This document outlines best practices for vocabulary instruction. It recommends explicitly teaching tier 2 words that are high frequency words found across domains. The process involves selecting 15 versatile words per week and presenting them along with student-friendly definitions. The instructional sequence involves pronouncing the word, having students repeat it, clarifying part of speech, providing a synonym and examples, and having students use the word in a sentence. Throughout the week, teachers should provide opportunities for interactive practice and assessment to help students develop an understanding and ownership of new vocabulary. The goal is not just to define words but to explain their meanings in an accessible way so students can incorporate them into their speaking and writing.
