journalism project I was also able to
join the academic "conversation" on the

What I Learned In Composition Class
Let's be honest, I'm not the best writer. I have had to write paper after paper for about 12 weeks.
Writing isn't my strong suit and I don't think it will ever be a strong suit of mine. During the 12
weeks of composition class, I have seen improvement in my writing. Many people don't like writing
but writing skills are needed in life. I'm a junior in high school and if I want to get scholarships for
college, I'm going to need to write essays. Whether I become a plumber or a CEO I need writing
skills. I thought that the class was fun because I knew some of my classmates. My teacher was
pretty cool as well. I enjoyed being able to pick my own topics for the papers that I wrote. It was a
lot easier writing about something that I was genuinely was interested in, rather than a topic that
was chosen for me. I enjoyed having a minimal amount of guidelines to follow. It was nice because
I could freely write my paper. I was never worried about the exact structure of the paper. It helped

was also very understanding and kind, I didn't feel uncomfortable asking Mrs. Firzlaff questions. I
find that I don't like asking questions in my other classes because I don't want to "sound dumb", but
I never felt that way in Mrs. Firzlaff's class.

How To Write Composition Essay

  • 1. Reflection On My Composition 1 Course Throughout my Composition 1 course, I participated by composing five writing samples and a writing analysis to go with writing sample. Each writing sample was a different writing style and each writing analysis connects with a practiced skilled used in our writing samples. Also our student learning objective is to communicate effectively. Our instructor assigned a different writing sample each week and we would have about a week to work on it. In class, we were given back round knowledge of each writing sample and information to better each writing sample. After we were given the writing sample and the criteria, I participated by taking what I learned from class to compose the writing sample given and also connecting the student learning objective Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay about Self-Reflection: Writing Composition I have always enjoyed writing, and I believed writing was a subject I was naturally good at. I turned in papers that were still rough drafts, I did not evaluate my sources, nor did I ever take the time to fully understand the prompt. It was not until my first semester of college, in my writing composition course, I realized that I had a lot of work ahead of me to be as good a writer as I thought I was. In the writing course, the students were required to compose several essays using different methods to help progress on the course objectives. The work in this portfolio demonstrates that I have used the methods of synthesis and evaluation of sources to advance my critical thinking skills and develop personal responsibility. Though I have...show more content... I was able to interpret the different type of impact the subjects experienced and then I was able to give a potential reason to why the impact on the subjects was different. In a more recent synthesis essay, called "Ashputtle and the Rough–Faced Girl", I wrote "Ashputtle is given clothes to heal her emotional wounds" (Tharwani 2). In the story, the author does not reveal the symbolic relationship between the clothes and Ashputtle's emotional wounds; I had to critically think and recognize this symbolic relationship. I feel I have significantly improved my critical thinking skills to a point where I can confidently call it one of my b strengths in writing. However, I improved my critical thinking skills by not only writing synthesis essays, but also by evaluating sources to use in those essays. Another method, evaluation of sources, further progress my critical thinking skills and helped me develop personal responsibility. When writing essays, quotes are a great strategy to prove a point. However, finding the right quotes and as well as deciding if the source of the quote is reliable might be a challenge for some people; this was not the case for me. In one of my essays, called "Shocking Results", I wrote "Jerry Burger, a psychologist, points out that 'follow–up questionnaire data [indicated] that the vast majority of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Descriptive Essay On A Trip To The City The feeling of my breakfast trying to see the outside world again, combined with the earthquake like turbulence made me more than ready to hop off the plane. It was ten in the morning and I couldn't wait any longer to begin the start of a new adventure. Seven months had passed since my mother announced that the family was going to take a trip to one of the most iconic cities in America. We had looked up practically every single tourist attraction that New York cityhad to offer. After weeks of arguing we booked a trip with a tour guide who would take us all around the city in a day. The advertisement said we would be taking a trip to Queens, Manhattan, and to the Statue of Liberty. The plane finally landed and it was time to explore and see what the "Big Apple" had to offer. Heading out of our terminal, we were greeted by our tour guide, who had a face whiter than snow and a gigantic smile. I walked into the bus and greeted the strangers that were going to accompany us. As the bus traveled along the road leading to our destination, I noticed how different New York City was from my hometown of Houston, Texas. Everything in the "Big Apple" felt more modern, and there was a much different, possibly busier aura around the people living there. As I contemplated about the differences, our tour guide had stopped at our first destination, the Chinatown of Queens, New York. Walking out of the bus, I immediately felt immersed into the community. It was as if everyone in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn't have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn't understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn't that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester. My first writing weakness was deciding what to write about. I...show more content... I was really happy that I didn't have trouble filling up those pages. This contributed to my essay writing because it showed me that if I don't give and try my best I will be able to do it. It also showed me to always think positive, if I'm always thinking of negative stuff I won't be able to set my mind free and try my best in the stuff I do. Another strength I had was finding the symbols in the short story ВЁThe LotteryВЁ. When I first read it I didn't find any symbols. After Mrs. Philpott gave us the lesson on symbolism in literature I found many symbols. I also saw how those symbols give the readers clues so we could get a clue of how the ending is. I won't forget about this lesson and when I read books I'm going to pay close attention to the words. If I pay attention to that maybe I will get a taste of how the ending is going to be. This was one of the lesson I enjoyed the most. This contributed because this is something I'm going to know for the rest of my life. The third writing strength I had was that I didn't have trouble with the quotes. We had a lesson over how we had to add the quotes on the essay. That lesson helped my mind refresh from what I had learned during high school. I wasn't completely lost on this, but had to pay attention. I was a little scared because it said that if I plagiarized I would get a zero and possibly fail the semester. I personally think that we the writers don't really try to plagiarize. • 5. My experience throughout English 101 Essay My Experience throughout English 101 As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required. In the...show more content... Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. What I Learned In Freshman Composition In Freshman Composition I learned what metacognition means, and how it applies to academic writing. Next I learned about textual evidence and backing up your opinions with research. *I expect this class to help develop my writing skills, as well as find my voice in writing, all together I expect this class to be challenging but rewarding. Therefore I have set a few goals for myself, my first goal is to step out of my comfort zone and research topics I have never heard of before. My second goal is to not second–guess myself on my writing topics and/or choices. Furthermore I expect great things to come from this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. English Composition Course Reflection During the semester of English Composition, I have grown into a stronger writer. Through writing different pieces such as descriptive and persuasion topics, the ideas have been created through words. Due to this class, I have felt to become a more confident writer going into college. By achieving the curriculum, developing new ideas and describe new topics, I have learned to achieve in this course. Progressing through the semester, I have developed into a strong writer. By doing so, I have created new ideas and aspects to my writing in a different way. For example, discovering new topics through the database and understanding the importance of the audience. Through this progression, I have developed new research methods such as understanding a database. Through the database, I was able to understand and describe information and content in...show more content... By understanding formatting, sentence structure and style, the course improved my abilities to succeed in English Composition. Assuming the obvious of writing essays, I concluded that the course was more than that. By emphasizing on topics and different types of writing, I have understood the importance of context and information found in my writing. Through my learning outcomes, the time and effort into every topic was much worth the reward. By understanding new aspects to my writing, I have achieved the reward of a creative writer. Overall I have achieved immensely throughout the course. With my new found confidence in my writing, I take these skills into college and beyond. Through school work and job opportunities I understand how context and audience are essential to develop a new idea or persuade. From vaguely understanding the importance of context and the audience, I have developed a clear understanding to focus on these topics. By organizing ideas found through a reliable source, I have found the confidence to be able to persuade and describe Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. My English Composition Analysis Throughout English composition 1 my grades have fluctuated drastically. Some papers were surprisingly great and some have been extremely bad. Overall though I have made minor improvements, maybe not specifically in each paper but overall as a writer I have. Although I have not and probably will never master the art of writing I know I have made myself better just in these past few months. This semester I faced the huge inconvenience of procrastination and over time I learned to change my method of writing; therefore, I could manage my time more wisely and put more effort into my papers. In the beginning of the course as each week passed I rushed to turn in my paper before the deadline. I took a college class last semester, Spanish 1, and like English all assignments are due at 11:59 on Sunday night. Therefore, I told myself that I had plenty of time to work on my paper. Although I knew English required more work and effort than Spanish I still could not bring myself to work in class. During the week at school while I was supposed to be working on my paper I found...show more content... I finally realized I had all week to work on my paper; therefore, I finally took advantage of my time in class. After receiving my bad grade on my first paper I knew I needed to actually put it in effort during the week. Throughout the second paper "The Cause and Effect of Volunteering" I started as soon as I could