  1. 1. Producing Hygienic Textile and Commercial Products from Banana/Plantain Waste Materials Dhesinghraja J ,Research Scholar (Full Time , January 2021) Project Assistant ,Textile Intervention DST SEED STI Hub Project KARE Guided by Dr .K . Mayandi Associate Professor Dept of Mechanical Engineering KARE
  2. 2. Abstract & Introduction The use of banana / plantain stems as a source of fibre declined after other convenient Natural fibres such as cotton and silk and synthetic fibres became popular. But in recent years the commercial value of banana fibre has increased and it is used all over the world for multiple purposes from making innerwear, sanitary napkins to Japanese yen notes and car tyres.
  3. 3. Objectives  To study the banana and plantain wastes materials  To classify the disadvantages of synthetic and synthetic blend  To produce the Banana fibers by Extraction Methods (Types)  To process and treated the fibres by alkali /acid ,antimicrobial finish  To produce good hygienic textile and commercial products as per physical, mechanical, chemical and thermal properties after the different treatments
  4. 4. Literature Reviews S. No Articles and Journals Finding / Suggestions 1 Study and properties of banana fiber reinforced composites / Asian Textile Journal Alkali treatment fiber mechanical properties has been increased than treated one 2 Chemical properties of Stem models / natural Fibers Chemical Process in different banana Fibre. Change the Characters 3 Banana reinforced with Polymer composite /Fiber Science and Technology Increased Mechanical Properties 4 Banana cotton blending structures /Fiber science Changed some characters of Thread
  5. 5. Research Methodology  Extraction Methods (Raw fiber)  Fiber treatments (Acid & alkali, antimicrobial finish)  Fiber testing (Tensile , Flexible, young's modules ,Length)  Yarn Testing (Fineness , strength, count and spinnability )  Fabric Testing (Tear, busting ,GSM and Strength)  Product quality (Innerwear, pads, medical ,bathroom and agro textile, composites )  Comparison with other synthetics and advantages