and by Tuesday I had a solid outline. Then, by Friday I had a nice rough draft finished before the end of the school day. By Sunday, all I had to do was proof read and submit which was a major relief. My paper about volunteering taught me that time management is key in writing efficiently. I received a 90 on the rough draft and a 94 on the final copy of "The Cause and Effect of Volunteering." My high grade on my volunteering paper gave me hope for my writing and motivation to work on my paper as much as I could during Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Reflection Paper About English Composition English Composition I has developed my style of writing and my skills analyzing and researching topics to write a piece about a topic. Throughout the course, I got better at analyzing articles and pieces to get the meaning of the topic. With that improved skill I was more able to use the information given from the text and install it into my essays, with proper citation if needed. Before taking the English Composition course, I was not one to organize my essays in an ordeal order to clearly state the point of the work. Now with taking the course, I have learned to organize my essays, examine research for a topic, and develop an essay with proper mechanics, and revising skills. In writing my personal, review, analytical, and cultural...show more content... I then described my life and who I was. After describing this, I explained my experiences in confronting racism. The point of the essay was to state that racism is still alive and can be present anywhere. After writing this essay, I learned that my mechanics and style was not where it should be. Even with the revisions Mr. Heldenfels made in the draft, I still made mistakes with mechanics and tense shits. I had written comma splice and has several spelling mistakes. I looked to improve my mechanics after writing this essay. With writing my review essay of A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie's album The Bigger Artist. The essay took some time to write because of the research I needed to gather. In this essay I used more citations and quotes. I made mistakes the mechanics in writing the quotes. This was the first essay in which we used sources, so it was challenging to create my own ideas but I was able to do it. Writing this essay improved my knowledge of mechanics in citations and quotations. Through taking the course, I learned to utilizes sources in a more efficient way. In writing my analytical essay of Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp A Butterfly I had to use ten sources. All the sources I used provided different information, some provided more than others, but all sources were needed to complete the essay. In collecting all the information for the essay, I had to research who created the source and decide if it was credible. • 10. English Composition Reflective Essay English composition has taught me everything I know now, from how to effectively write a thesis to grammatically fix my essay. This class fixed my writing skills to speak and write incorrect terms. English composition gave me the edge I need to take my writing skills to next level. This class has helped me understand the importance of documentation in a research skill. English composition showed me that sources either make or break your essay. The true honesty of this course was that I am glad I took it. At first, I hate this class so much, because this class required so much extra work to be done, but over time I realized that the extra work really pushes you over the edge to make your essay great. The extra work justifies your essay and molds Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. First Year Composition Definition Going into the real image of writing College requires us to start with First–Year Composition (FYC), but how do we college students see that? What is the true meaning behind it and what different compositions are there. First–Year Composition is defined as an introduction to writing studies. According to a Journal Article Teaching about Writing, Righting Misconceptions by Douglas D. and Elizabeth W. "This teaching recognizes the impossibility of teaching a universal academic discourse and rejects that as a goal for First–Year Composition. It seeks instead to improve college students understanding of writing, rhetoric, language, and literacy as a scholarly inquiry in which encourages more realistic compositions of writing"(Douglas1)....show more content... I don't know how First–Year Composition (FYC) is being taught in other classes. To what I've heard from other peers, is that all they do is read a book write about it and get tested on it. I believe this doesn't allow a student to express their capabilities in writing nor in another aspect. I would highly recommend for teachers/professors to allow students to do projects such as these. From learning how to do six–word stories, to emoji stories, comic strips, comic scripts, and memes! Like c'mon memes? Who would've ever thought that could help a freshman student in their first year of composition class. This helps them better understand themselves as a writer/composer, like it did to me. I feel like FYC has helped me get out of my comfort zone and try something new and interesting that can help develop skills I didn't even know I had. My first paper was Social Media's impact on Cyberbullying, this was an interesting topics because it's something I always had in the back of my mind. • 13. Personal Experience: English Composition Course Focusing in self– evaluation to improve the learning process, help me to set goals and be aware of my own mistakes. When the English Composition course started, I wanted to be able to express my thoughts and my ideas in an effective way. The continuation of my education was very difficult, and I began to doubt myself when faced with the first couple of weeks. My first assignment was my most difficult assignment, and I found myself having trouble sticking to a thesis, because I had so many ideas that I did not know how to organize, and that was the primary purpose of taking this course, to learn to make my writings more organized. I choose three assignments out of the six, which were not only my favorite assignments; they are all written in classical perspective. I prefer to write in classical perspective so I may get my personal opinion to a specific audience. As I wrote each assignment I described my past experience as if I was speaking to a group telling my story. Writing with emotion as I envisioned my past experiences and how I can get my audience to feel as I felt was my goal. I wrote in classical perspective in the interest of writing my personality and voice, but it also shows how I perceive my audience. By changing the structure and organizing my thoughts I was able to shape the overall character of my work. In all three assignments I wrote in first person point of view. • 14. Walking inside the typical composition class, one can expect to see the students crafting the five–paragraph essay or working on a persuasive piece as they try to argue they side of an in–class debate. Composition classes do not only work on a studentГs writing, they also get the students to think through their writing (at least the good ones do). There is a certain well–accepted style to teaching writing in the traditional composition class, and it works very well for many students and teachers. However, should the line of comfort be crossed, and if so, how? Should composition instructors grab a hold of a different writing style, making it the focal point of their pedagogies in their writing classes? More importantly, if they do, what...show more content... Of course, they are well–suited to teaching writing of any kind to their students, but could they not be more effective in doing so if they had the freedom to teach the typical Г¬five–paragraphГ® or Г¬persuasiveГ® as a piece of creative writing/literature? While BishopГs work on the topic of using creative writing in the composition classroom is crucial to any understanding of the argument, Deborah Dean, in Г¬Muddying Boundaries: Mixing Genres with Five Paragraphs,Г® also extensively explores the question I just raised, and does so by bringing in the concept of Г¬genre theory.Г® In an explanation of Г¬genre theory,Г® Dean states that, Г¬one way to make writing interesting is to create the experiences of the genre in the mind of the reader and then tweak one or twoГ® (Dean 53). Using the example of a childrenГs fairy tale to illustrate her point, Dean goes on to say that genre theory is a bit controversial, saying that Г¬if applied without thought, it could mean a return to a focus on forms and product over processГ® (Dean 53). Proponents of genre theory, however, feel just the opposite. To them, genre theory is Г¬a more logical way to empower our students, to give them the ability to write in ways that will help them be successful in the social situations in which theyГll find themselvesГ® (Dean 53). Application of genre theory in the classroom Г¬is a process because it asks students to analyze the social context Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Freshman Composition Essay Freshman Composition (EN101) is the first college course I have taken, it has certainly been one of the most challenging courses I have encountered. Initially, I was not going to enroll in EN101, figuring I did not have the skill set for this course; in fact, I was surprised by my growth and accomplishments in this course. While this course focuses on the transition from high school level writing to college level writing, my goal was to enhance the quality of my writing and to prepare myself for future courses. I can take the knowledge and skills I have obtained and use it for all my future courses as well. Also, these are life long skills that I will be able to utilize for any occasion in my future. • 16. Reflective Essay Composition I thought this was going to was going to be easy. With my past experiences of always succeeding, I thought I was going to flourish without any struggle––I was wrong. Composition I was a whole new entity than what I have ever experienced with school. I was so used to always getting the grades I wanted, with hard work of course, but not here. Even with the hard work I put in, it was very difficult to keep up with my grade because of the assignments and essays; however, with that being said, the challenges I found in Composition I have made me realize all I have learned this semester, which was more than any English class I have taken. They can either make or break your grade: mechanical errors. Mechanical errors are tricky things. I always question myself and think, "Is this correct?," and sometimes I take a random guess, hoping it will work in my favor. The "TCC Guidebook" has stated that "essays with mechanical errors that affect clear communication will result in a lowered grade," and with having five or more major mechanical errors within an essay or summary resulting in an F; therefore, I can not afford to take that random guess. I have learned to go through each sentence in every paragraph, carefully evaluating and improving any mechanical errors. Critiques on my essays from the discussions have also helped me understand from other classmates what I may have done wrong and why it needs to be fixed. Furthermore, what has helped me the most was the grammar exam and its answer key and the textbook, Everyone's an Author. When I did the grammar exam and graded it, it taught me that I can not just skim over my essay to find mechanical errors, and that I would have to take my time with each sentence. If I did not understand why I got something wrong on the exam, links were given on the answer key that went more in depth about why something was correct or incorrect. Also, the textbook's chapter "How to Write Good Sentences," gives many examples and explanations on how to fix mechanical errors when it comes to different types of sentences, punctuation, and parts of speech. Looking for mechanical errors within my own work was difficult at first, but then I practiced and spent more time going through each sentence. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past...show more content... This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. My Freshman Composition Analysis My Freshman Composition Class The majority of people in my composition class have jobs––to be exact, seventeen out of twenty–three. The three students who make up my interview group, Jessica, Michanda, and Connor, are part of that statistic. Connor is a lifeguard at Kelly Rec Center and states, "I like it because it's really easy." Jessica also enjoys her job waiting tables at Fish City Grille. When asked why she likes it, she replied, "I love talking to the old people." Jessica highlighted other reasons why she "loves" her job, such as getting half off the food, interesting coworkers, and the simplicity of it. Michanda's job as a customer service representative at Syke's requires her to talk to people too, except over the phone. Since she speaks English, French, and Creole, Michanda assists a variety of callers. French–speaking customers are her favorite because "they just want to know their account balance." Although Connor and Jessica like their jobs, Michanda doesn't care much for hers. She doesn't like dealing with angry customers who "only call to scream at you." The class...show more content... Surprisingly, no one wished for love and only one person wished for fame. Although success ranked highest with fourteen votes, the majority of my interview group wished for happiness. Michanda summed it up by saying, "Happiness is the key of life." Jessica and I agreed with that statement. Jessica said that no matter what life brings her way, she "would like to be happy." On the contrary, Connor said, "I don't want to say a million bucks, but a million bucks." If this wish ever came true, he'd drop out of college and live on a private island simply because it's "cool". Although later in our interview, Connor discarded that statement and instead would like to make a million bucks working a job he's passionate about. This could be categorized under success, but Connor did not vote for Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Composition 1 Reflection During my first semester here at Stout I learned lot in all my classes but especially in my Composition 1 class. As I did not have the greatest English teachers in the past this semester was very helpful to me. Not only was I able to expand my composition skills but also how to think and develop my writing even further. I could apply these new skills in my speech class as well and it gave me a better help when preparing and presenting my speeches. This was very helpful for my speech class when it came time for my final a persuasive speech. Composition 1 helped me in this way as it helped me be a better persuasive writer. I could accomplish this during several projects I did in this class. First was my profile proposal where I had to convince...show more content... One of the ways I could do this by becoming more familiar with the library database. During my high school projects, we did not need to always use scholarly sources so I usually just did Google searches for my projects but in this class I had to use scholarly sources for some of my information which was good as I learned to navigate and sort in the library's extensive database. I was also able to learn how to look at credibility. During high school I just used the first articles I could find that would help with my topic. I did not really give the credibility a second thought but in Composition 1 I learned to take the credibility of an author into account when using that source for my research. Lastly, I learned about doing academic research by doing pertinent research on my topic. Once again in high school I looked at research and thought it was good but I didn't read it thoroughly and found that sometimes I did not get the information I needed for my project. In Composition 1 I learned this as I struggled to find some relevant items sometimes but overall I could gather the correct information for my projects. In my journalism project I was also able to join the academic "conversation" on the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. What I Learned In Composition Class Let's be honest, I'm not the best writer. I have had to write paper after paper for about 12 weeks. Writing isn't my strong suit and I don't think it will ever be a strong suit of mine. During the 12 weeks of composition class, I have seen improvement in my writing. Many people don't like writing but writing skills are needed in life. I'm a junior in high school and if I want to get scholarships for college, I'm going to need to write essays. Whether I become a plumber or a CEO I need writing skills. I thought that the class was fun because I knew some of my classmates. My teacher was pretty cool as well. I enjoyed being able to pick my own topics for the papers that I wrote. It was a lot easier writing about something that I was genuinely was interested in, rather than a topic that was chosen for me. I enjoyed having a minimal amount of guidelines to follow. It was nice because I could freely write my paper. I was never worried about the exact structure of the paper. It helped me broaden my horizon, when it came to writing....show more content... Firzlaff was very helpful in providing real life examples and topics to write about. She provided insight and helpful comments to make my writing better. I could tell that she was interested in helping me become a better writer. She always did her best to help me reach my full potential. She was also very understanding and kind, I didn't feel uncomfortable asking Mrs. Firzlaff questions. I find that I don't like asking questions in my other classes because I don't want to "sound dumb", but I never felt that way in Mrs. Firzlaff's class. In conclusion, I recommend taking a composition class because it gave me confidence in my writing skills. I really dislike writing but this class has helped me improve.
